7 years ago, I moved to Florida and I didn’t know a single soul. I had training, and a reel, and a hardworking ethic - but there was no one to usher me into my new found creative home. I didn’t know what facebook groups to join, or which agencies to submit to. And I just had no sense of when the local theatre companies were holding auditions. I had no one to guide on how best to break into the acting industry here. So I created my own. I set to work- on my little word document, and made a list. One by one, I googled local theaters, I joined literally dozens of groups, I started following Casting Directors on social media. And I did everything within my power to quietly observe the goings on in my local Florida region. And as I watched and commented I slowly started submitting and landing my first agent here and booking my first play, my first film, my first commercial in town- my little document grew. And so I decided- let’s make it pretty. Several months of Canva beautifying later- I have something I’m truly proud of- and I wanted to share it for FREE. . . . I want actors to have access to as many tools as they can to build their professional acting careers. #flashbackfriday My first reach out was this jumbo sized postcard back in 2017/2018? Some people say “Postcards don’t work” but this one got me in the door to audition for an episode on Season 3 of Superstore. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But I printed out about 100 and only sent out about 50 😬 So what’s a poor actor to do? I turned mine into a mini resume! I went into Canva, designed a smaller and shorter version of my resume, then nicely pasted it to the back of the card. Then I would drop these off at various casting offices that were local to me in LA and the Bay Area. And I did get a few calls for theatre auditions 😃 Now I mostly stick to sending digital postcards which are no cost to me and I have a better response. 😉 The lesson I learned: always try something new and don’t be afraid to pivot.
