We’ve been exploring the photographic collection made by Axel Poignant and these images of a young boy called Pippo, with what is probably his family’s donkey, caught our attention. Not only do they seem to convey an affection for the donkey, but they also emphasise the strength and endurance for which the animals are famous. From carrying bags of coal or Pippo and his father to navigating difficult terrain including steep slopes and a field of volcanic rock, their donkey was an essential part of day-to-day life. #Museums #Archaeology #Anthropology #Cambridge #PhotoFriday #Photography #PhotographicCollections #PoignantCollection #HistoricPhotography #HistoricPhotographs #DonkeyWeek #Donkey 📸N.164917.RPT Pippo and a donkey, Fornazzo, Sicily. This series of lantern-slides show just a few of the stages involved in handcrafting textiles. From removing cotton fibres from the seed and then spinning them to create thread, to weaving on a loom. The woman who appears in the images is one of the Iban people of northwest Borneo and in one lantern-slide she is shown working with a back-strap loom. This loom, with a strap worn around the waist, could be set up nearly anywhere and allowed the weaver to control the tension on the warp (the vertical threads) by learning backwards or forwards. #Museums #Archaeology #Anthropology #Cambridge #NationalTextilesDay #PhotoFriday #PhotographicCollections #Photography #HistoricPhotography #HistoricPhotographs #Digitalisation #Malaysia #MalaysiaTextile 📸LS.124358.TC1 Brushing Cotton Seed [cropped], Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia. During the 1920s and 30s archaeologist Leslie Armstrong excavated Bambata Cave, @creswellcrags and Grimes Graves. Over 630 lantern-slides relating to these sites have now been catalogued by the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and are now available to explore on our online collections database. The excavations of some of the caves at Creswell Crags (as seen in the second image) were a defining moment of Armstrong’s career. They brought him to public attention through the press interest in his discoveries. It also made his name in the academic community, although his lack of formal training meant he still faced criticism for some of his interpretations of finds. During his interwar excavations at Grimes Graves, excavating some of the Prehistoric flint mine shafts, Armstrong discovered a figure known as the ‘Grimes Graves Goddess’ or the ‘Venus of Grimes Graves’, a carved chalk sculpture of a female form. Less that 12cm in height the ‘goddess’, which can be seen in our third image, is carved from a single chalk cobble. Soon after its discovery rumours started that the figurine was a fake, and the general consensus appears to be that Armstrong was the victim of a hoax. The Grimes Goddess is now in the care of the British Museum where it is described as a possible modern forgery. The lovely painted images in this photograph decorate one of the ceilings in the tomb of Seti I, which is considered one of the most beautifully decorated tombs in the Valley of the Kings. The photo shows a section of a celestial scene which focuses on a group of constellations, which include the falcon-headed god Horus and Ursa Major (which takes the form of a bull). The protective hippopotamus goddess Taweret (with a crocodile on her back), whose appearance was intended to frighten away danger, is also depicted. #Museums #Archaeology #Anthropology #Cambridge #PhotoFriday #PhotographicCollections #Photography #HistoricPhotography #HistoricPhotographs #Digitalisation #Egypt #AncientEgypt #Taweret #SetiI #ValleyOfTheKings 📸P.52898.RDG Relief in the Tomb of Seti l, Valley of the Kings, Egypt. Sometimes images within the Photographic Collection can show us how objects we care for were displayed in their collector’s homes. This photograph of the British Residency in Gangtok in one such example, as the mantlepiece and dresser in the room display an incense burner on an elephant head stand and a copper ཇམ་སྦྱིས (jam ji). The jam ji, or teapot, was a gift to the Williamsons, who lived at the Residency during the mid 1930s, from the Druk Gyalpo of Bhutan. We love the sense of joy and community which radiates from this image. It also highlights the vital importance of water, not just as a source of hydration (as shown through the vessels waiting to be filled), but also hygiene (at least one of the women pictured is washing clothes), industry (another is making a clay pot) and for the natural world (as emphasised by the lush foliage in the background of this photograph). #Museums #Archaeology #Anthropology #Cambridge #PhotoFriday #PhotographicCollections #Photography #HistoricPhotography #HistoricPhotographs #Digitalisation #WorldWaterDay #WaterPump #CollectingWater #Polynesia #Samoa #Tonga #CookIslands 📸T.111069.GTN Around the water pump [cropped], Polynesia. In 1999, photographers Trent Parke and Narelle Autio (@chillioctopus) decided to capture Australian beach life during the country’s worst summers for drownings. The project, titled The Seventh Wave, expanded across two years and sent the pair from Bondi, Freshwater, and Manly beaches to Newcastle’s Bogey Hole, Port Macquarie, and Byron bay, among other places. Encapsulating a kind of national identity, Parke and Autio also captured humankind’s connection to wild nature and what draws us in. “The ocean is a symbol for the ultimate universal energy — something which both gives and takes away life,” said Narelle Autio. “It can be tranquil and calm or violent and unpredictable. Despite the dangers and inevitable loss of life the sea continues to be an irresistible attraction to millions of people. We wanted to show this symbiosis between mankind and the ocean and our apparent ongoing need to return to water.” © Trent Parke / Magnum Photos #magnumphotos #storytelling #trentparke #narelleautio #australiansummer #photographiccollections #photojournalism #imagelicensing #photoagency #exhibitionspotlight #artconsulting #snapperimages #photography #advertisingphotography #streetphotography #reportage #artconsulting #gallery #australianexhibitions #exhibition #curator #licensing

