The next time you're sitting in Cades Cove traffic at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, consider this. 🤔 In the 1920s and 1930s, there was a plan to dam up Abrams Creek and make a lake 50 feet deep, spanning two miles long and three miles wide. Yesterday, I shared one of my preferred locations in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Today, I will share another. I have spent time on many dirt roads, but Hyatt Lane in Cades Cove is one of my favorites. Every visit here stirs my imagination. Life behind a camera forces every photographer to think. Choosing a destination requires thought and planning as does packing a camera bag. Once on location, more thought and planning go into pursuing subjects, determining settings based on light and subject, and creating meaningful compositions. In general, photographers are busy thinking and planning, but we should not limit our thoughts to where to go, what to pack, and when to press the shutter. This morning's photo of Hyatt Lane is rendered in black and white for two reasons. The first is that monochrome works well here given the range of tones, but the second and more personal reason is I imagine walking this dirt road 150 years ago. My imagination takes me down the lane to greet farmers at work or families headed to church. My imagination carries me past grazing livestock and the smell of freshly cut hay. My imagination takes me to a scene beyond the tonal range. We see and feel with our eyes and hearts, but our imaginations can take us even further. It's been a whirlwind, but I wasn't arrested for being inside Neyland Stadium last Wednesday evening. After I sort through all of my photos, I will share one or two of my favorites from my on campus adventure with my niece. In early 2010, I made a series of five drawings based on photos I'd taken from moving cars while traveling somewhere in the US. This one was from a trip in December 2005 to the South; it was my first & only time to most of the states between Louisiana and North Carolina. I was amazed at the difference in the forests there from the ones I'm used to in the West. The inspiration for this image, taken near Great Smoky Mountains National Park, gave me a peaceful feeling. This drawing reminds me of the cozy days around the winter holidays, when you just wanna curl up in a blanket & dream about the forest.
