Yay auditions are rolling in! At the last workshop I took at @actorvanstudios with Casting Director Candice Elzinga, she mentioned the changes with the actor’s union here in BC that requires casting to prioritize union actors for union productions, which is most large tv and film projects. I took her notes to heart and joined the union and then promptly received an audition for a new tv show! And btw my network tv debut is coming up mid-March…. I’ll keep y’all posted. As actors of colour we seldom get opportunities to play ‘real people’. Under The Bridge was one such where I got to be one of many threads that weave the tapestry to tell the true story of a heinous crime that was a real eye opener, rocked our community and laid down the foundations of anti bullying awareness in our schools provincially and federally. I had just recently emigrated to Canada 26 years ago when Reena Virk barely in her teens was savagely robbed of her life. The thought of the grief the family has had to endure sends a shiver through my spine even today. So when I was asked to join the family to play Reena’s Nanaji (maternal grandfather) Mukand , I saw it as a ‘calling’ a ‘gift’ to be able to honour this family and tragedy. The story focuses on ‘the hidden world of the 7 teenage girls -and a boy- who were responsible for the crime’, I would be misleading you if I said Mukand is at the centre of the story but I made it my mission to soak up as much as I could find through community and the infinite source called Google. I unearthed much including his tireless work in resettling new migrants from India, that his first job at the age of 17 as a sawmill worker on the island was a union job at .87 cents /hour in 1947 and eventually $20 by the time he retired, and how perhaps in an effort to ‘assimilate’ they chose to be baptized as Jehovah’s Witness. I also started to experiment with a look and search for that inner strength of this stoic figure seen by his daughter Suman’s side in countless photos online through the grieving /trial process. These are some of the early photos of preparation.
