✨Me and my dino hat getting some ice cream✨ I grew up with three siblings, so there was naturally a lot of comparison between us from ourselves, family, and those outside our family. We each had our roles in our family system. I was very much the peacekeeper and caretaker. Some of my siblings were so talented, and their praises were lauded. 2 of my siblings and I did musical theater together, and I saw them get bigger roles while I was relegated to the chorus (although I did get more decent parts in non-musical theater). As we grew older, our appearances were compared. One of the most hurtful things that was said to be as a teenager was one of my siblings (who was struggling with their own ED) telling me they developed an ED so they wouldn’t have to look like me. I recognize I hold a lot of privilege. This isn’t a lament of “omg I’m not pretty,” but, instead, a reflection on the intertwining of family relationships and comparisons that come from within the family. I’m not sure that I ever stopped comparing myself to my siblings. After being in the caretaker role, I entered a caretaker profession. The roots go deep. 💜 Happy Mother's Day to all the mamas! Kid mom, pet mom, plant mom, whatever kind of mom you are… if you’re momming yourself and keeping yourself alive, give yourself a high five today, too.�Adulting is hard AF and we don’t give ourselves enough credit for that. And if you have a lot of feelings around this day, that's ok. Make space for those feels and do something nice for yourself, even if that's just curling up with a blanket and taking some rest to sort it out. Yesterday I had lunch with my family matriarchs--my mom and my grandmother, and I’m glad to celebrate every day that I can with them. 💪🏼 My mom is one of the strongest women I know. She's lived with back pain most of her life and had multiple surgeries because of it. She soldiered on through and still she persists. My grandmother is 88 and still living independently. I get to see her at least once a week which is a joy, even when things in my world feel busy AF. I'm filled with joy that I got to celebrate with them both. The release of endorphins during exercise varies greatly among individuals due to factors such as genetics, fitness levels, workout intensity, and individual physiology. While some may feel the ‘endorphin high,’ others may not feel it as strongly. This is pretty obvious when you think about it - you’ll get some people that LOVE the gym and fitness and some that do not. (And there are a multitude of reasons for this) It’s crucial to recognise that preferences for movement are personal and multifaceted. It’s common for fitness professionals to struggle to understand those who aren’t as passionate and may even label them as lazy, perpetuating harmful stereotypes. This is yet another BS fitness industry toxic trait and it’s essential to remember that there’s no moral superiority tied to movement. You have 3 options as a citizen in our body image obsessed, thin-ideal society. 1) Restrict and control your food intake. This will greatly affect your physical and mental health, leading to problems such as anxiety, depression, ocd, eating disorders, insomnia, osteoporosis, brain fog, extreme fatigue, etc. Your brain will be operating at about 25% of its capacity, and it will take YEARS to get back to health, even if you start eating right away. 2) try to sometimes honor hunger, and sometimes control intake. You will have probably 66% of your brain capacity. You may have anxiety, and other negative effects of too little, and you probably won’t be as thin as you’d like, but if you’re afraid to commit to going all in, this is a good place to start. However, you will be running off stress and probably won’t be able to truly relax and feel content if you don’t eat what your body needs. 2) live free of diet mentality. Allow your brain to be fully fueled. Operate on 100% brain power with a spark of creativity and zest for life. Be energized, and be able to laugh, cry, and dream. Feed your body what it asks for. You can still make healthy food decisions, but always eat enough calories. You might weigh more than you want, but at this level of health, it won’t matter so much. Even if your natural set point weight is in the “obese” bmi, it will be a better life than starvation. Ultimately, if you want to fully live life, you need to fuel yourself, even if it means weight gain. This post is dedicated to anyone who might have a complicated relationship with their mom❤️‍🩹 While I am all about celebrating the many amazing moms out there💁‍♀️, I also know from my experience that many people who struggle with food might have had parental figures encourage disordered eating habits. Moms are especially expected to diet, and this pressure can oftentimes be felt placed upon the whole household. If you grew up in this dynamic (or a different but still damaging one) with your mom, remember that you are valid in however you feel on mother’s day, even if the emotion is negative. Why set this imaginary bar for yourself? On which grounds? 😶 I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a weight goal. I just want to avoid you trying to reach a goal which takes a toll on your emotional wellbeing. It is about where the goal is coming from. Instead of fixing a number on the scale which you think will make you happy. Let’s look at other ways you could measure your happiness, in relation to your body. A happy weight is a weight at which 🤩 you FEEL light 🤩 you want to move your body 🤩 you FEEL you could go anywhere 🤩 you can be around food without having to worry about whether you’ll be able to restrict yourself or not 🤩 you can eat any food, and stop whenever you’re not hungry anymore 💛 you feel spontaneous and free 💛 you are ok with feeling emotions because you know how to deal with them 💛 you’re busy thinking about other things. One thing is sure: food and your weight aren’t on your mind. Thats your ideal weight. It may be the same number on the scale, but you would know, because you’ve ditched the scale. I vividly remember a day ~15 years ago when I was sitting outside with a friend at In-n-Out burger. A car drove by and a person yelled out the window, “go to subway, fat a$$” To this day, I still have shame and anxiety about eating in public all because of that moment. The most ironic part is that I was eating a LETTUCE WRAP because I was vegan at the time. But also, it doesn’t matter if I was eating a mf-ing 100x100 gigantic cheeseburger. People in fat bodies should not have to justify their existence. What did I miss on this bingo card!? Vent to me in the comments, babes.
