Ten years ago today in a beautiful & solemn ceremony at the Vatican, our Holy Father @franciscus canonized two of his predecessors as Saints of the Catholic Church. It was an historic moment for the entire church! Both Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII led the Catholic Church during historic times inside and outside of the church. Pope John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council in 1962 and Pope John Paul II was instrumental in the fall of Communism throughout Eastern Europe, especially in his homeland of Poland. These two men were indeed among great leaders of the 20th century! This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of the start of my pilgrimage to visit and photograph all 192 Catholic cathedrals and 93 basilicas here in the United States. What an amazing milestone! I can't believe that a whole decade has passed since this incredible journey began. I never anticipated that by attending mass on that unforgettable Easter Sunday in April 2014 I would undertaking this spiritual mission across our beautiful nation to see these sacred houses of worship. The whole experience has been life changing and rewarding! It shows that God had a different plan for me in life. He has been truly good to me! Now after ten years of being on the road seeing and taking pictures of these holy sites, my pilgrimage stands at 102 cathedrals and 59 basilicas visited. What a true blessing! Today was a very somber day at my parish. Our beloved pastor Fr. Peter Cipriani celebrated his last Sunday with us before beginning his new assignment as pastor of @stroseoflimact later this week. For nearly 10 years as our pastor, Fr. Peter was an incredible priest to all of us. His ministry among us was a blessing! His impact on the parish will be felt for many years to come. Please pray for the soul of a good priest, a holy bishop and a dear friend. Bishop Kevin Birmingham, an auxiliary bishop of the @archdioceseofchicago, passed away unexpectedly last night. He was only 51 years old. His death comes as a great shock! He was ordained a priest in 1997 by then-Archbishop Francis George and ordained a bishop in 2020 by Cardinal Blase Cupich. I have gotten to know Bishop Birmingham from his days as priest-secretary to the Cardinal. He was always so kind, holy and very down to Earth. He loved the Lord and serving the church especially in Chicago. May the Lord grant this faithful servant eternal peace in the Kingdom of Heaven and reward him for the good work that he did on this Earth. May the angels lead him into paradise. Rain couldn't have not put a damper on the beautiful celebration of the @dioceseofbridgeport's annual Blue Mass earlier today at the Cathedral of St. Augustine. The Blue Mass is held every year to give thanks to our brave men and women who are serving our communities as police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel. Every single day they are out there risking their lives to help others in need. They need our prayers and support! At this Mass, we also commemorated the 22nd anniversary of September 11th, 2001 and we prayerfully remembered those who lost their lives on that unforgettable day.
