#memademay2024 Day 19 I missed a day yesterday. It was a busy day at the allotment and I forgot to take any pictures. Today was another busy day but I managed a picture. Anyone who has an allotment will know that it’s hard work and really not glamorous. I made three pairs of undies using scraps of time here and there this weekend. It’s a mixture of patterns and my own modifications. I prefer the waistband made of just bamboo and no elastic. I’ve a 10 inch difference between my waist and hips and they don’t slip down. I cut the bamboo 10 inches shorter than my waist and this is really comfortable. Bamboo is really stretchy. I did the legs on my binder. I wore the first pair yesterday and did find the legs rode up a little. So on these while sewing on the binding I also sewed in some lingerie elastic (see pic), I’ll be interested to see how they feel! I do an enclosed gusset. I now sew these on the sewing machine so I can grade the seam allowances. I used to serge them, but the binder has trouble going over the layers at the joins. In my experience binding with jersey only works with a continuous strip. If there are any joins they cause trouble. Whereas when binding with woven fabric, I cut the join seam allowance down to one or two eighths of an inch and it works fine. 🇬🇧🇪🇦⤵️I really wanted to sew this fabric, the print has an oriental vibe that I think suits this design from #burdastyle magazine. I haven't sewn a zip and I've slightly modified the neckline to make it more fitted. A gray skirt for a gray day. This is one of my favorite casual skirts, made in linen so the rumpling is just inherent. This is the Style Arc Richmond Utility Skirt. Make it with or without the hemline drawstring. Easy to make, easy to wear. My outfit today, and I thought I would share it as part of #memademay2024 hosted by @sozoblog but I haven't pledged, I'm just wearing and mixing it up as usual. The outfit is a mix of old and new. My new top is made from a vintage curtain remnant discovered recently in a family house clearing session. It's very silky and was not a large piece so my trusty vintage Simplicity 8879 pattern came to the rescue for the bodice and I adapted the sleeves from modern Simplicity 2448. The linen culottes are from a few years ago made using Butterick 6178 which are so useful and very comfortable to wear. I think this works really well with my William Morris fabric sandals which I love but don't wear as much as I thought I would. Note to self.. wear them!! This is one of my favourite combinations. I made the pink #MarloSweater from @TrueBias in brushed cotton sweat shirting; and the cotton seersucker shirt some years ago. The top is based on the Wiksten Shift (no longer available) with shirttails added. The jeans are the #MillerTrousers from @Paper_Theory in denim with a little stretch. I’ve made this pattern about 5 times and I really love it. It passes the still-comfortable-when-sitting-down test. There is a neat cut-out type of dart on the back, and the pockets are constructed in a way that minimises bulk. And I love the shape of the legs. When making the Millers as jeans, I do a good bit of topstitching and add back pockets. Such a quick-to-make pair of jeans and so comfortable. On the seams where I am going to do two rows of topstitching, I first serge the seams together without joining them on the sewing machine. And then topstitch the seam allowances to one side. Kind of faux flat felled seams. This was yesterday's outfit #larktee in a wonderful cotton bought a few years ago in Lisbon from #retrosariarosapomar. While I love this shirt I am not quite happy with it... I am thinking of adding some dark blue ribbing/jersey to the wrist to make it look more finished. I am wearing it with a well-worn pair of rtw jeans, mended with fun embroidery. This is a really comfortable outfit and was very quick and easy to make. The top is a version of the #WikstenShift (company now closed) in linen made from leftover fabric. I had limited fabric so made this instead of my usual LB Pullover as the sleeves use a lot less fabric. I used the binder attachment on my coverstitch machine to bind the neck, main hem and sleeve hems. This is so fast but there is a bit of a steep learning curve to this process. I cut out and made the top (including making the binding) in just under two hours – and I’m not a particularly fast sewist. You can’t do this binding in the round so I needed to alter the constructions steps a little. • sew one shoulder, bind the neck; • sew the other shoulder; • bind the sleeves before attaching; • sew down one sleeve and side seam, bind the main hem; • sew the other sleeve and side seam. It takes practice to get the edges to line up nicely at the beginning and the end. I stitch the seam allowances near the edge down by hand. If these don’t line up perfectly you can manipulate them a little when doing the handstitching. I had a greenish thread already in the coverlock, so just used this for the binding although it’s not an exact match. I kind of like that it can be seen. The skirt is simple and has just enough gathering to make it comfortable to wear. Underneath, I’m wearing a pure silk-satin half slip. It’s just two rectangles French-seamed together. The waist is lingerie elastic; and the hem is a rolled hem done on my serger/overlocker. I’ve made several of these in different silks. I got the fabric as bargains a few years ago and they sat there for a good while and I thought I may as well use it