#FeelGoodFriday Larry and Melissa's marriage experienced rollercoaster seasons of highs and lows. With 5 children, the entire family unit was threatened with the verge of divorce when Larry and Melissa decided to fully commit to The Marriage School, the programs and the work that accompanied it. Larry recalls, "We did the homework and reconciled all the hate and disdain that we had felt for each other. We found ourselves in love again, true love, mature love. A love that was so strong that we knew we could weather any storm that life would throw at us." Kate says, "We both love 'The Bill of Rights'....You give all those things to everybody else- respect, honesty, etc. but you forget with your spouse and they get the last of it. It's a good reminder." Pete adds, "It's really easy to take for granted 'The Bill of Rights'... especially with your spouse because she's around you all the time, she should just know things automatically." She encouraged me to celebrate similarities in personalities and relationships, focusing on those rather than the points of diversity. I love that! Some personalities can be incredibly opposing, threatening confusion or miscommunication. I left the conversation committed to changing narratives surrounding these relationships to one of celebration over the areas where we do overlap. . The next day, I drove by a horrendous car accident. The gentleman did not make it, evidently so. I left the scene feeling shaken and physically ill, grieving for his family. I looked in my rearview mirror as I drove away, humbled by the strength and grit of the police officers and medical professionals who encounter scenes just like this daily. . Then I called my sister. (I am a high empath, and she is not - a point of difference. But thank God for that difference. She serves as a nurse in the Navy and has cared for countless COVID-19 patients and men and women dying slowly and alone. But not entirely alone because she is with them until their last breath. I cannot do what she does every day.) I called her and celebrated the very difference in our personalities, which can threaten to cause conflict yet is part of what makes her so brave and so beautiful. . Let us not only celebrate similarities in personalities but the differences, too. Because it is in those differences where strengths of character and profession and purpose lie.
