Last week, Aspengrove's Grade 7 students wrapped up their Ancient Civilizations Unit with a celebration of learning. 🤩 The project-based unit involved an in-depth inquiry into an ancient civilization of the student's choosing. This included Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Mayan, Incan, and Aztec civilizations. The students explored these ancient societies, created a timeline, a map, and investigated the diverse roles of their citizens. Join us Wednesday, April 24th, from 6:30-8:00pm in Aspengrove School’s Ravens Nest for a session with Hannah Beach on understanding adolescents from the inside-out! Although every adolescent is an individual, some common dynamics affect all adolescents. Understanding what these dynamics are can provide the keys to knowing how to deal with the problems that may arise. Hannah Beach will be examining the construct of counterwill, exploring the topic of teen resistance - where it comes from, what its purpose is and how one can recognize when rebellion is healthy or a result of adults being replaced by peers. During this session, participants will look for ways that they can come alongside their teens to make more room for their thoughts, ideas, values and preferences as they more fully come to discover themselves. In addition, participants will learn strategies for building relationships with teens as well as how they can protect and maintain those relationships during challenging times. Attendees will also look at how they can use the extraordinary power of relationships to help them build a 'village' of support for the adolescents in their lives so that they may come together to support them on their journey. Over the past few weeks, Ms. Mortimer's Grade 2 class has been hosting a new and growing family in their classroom... a chicken and her baby chicks! 🐣🐣 As part of their unit on How the World Works, the students have been studying how living things change according to their life cycle. The class received the eggs at about 14 days of incubation from Mrs. Parsons, a Middle Years Teacher at Aspengrove. Flossie, the Silkie Hen raising the eggs and baby chicks, has so far hatched four chicks! Last month, students in Grade 10-12 (alongside Mrs. Ohly, Mr. Kaethler, and Mr. Riendl!) packed their bags and hopped on a flight to Costa Rica! ✈️ During their trip, the students visited various locations such as Tortuguero, Sarapiqui, Arenal, Monteverde, and Guanacaste! The students partook in a number of activities throughout their stay, such as a visit to the Caribbean Conservation Corporation Museum where they learned about the museum's sea turtle conservation program, a river kayaking tour in Sarapiqui to observe and study Costa Rica's wildlife, a visit to the Malekus Indigenous community to learn about local history, a dip in some hot springs near the Arenal Volcano, a canopy zipline tour, snorkelling along the coastline, and much, much more! 🔎🐢🛶🌋🤿 🏖️ "Costa Rica was unlike any previous trip I had been on. I learned so much about the local environment, culture, wildlife, food, and more! My favorite part was hands down the sunset swims on the beaches in Guanacaste. Our tour guide and bus driver were both incredibly knowledgeable and the whole group had a great time! Costa Rica is easily one of the highlights of my time in high school and I made many memories that I will carry forever!" Nicole, Grade 12 student. The term Renaissance Man, which began in the Renaissance period, defines an individual with well-rounded skills in cognitive, physical and social pursuits who were typically excellent philosophers. 🏛 As part of their history inquiry into the Renaissance, Mrs. Parsons's Grade 8 Social Studies class was tasked with investigating someone who they thought embodied the ideal Renaissance Man and presented their research using a method that represented their chosen man. 🌎🔭📚📜 The Grade 8s created presentations that included a telescope which you could look through to learn facts about Galileo Galilei, a heliocentric sphere depicting Nicolaus Copernicus's achievements, and many more fun and creative projects. In Grade 10, Aspengrove School students are required to complete a journey of learning that both stretches, inspires, and empowers their minds through hours of dedicated work to create one, all-encompassing project in which the individual has completely poured themselves into. This journey is the Grade 10 Personal Project! ✨ This month, the Grade 10 students hosted an exhibition night to showcase their final products which they have spent most of their Grade 10 year working on. Mr. Riendl and some of Aspengrove's Grade 12 students recently visited the University of British Columbia (UBC) to compete in the annual UBC Physics Olympics! 🧠 The Physics Olympics is a competition featuring nearly 1000 students from across British Columbia! Students compete in a variety of physics and engineering-related challenges such as solving high school-level physics problems and completing university laboratories. 🧐 While there, the students received a tour of the campus particle accelerator (TRIUMF)! During Mr. Vincent's Grade 11 History class, students put aside 5 straight hours to engage in an epic World War II simulation in side-by-side games of Axis and Allies! 