🖤🖤 Adam Pendleton is a New-York based conceptual artist, known for a multi-disciplinary practice and his predominantly black-and-white palette. Often described as the embodiment of a new era, his work captures concepts from Dada, Conceptualism, Minimalism and the Black Arts Movement through a graphical lense. Across painting, collage, appropriation, film, text, printmaking and installations, Adam Pendleton attempts to recontextualize narratives about the past, breaking down rigid historical categories in order to "imagine alternate presents". Never at a loss for words, the iconic conceptual artist #MelBochner returns with a new show of both older and recent works at @davidtotah on the Lower East Side. “Across the works included, the presence of the artist’s hand and the enormity of the brushstrokes he deals out say less about his own subjectivity, and more about the way language, construed as a gloss of graduated meanings, muddles the world around us while concealing its own history. Works from a series executed between 2012 and 2014 use acrylics as well as enamel, a material which is generally reserved for signage. These paintings tacitly point out how even in something as common as signage, language is rarely transparent. Bochner’s recent work, more hybrid pieces composed of cut out foam letters mounted onto canvas, are both sculptural and painterly, humorous and serious. Elementary phrases of an almost apologetic nature take on a highly particularized nuance of meaning through his treatment of color—sometimes dripping, sometimes painting over a word—which is no less ambiguous for all these techniques. In I Forget What I Forgot, for instance, the word “what” is all but whited-out, a kind of aphasia shading into unconsciousness. Day 28 of 30works30days. Today’s prompt is ‘invent your own measurement of time’. My old boss Dick Negus used to say ‘every project expands to fill the vacuum of time available’ and I’ve found that to be an immutable truth. The reality is we never really know exactly how much time there is for a project because there are always so many other things on at the same time. It’s a constant balancing act between all things vying for attention with their own requirements and time frames/deadlines (from cleaning my teeth to writing these comments, moving my studio to hanging out with my kids). I suspect more by luck than skill, I’ve just about managed (though I hope it comes across more convincingly) to respond to the various ‘pulls’ on my time. I think of, and manage my time in terms of ‘priorities of doing’, a 1 Pull has a rather elastic timescale (eg. going for a run) whereas a 10 Pull is an emergency (eg. shoring up the ceiling when a joist suddenly gives way and the contents of the loft is about to drop into the room below).