up. The Marvellous Merlin Muslin! I’ve been wanting to make this #merlinbodysuit (@hariitolingerie )for months, as I need a good bodysuit block for an upcoming project, and this did not disappoint! This is out of some ponte scraps, I foresee it getting lots of wear. After sewing the body and one sleeve with some water-soluble thread, the adjustments needed were pretty simple and standard for me: shortened the body by about 1 1/2”, adjusted the leg line a bit, narrowed the gusset. I also lowered the armhole a teensy bit (and added to the sleeve armscye to match). I was able to wash out the thread and re-use the the body pieces to make this version. I took 1/2” off the neckline all the way around and cut the armholes in to be higher on the shoulder (but I can still wear a regular bra strap with it). I used stretch mesh for the bands and to finish the leg openings and I think it bumps it up a notch. I LOVE the snap opening for the back! I put two small ones for insurance 😏, but could probably have gotten away with one. And before anyone asks: no, I do not feel them at all. I did my usual tests of wearing this for a few hours, walking to store, cleaning up around the house, etc. Totally comfortable! Did I mention it has cup sizes? 👏👏👏 They go up to an H/I cup; I can’t remember if I used the D/E or the F/G, as I had cut out the pattern long ago, but whatever it was, it fits great — didn’t even have to lower the darts. Enjoying everyone’s #memademay posts, even though I’m not really participating this year. #memademay2024 Day 3 Today is wet and miserable so it’s a jeans and long sleeved top kind of a day. These are rtw jeans which are loose fitting and so comfortable that they are another staple in my wardrobe. I’ve have made jeans previously but they are not my favourite and I have denim sitting in my stash but haven’t got round to using it yet. My long sleeved top is made in a fine stretch rib and goes perfectly with jeans. It’s loose fitting and can be layered underneath for extra warmth. I’ve used this pattern several times and it’s always been a winner and remains so in my wardrobe. Day 2 in #MeMadeMay2024. It’s almost summer here in Oslo, and it’s so nice after a long, cold winter with lots of snow, to enjoy the sun ☀️ Here in Norway it’s spring and summer when we can eat and make our dinner outside. Can you see the lovely fabrics? The sewing space at the loft is warm during part of the day. And I will use our dining area as an extra sewing space. I have used the dining table to fold the colourful fabrics. I wear a #MelilotNoobi top with white rtw short pants. This is my absolute most worn summerpants with large pockets. Perhaps I will make a pattern and sew them in different colours. I testsewed the #noobi during my summer holiday in 2022, it’s a perfect pattern to make tops, tunics, dresses, shorts and pants. With the #MelilotNoobi pattern and hacks it’s possible to sew almost a summer wardrobe. This one is good - mods include lengthening sleeves and body - but still not the tee shirt of my dreams... This is my third version of the Coppelia Cardigan by @papercutpatterns and I’m really happy with it. I used a viscose blend sweater knit in purple melange from my stash, which was originally purchased from @lamazifabrics last year. It is a gorgeous shade of vibrant lilac, which I love. It is also super soft and warm, so feels like being wrapped in a lilac hug! 🫂💜 I wanted a slightly longer version than my last two, which I’d lengthened by 1.5 inches - #sewingtall – so I lengthened by a further 1.5 inches (making 3 inches added in total). I also lengthened the sleeves a few inches. The Coppelia is a straightforward make that goes together pretty quickly, leaving you with a lovely wrap cardigan that you can dress up or down! Yay, I made something for myself in under a day—just a bit of an afternoon for pattern tracing and hacking, followed by sewing through the evening 🥰 I feel pretty good about this considering a few years ago, getting something done this quickly would have been inconceivable. While I remind myself it is NOT about speed, it nonetheless shows me I’ve acquired enough knowledge and skills to (sometimes!) make a garment I absolutely LOVE in a fluid, effortless way. While I do also enjoy my more detailed, slower projects, I can also say, “Wheee!” when I can take a quick gratifying spin down the making slide! 🛝 I’m submitting this for #magamaroundapril hosted by @suestoney, @sewing_in_spain, and @_tallerdelili_ because I really wanted a new spring top in my wardrobe that felt both fresh and me-like. I’ve wanted to try out the Olya Shirt pattern from @paper_theory for some time, as I’m a big fan of Tara’s patterns and style generally – and finally, I got ‘around’ to it, meaning for once I can participate in the #magamsewalong with #magamaroundapril ! I bought this cotton shirting fabric 4 years ago from @myfabricscouk and it is a lovely bright pink (although it was described as coral). I thought it would be a good starting point to try out the pattern before making it in a much bolder stripe, as it has a really subtle, fine stripe which makes pattern matching much easier!  Unfortunately, I was making this during a couple of very challenging weeks life-wise, so it wasn’t the ideal time and there were times where it did not go well!  I unpicked where the back yoke and arm hole meet several times and there were many swears too!  This was no fault of the pattern, which is well drafted and has great instructions, it's just that my brain struggled to focus! 