🎲 Set in the Spring of 1942, Axis and Allies is a strategy-based game where players compete to win the war by capturing enough critical territories to gain the advantage over the enemy. Each student was assigned a country from the Second World War and hunkered down with snacks and drinks to battle for the fate of the world. What happens to your library book after you return it? Our preschool students rode the school bus to the North Nanaimo Regional Library (@vilibrary) to find out! 📙 Students watched as their returned books traveled along a conveyor belt and were sorted by a machine that read each book’s code and directed the books back to the right location. They then met librarian Julie and received their first library card! Grade 12 students Julia, Cosette, Nathan, and Oscar recently exhibited their final cumulative artworks in celebration of the time and dedication of their past 2 years of learning! The students displayed both personal and conceptual artworks in a variety of media and multimedia. 🖼️ 🧵 In Grades 11 and 12, students have the option to participate in a Visual Arts Diploma Programme, which allows students to combine rigorous research exploring the functions of art, along with cultural and historical contexts with technical skills and personal expression. In their second year of the course, students focus on their own independent study, while they are supported in the studio by their teacher, peers, and other professionals in the visual arts field. 🧶 🎨 🪡 This year, the exhibits featured beautiful works of photography, intricate multimedia artwork, a magical garden scene featuring watercoloured paintings, and even a robot's apartment based on life in the future! 📸🖼️🤖 The students hosted an opening night to the show, inviting their friends, family, and the school community onto campus to view their pieces of work. This school year saw the start of a new athletics program, the Aspengrove Climbing Team! 🧗 The group included students from Grades 7-10 who attended two ISABC climbing competitions over the month of February. Their first competition was a top rope scramble event hosted by Brentwood College. The second was a bouldering competition that took place at the Richmond Olympic Oval. 🏔️ Throughout these two events, all athletes grew in both skill and as teammates. It was amazing to watch our athletes cheer each other on, offer support when needed, and willingly share their perspectives on how to perform a hard move. 👏 Our students are already excited for next season's competitions. Last month, Aspengrove's Junior School hosted a very exciting assembly! 🤩 During their assembly, students showed off their new dance moves with Rose from @dancepl3y, whom they had been training with during the week leading up to their assembly. The students put on a very energetic and exciting show! 💃 Next up, Aspengrove's Musical Theatre Club, which features students in Grades 3-5, performed 'It's a Hard Knock Life' from Annie and 'I Won't Grow Up' from Peter Pan. To review their World War II Unit, Mr. Vincent and his Grade 11 students hosted a thrilling game of Jeopardy! Last Friday, Aspengrove School hosted the annual Intercultural Day! 🌍🌎🌏 Acting as a wonderful opportunity for the Junior School's community to both acknowledge and celebrate our diversity, Intercultural Day also plays an important role in the International Baccalaureate's International Mindedness. 🤔 During Intercultural Day, students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 dressed in clothing representing their heritage or a culture with which they feel a special connection. Students then spent the day participating in various cultural activities planned by our staff, such as games and activities from countries around the world, a global drumming experience with local drummer and musician Jordan Hanson, Hul’q’umi’num’ Language Lessons with local Hul’q’umi’num’ language teacher Sharon Seymour, and much more! As sharing food is a custom across cultures and a wonderful way to spend time learning about each other, students also partook in an intercultural potluck in their classroom! 🥐🍔🌮🫔🧆🍱🍙 Thank you to all who contributed to this year's Intercultural Day! Last month, Aspengrove's Grade 10 students attended the Climate Action in Motion: ISABC Youth Sustainability Conference at the University of British Columbia! 🌱 The event, which saw over 300 students from neighbouring @ISABC1 schools, provided a venue for students to come together to collaborate, discuss, and learn more about biodiversity, climate change, how to be more sustainable, and how to take action against climate change! 🌍🌎🌏 After having a brief opening session, students participated in three workshops throughout the day. These workshops covered a variety of themes including using local plants for medicine and food, how to save your community from alien plant species, caring for the ocean, how to create change in the school community, the impact of our food choices on our planet, and much, much more! A closing session gave students the chance to win a variety of sustainability-focused prizes, with Matthijs winning an eco-friendly cutlery set!