Thanks to the relationships anthropologist Roslyn Poignant and her husband (photographer Axel Poignant) developed with communities in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti, Raiatea, Papua New Guinea, and Sicily, they were able to make the over 17,500 photographs collectively known as the Poignant Collection. These images have a particular emphasis on people and relationships with a focus on the lives of families and it allowed them to create a series of children’s books, which were written by Roslyn and illustrated with Axel’s photographs. Two of these books, ‘Kaleku’ and ‘Children of Oropiro’, were created as the result of collaboration with communities in Papua New Guinea and Tahiti. The exhibition “Gathered Leaves” surveys a decade of works by acclaimed photographer, Alec Soth @littlebrownmushroom It brings together five of his major works - “Sleeping by the Mississippi” (2004), “Niagara” (2006), “Broken Manual” (2010), “Songbook” (2012-2014) and the most recent, “A Pound of Pictures” (2019). The subjects of Alec Soth’s works are the American ideals of independence, freedom, spirituality, and individuality, which the photographer expresses in scenes of daily life. The human essence always remains the central aspect of his intimate portraits; his trained eye is directed at the story behind the visual narrative—human emotions, personal destinies and longings. Photographer Axel Poignant was concerned about ensuring the people he photographed were portrayed was not merely ‘bodies’. He wanted to convey their personalities through his images. With over 17,500 photographs in the Poignant collection, depicting people and places from the Pacific and Malaysia to Sicily and Mexico City, different images will resonate with different people. In our latest #DigitalLab blog post @leahmclaine, who is in her final year at @trincollcam, explores the seven images to which she felt the strongest draw, including these stunning portraits of siblings Erita and Kaleku. The exhibition "PARRATHON" traces the trajectory of the singular photographer @martinparrstudio through some of his iconic series, between 1975 and 2019. From his beginnings in black and white, at a time when photography was dominated by journalistic drama and formal beauty, Martin Parr came to develop his own style saturated with colour. With humour, Parr accumulates images with which he shows us the fragmented vision of a reality dominated by consumerism, mass tourism, junk food, superficiality, classism or the hyper-representation of “ I ”, as signs of an era that continues to this day. His images are usually amusing, but also uncomfortable, because what they show is our reflection. © Martin Parr / @magnumphotos

Photographs from our collection can be an invaluable historic record of buildings and memory aids which can prompt the recollection of forgotten stories. When we share these images with members of the communities in which they were made we are also able to improve our understanding of the photographs. When Rui En Pok, a second-year undergraduate at @homertoncollege, visited Kusu Island with the 1950s photographs of Alan Elliott she was able to add important context to many of the images. One such example showed rocks tied to the branches of a tree. After speaking with the caretaker of the keramat (shrine/s) she was able to discover that devotees had tied them there in the hope their wishes to Datok Kong would come true - the higher they were tied, the more likely it was that they would be granted. This practice was eventually discouraged on health and safety grounds and today yellow ribbons are tied onto the branches instead. To find out more about what Rui En Pok discovered during her visits to Kusu Island check out our latest #DigitalLab blog post, #LinkInBio. #Museums #Archaeology #Anthropology #Cambridge #Photography #PhotographicCollections #KusuIsland #Singapore #Research #ResearchBlog #BlogPost #MAADigitalLab 📸Laminated copies of Alan Elliott’s photographs. We facilitate licensing and access to Magnum Photos’ large collection of photography exhibitions for display in galleries, museums and institutions across Australia and New Zealand. Delve into this Sergio Larraín retrospective 📷 This amazing exhibition of the Chilean photographer Sergio Larraín (1931 – 2012) traces the essential of his singular career. Rare images, a poetic approach, a brilliant photographer who inspired a whole generation of photographers. A penchant for the vagabond’s life, a profound desire to be in the world and in the purity of the act led him to become a photographer, but Sergio Larraín nonetheless spent the greatest part of his existence in seclusion, practicing meditation, yoga, writing and drawing. This captivating image of an Aivilingmiut woman with facial tattoos, a skin parka and a Christian cross was made in 1947 at Naujat in Canada. Sharing photographs from our collections can sometimes reveal new information and enrich our understanding of an image. Such was the case with this photo of a jeep driving over a gorge which was shared on a Facebook group for historical photographs of Papua New Guinea. For some people the jeep simulated reminisce, whilst others had suggestions for the location of the gorge. The photograph was digitalised as part of two Photographic Collections projects, which involved the Roslyn and Axel Poignant collection (over 17,500 photos from the Pacific, Malaysia, and Sicily) and the Alan Elliott collection (1,800 photos of Singapore).