🙄 However, overall, I really like the finished shirt and have already worn it several times.  I will definitely make another Olya Shirt at some point as I like the quirky detail of the sleeve/yoke combination and the contrasting stripe directions.  I didn’t add the pockets to this version and I lengthened the sleeves by 2 inches and the length by 1.5 inches.  Next time I will make the cuffs a little deeper too, as I like a deep cuff! Earlier this year, I saw a couple of Apollo Jumpers pop up in my feed, from a new to me pattern company @bellalovespatterns, and purchased the pattern pretty much straight away.  I’d also just purchased some super thick sweatshirt fleece in this delicious pink from @fabricgodmother, so when it arrived, I wasted little time in getting started on my own Apollo! Blouse made with #burdavintage pattern, this is the second time I sew this pattern, I found it ideal for this #fiberstofabric fabric. I bought it with a voucher from a challenge some time ago and I wanted to use it. The strips can be knotted or as I wear it, with a brooch. I fasten them at the front and at the back they are loose. I have added cuffs as it is a midi sleeve and although it looks very cool, I think I will wear it much longer. The 50's designs are very glamorous and full of beautiful details although I wouldn't wear a #totallook. I'm a fan of the fashion of that era and I think they go well with current garments. An added bonus from the large piece of remnant fabric. I used the bodice part of pattern Simplicity 2377 and lengthened it by adding a a pleated frill. I have to admit that after sewing the gathered tiered dresses, I couldn’t face any more gathers 😐 luckily the pleats look good. SEWN: a #TessutiPatterns #GabbyTop! As I mentioned in my last post, the (OOP) #GabbyDress used to be one of my "go to" patterns - but not just as a dress! As you can see, it makes for a lovely flared top that's quite fitted across the shoulders and bust... and I love the neckline bias binding finish that's so typical of Tessuti Patterns. For this version I only had 1.1 metres of (directional) fabric to play with, and rather than my usual upper back piecing I've added a band across the back waist to be able to fit the pattern pieces in my yardage. Please do not ask me why I bought so little fabric... I think I must have been delusional! The fabric is a Nerida Hansen print on cotton linen bought in her September sales last year - the artist is Tara Reed, and the design is called "Fresh Flowers Blue". I'm not normally very keen on floral fabrics BUT I do love bright blues and oranges, so I'm hoping to get lots of wear from this! I guess that depends on the weather though... we seem to have finally hit autumn! The NOVA TWIST TOP was love at first sight ♥️ since asymetrical garments and twists is something I just can’t resist. This time, the fabric choice wasn’t difficult as I had this white rib knit brought recently in a Barcelona flea Market and I knew it was perfect for this project. I have been wearing (and enjoying) it non-stop and people adore it and they just can’t believe it’s handmade!!. I usually style it with pants, jeans and of course with my LONDON PANTS. As I love it so much I made a second NOVA TWIST TOP, this time, short sleeve and no turtle neck in a silver rib fabric from my stash. I made it to match my second LONDON PANTS and I found the set is wonderful🤩 The knit rib was really easy to handle, to sew with the overlocker and the result is fantastic, the pattern made me doubt at the beginig so my advise is to trust and follow the instrucctions. As a knit garment, the fit is usually good, but this exclusive design with back and front darts result in an Amazing fit😍, don’t you agree? My tips and recomendations: 🧵 TIP for making the squares perfects, I added some washaway doble-faced tape to press corners in place before sewing. 🧵 DON’T use overlocker (or at least DON’T set the blade on) when sewing next to the knot. 🧵 CHECK the % of elasticity of your fabric in both ways 🧵 DON’T BE AFRAID of sewing knits as they can become your best friend. I love this refashion! I bought this tiered skirt from the thrift store years ago. I thought it had possibilities due to the amount of fabric and I also liked the feel of the fabric. It's 100% rayon, but feels like a twill and not like a challis. I wanted a top like Imby's Flowy Top with a front tie and full sleeves. I cut a basic front and back from the center of the skirt, and rectangles for the sleeves from the sides. I like the fit. I couldn't have a voluminous body because I needed a lot of fabric for the sleeves. I sewed the sleeves in flat, and then sewed the side seams. I used bias tape for the neckline, and the original ties which have beads on the end. I'm so happy with how the top turned out! Autumn has well and truly made itself at home early this year and it seems I have gone from sundresses to long pants overnight making knowing what to wear challenging to say the least. Tops and jeans work well at this time of year so a top is what I have made. This top is #newlook6871 but altered to have a much higher neckline which I have added a small frill to and a straightened yoke which I have inserted lace into. I also split the front in two places and inserted lace as well. The fabric is left over from a dress I made before Christmas in rayon challis sourced from Minerva.com. My inspiration for the changes was inspired by an equally busy top by Trelise Cooper but mine was paired back slightly (if you can believe it). 