Yesterday, we joined a peaceful protest in London supporting Spanish dogs and saying no to how they are treated in their country. These poor dogs are used to hunt, chained up outside and then abandoned or killed at the end of the hunting season when they are no longer needed. We were introduced to our gorgeous rescue, Atticus, two years ago and we're so lucky he came into our lives. He was found with a rope around his neck, skin and bone and with a nasty bite to his leg. Today, he is a healthy, funny, loving boy sleeping peacefully next to me after yesterdays busy day. We walked with other cities and countries for him and all of the other mistreated dogs. It was an early start at 4:45am and a long day with 21,000 steps walked, getting home at 10pm, but worth it for these angels. We also got to say a quick hello to @princessbeatriceroyal who was walking past with her family 👋 It's hard to think how people can treat defenceless animals this way. There is a lot of cruelty happening in the world right now, and we need to be the voice for those who can't fight - animals and people. Hundreds of people from across the UK and their Spanish rescue dogs took part in a march from the Spanish Embassy to Trafalgar Square in London, demanding an end to hunting with dogs in Spain, where up to a massive 100,000 hunting dogs are cruelly killed or abandoned at the end of the season every year. The podenco and galgo breeds of Spain are not recognised as pets by the country’s animal welfare laws as they are merely regarded as ‘hunting tools’, which has earned these dogs the moniker of ‘the invisible dogs of Spain’. During the annual hunting season that runs from October to January, many live in cramped dark sheds when they are not coursing, spending their days confined and neglected. Training techniques are barbaric and include towing Galgos from cars, trucks and motorcycles at high speeds. Known as Galgueros, hunters dispose of Galgos at the end of hunting season in the most horrific ways imaginable... hung from trees, thrown into wells, starved, beaten to death or abandoned. It is estimated that thousands of Galgos are killed every year. A favorite among hunters to dispose of unwanted Galgos is called "piano playing". The galgo is tied around the neck and hung in a tree so that the poor dog barely reaches the ground with its hind paws, trying to balance and "dancing" back and forth with the back legs and paws, barely on the ground, to avoid strangulation. Being killed in this way is a slow death and that the dog experiences panic, anxiety, despair and unimaginable pain. The suffocation can take hours and sometimes even days. In the end, when the Galgo can no longer manage to stand on its hind legs, exhausted in the snare, the dog finally suffocates to death. Today, thousands of Galgos and Podencos will be suffering a cruel fate - once the hunting season closes, they're no longer of any use, and the Spanish government refuses to protect these beautiful dogs under welfare laws, so the abuse they suffer is unprecedented. Our two beautiful boys were both rescued by @hopeforpodencos and are now thankfully living the life every dog deserves, but there are thousands every year who aren't so lucky. On Saturday (3rd Feb) a peaceful protest will be taking place in London to help raise awareness of the plight of the Spanish hunting dogs. When Elaine and her husband first saw Myra, she was cowering in a corner of a kennel. @greyhoundsinneed.uk who brought her to the UK, were not sure that she was ready for adoption. She was very thin and showed visible signed of abuse but mainly, she was too nervous. That did not deter Elaine and her husband. Both have been involved with Greyhounds rescue for many years. However, even experienced owners like them could not have foreseen the enormity of the challenge ahead. ‘Myra was so terrified that she would throw herself at our windows almost non-stop until she was totally exhausted and collapsed. We couldn’t get anywhere near her and for a long time we were unable to touch her at all. Although she was terrified of us, she was also really scared of being left alone so we took turns to sleep in an armchair downstairs with her. ‘ The couple soon realised that Myra would benefit from the company of another dog and they adopted Tabby, a calm, confident greyhound. ‘After about a year, Myra came to me voluntarily for the first time - an incredible moment and I still feel emotional about it now.’ ‘Myra eventually became a loving, affectionate pet (with us at least, still no-one else can touch her).’ She is now 12 and although she is still very nervous around dogs, people and unfamiliar place, she copes as long as Elaine and her husband are with her. Next up we have the story of amazing Maz ❤ "Mazinger (Maz) @mazinger_the_podenco was found abandoned in the mountains near Malaga in 2020, Helpers of the Pods and Dogs @helpersofthepodsanddogs began the process of rehoming him in the UK. Maz received interest regarding adoption but, the enquiries did not go any further. I saw him on one of @podencopair stories and made contact. Maz came to live on the south coast, near Brighton in April 2021. He is a 4 year old Podenco Ibicenco and is his family’s gentle giant. A big, gentle soul who loves everyone, people, dogs and cats. He is a jolly boy and very, very funny! A true clown! He is a busy Pod so has been introduced to the game of Flyball and is a registered member of Rapid Rascals Flyball Team @rapidrascals ." "We met our Podenco, Atticus, nearly two years ago when he was rescued by family after being found walking a mountain area in Spain at the end of hunting season. He was skinny and had a rope tied round his neck. Our family took him in and fostered him until they could find a place in a shelter, but he didn't settle there and they worried he wouldn't be rescued. When visiting we learned about Atticus (then called Rojo) and visiting him. We decided we would rescue him that day and eventually we were able to get him over to the UK where he now lives peacefully with us in Birmingham, with his older sisters, Gigi (our other dog) and Beau (our cat). ❤ARWEN & GRYPHON ❤ "We adopted Gryphon in October 2020 from Greyhounds in Need. They found him on the streets in Spain and he was in a pretty bad state, extremely nervous and frightened. At some point in the past we think he had been hit on the head and his fur is missing around the area of the injury. As it hasn’t yet grown back I don’t think it ever will. He had trust issues and he would lie in the corner of the sofa and only move to eat and go for walks. It took him three months to finally come and lie on the bed in the kitchen/diner with us. He had an odd way of walking and running and an x-ray showed that his spine is fused at the lumbosacral level possible due to an injury in the past. Over the last two years Gryphon has had 24 sessions of hydrotherapy and is still having physiotherapy which is improving his walking and running. It is now just his dislike of rain that keeps him indoors! Our Arwen arrived in January 22 as a companion to Gryphon. She has helped to give him more confidence. She also came from Greyhounds in Need and she and Gryphon now live in Surrey." "Betsy was found in a park in Motril in September 2020. She was rescued by Refugio de Julia. @refugiodejulia We understand a neighbour saw her being beaten, starved and thrown over a wall before she ran away. "Pablo is from Brighter Days Rescue in Staffordshire (placed in foster there by Puppy Rescue Spain). He was found living in a bin, covered in ticks and fleas, on his own at just a few weeks old.” Pablo now lives in Northamptonshire, where he is loved and pampered. Lovely Arwen was handed in by a hunter when she was no longer wanted. A happy girl she was adopted from @greyhoundsinneed.uk and joined Gryphon in Surrey. Gryphon was rescued off the streets. He was in a bad state, very nervous and frightened and showed signs of old injuries. He too was adopted from Greyhounds in Need. His owner said : ‘He had trust issues and he would lie in the corner of the sofa and only move to eat and go for walks. It took him three months to finally come and lie on the bed in the kitchen/diner with us’ In the last 2 years Gryphon has had hydrotherapy sessions and is still having physiotherapy which improved his walking and running. ’It is now just his dislike of rain that keeps him indoors!’ Join us on Saturday 3rd February and show your support for @plataformanac and the hunting dogs of Spain! Button was rescued off the streets by @galgosdelsol and adopted from @greyhoundsinneed.uk in January 2022. At the end of that year we adopted Blanca who was handed in by her Galguero to a perrera. She was rescued by @galgosenfamilia and was treated for Leishmaniasis. We adopted her from @projectgalgo . In the summer of 2023 we fostered Mimi, who was rescued, along with 6 other Galgos, from appalling conditions by Associación Galgos del Sur. Mimi became one of Project Galgo’s failed fosters 😉 All three Galgos now live happily in Staffordshire.