🇬🇧🇪🇦⤵️In February I transformed my old uniform suit.  Now it's the shirt's turn. When I saw this model from Dior, it was clear to me. The first thing I did was to decide where to cut, for that I used red mannequin tape, then I adjusted the cut part, in the armhole and in dart that I extended till the neckline. I made strips of bias binding with the cut sleeve, joined them together, and then I interfaced and finished the neckline. I changed the buttons for other golden ones I had in my stash. If you have any unused shirts, I encourage you to try this #refashioning, as you can see it's quite easy. Con la manga cortada hice tiras de bies, las uní y entretelé y pulí el escote. Por último he cambiado los botones por otros dorados que tenía en mi alijo. The inspiration for this hack was given to me by @mimma.handmade as her #colomatshirt was too baggy and she added a hip cuff. Well, I've done the same but at the waist. As you can see, I've used again this ribbon with mini golden studs that I kept in my stash, and I've sewn it around the neckline and as a strap over the shoulder. The first blooms of spring make my heart sing! Proud Posy, one of Minerva's brand new exclusive viscose challis is the most glorious floral I have seen and it has arrived right on cue to banish the winter blues! I couldn't resist the bold colours, red, blue and orange on a deep midnight purple background to give me a bit of spring fever. To allow this fabric to glow i chose to keep it simple. Luckily I have been eyeing up sewing a bias skirt, they are so cool and versatile, and I finally made a top that's been on my sew list for ages. These two separates work equally well on their own. I'm keeping my hopes up for a bit more sunshine to banish the never ending rain for a while, is anyone else fed up of wearing wellies? First spring sewing ✅ I had this green crepe remnant that was just under one meter, so my options were limited. This top with neckline pleats worked, but only just! The crepe was rather spongy so I used a clapper to press the pleats into submission and stitched all hems by hand. I made this outfit for my big brother’s surprise 60th birthday party last month and I’m so happy with how it turned out (the outfit, not the party!).🤣 The trousers are the Protea Pants from @paradisepatterns. Previously, I’ve made the pleated front version and ended up stitching down the pleats as I didn’t like them, so this time I went straight for the flat-fronted version, and I love them so much more! The style and fit on me is much better with the flat-front version. Other mods include cutting the inside leg seam slightly narrower than the pattern and raising the centre back a smidge. The fabric was from deep within my stash, a navy bi-stretch suiting bought several years ago and it works well with this style. For the mesh top I used the @grainlinestudio Lark, boat neck version (although I lowered the front neck slightly). It’s a quick and easy make, even using a 4-way stretch net, which I purchased from @funkifabrics. I wasn’t brave enough to just wear a bra underneath, so I opted for a navy camisole, which felt a little more appropriate for the occasion! As it turned out, it was so cold in the party venue, that I didn’t actually remove my jacket anyway! I really like the overall style of this outfit – the wide-legged trousers work well balanced with the close-fitting top – and I adore my gold boots too! Whilst I probably won’t wear the top unless going ‘out-out’, these new Protea Pants are set to become a real workhorse with the rest of my wardrobe, as they will work for so many occasions. I recently did an intense review of my wardrobe, removing items that I don’t wear or that don’t feel like ‘me’ anymore. I am definitely being more mindful with my makes, ensuring that they truly work for my personal style and can be mixed with multiple other items to make different outfits. 🇬🇧And here is the latest round of testers of the #colomatshirt digital pattern. @angiesewfancy and @Sewing_cinderella sewed a dress. @Mjgc_gesusa adapted the pattern to her measurements, following the instructions, and made it with a turn-down collar, also indicated in the instructions. My pink dress combines both hacks, turtleneck and dress, and I made it in sweatshirt fabric, that is not the most suitable to make the turtleneck, because it requires a fabric with at least 50% elasticity, so I added about 5 centimetres more to the neckband. @necami10 has added cuffs to her t-shirt, since she hadn't fabric enough. Mi vestido rosa auna ambos hacks, cuello vuelto y vestido y lo he realizado en tela de sudadera comprada en #encantsbarcelona, el tejido no es el mas idóneo para hacer el cuello alto, pues requiere un tejido con al menos un 50% de elasticidad, pero le he añadido unos 5 centímetros más al contorno de la pieza del cuello. @necami10 le ha puesto puños a su #colomatshirt pues no le llegaba la tela y me ha sorprendido lo bien que queda, le dá un toque más elegante en mi opinión. I made this fabulous wool top out of one metre from @newcrafthouse by clever cutting and using an interfaced hem, so a win-win. I used 3 pieces of fabric for the sleeves, which creates an interesting finish too. I recently made the #riseandfallturtleneck by @papercutpatterns I’m in need of some basics. While this was supposed to just be a #muslin it is totally wearable. I made a straight size 5.
