I’ve been in a meeting with a very exciting company that is developing treatments and mordants that enhance the natural dying of cellulose fibres and increase their light fastness significantly to a level you previously only achieved for synthetic dyes. Yes, exciting and I’m really hoping to be working soon on these products and showing you the results The company is working with large companies and smaller natural dye users like myself .. if all the paperwork is done soon .. hopefully I will have the solutions to work with in the near future , I will also be taking these new mordants to the Mexico workshop for my participants to try as well. Oops I had to repost as the photo was better in natural daylight Trialling some approaches to botanical printing of osteospermum flowers on Silk Noil. Silk Noil is a rather rough slubby textile but gives good colour . The texture gives you a less refined print than a satin but I like the rough effect. The osteospermum itself doesn’t print with a lot of colour but you can see that the logwood dye on the print far right is only partially resisted by the petals, giving a pleasing contrast to the white centre. Also the centre of the flower prints some detail onto the white background. Making home made extracts from prunings from my apple tree , you need to shred the wood finely. to allow the most efficient extract of the dyes and tannins . An over night soak and a slow simmer. The extracted dyes and tannins were used to soak a carrier blanket which was bundled with leaves and this mordanted silk twill . Botanical printing experiments working with linen and red pine bark, printed with .. you guessed it .. Buddleja. See my previous post to see my Buddleja moments on silk and cotton. Those little blue beauties are very young leaves from smokebush, the leaves are red but the magic of mordants converts the red anthrocyannin to a blue colour. So what were the experiments? This shrub is mainly deciduous but usually there are leaves that remain over the winter, providing some leaves for botanical printing in the depths of winter. Now that we are enjoying the warm of spring at last. The buddleja are growing vigorously. Buddleja have a vibrant yellow flavanoid dye that gives a vivid yellow on textiles when using aluminium mordants and green when used in combination with textiles treated with aluminium mordant and iron salts. The texture and colours of the leaves vary a lot with the individual shrub and I have found a favourite plant that gives me vivid greens and lovely texture and dynamic shapes. These leaves produce beautiful prints on cotton linen, silk or wool. All the works flow details of the prints shown here are shared on my Facebook group. I have made a montage of some botanical printing 🍁🍁🍁🍁(ecoprinting) experiments with aluminium salt mordants, iron salts and red pine bark tannin. This is just a teaser. I love the colour palette of the printed leaves and flowers that is transformed by the use of iron salts in the textiles. The colours are more brooding, and cooler greens and blues. When you learn about which leaves🍁🍁 and flowers 🌼🥀to print with, you have to consider how their dyes and tannins react with the mordanted textile. The colour palette can change so much depending on the metal salt you decide to use. A silk twill wrap of many colours. They seem almost unreal😳, bright and colourful, but this is the real deal. It’s not photographic manipulation. Natural dyes can be vivid colours. The vivid yellow💛💛 is from buddleja leaves , I also soaked some old autumn leaves in the red natural dye called madder which comes from the roots of a plant whose Latin name is Rubia tinctorum. The other commonly used species is rubia cordifolia. The use of Latin🔤 names here is important as there are 2 species of madder that we use as a source of natural dye, and the way we extract the colour is different. So be sure you are buying the appropriate plant roots, or powder. Botanical🍁🍁🍁 printing (Ecoprinting ) cotton. I’m starting to use a greater range of leaves and flowers as spring advances into summer. Here the cotton is shown after I used a red pine bark tannin blanket in the bundle. The wonderful thing about the Birch is the delicate leaves but also the beautiful little catkins, 👀👀which this cotton print picks up really well. There is also Sambucus red cherry and Barronwort leaves. COMPARE LEFT AND RIGHT on this sample of silk twill ! It’s an exciting time for using smokebush and red acers 🍁, they have just emerged and they are loaded with anthrocyanninns. These dyes have a tendency to to be transient and wash sensitive from many plant sources . I’m demonstrating a way to fix the blue dye from acers consistently on silk by modifying your bundling approach. Compare left and right there is a different treatment on each half! Smokebush has more resilient anthrocyannin in addition to its bright yellow flavonoid dye and prints equally well left and right but you can see there is a difference in colour. People always ask me how long I’ve been an artist… Can I answer….for forever?! I have dyslexia, so school was always a little anxiety inducing… I lived for creative projects and art class! At home I would always tinker and have little projects going on which I’m sure my older siblings rolled their eyes at. When I went to college, I knew I wanted to be a fine arts major but I had no portfolio to speak of and only had one high school art class under my belt (sports took up all my elective hours). However, Mary Visser and her cohorts took a chance on me and I left university knowing how to sculpt, throw, oil paint, figure draw and so on and so on. Life is funny though and although I’ve been making art and in creative fields or teaching art ever since, it was really about four years ago I took the leap to make this “what I do for a living”. I look back at all that wasted time and get frustrated sometimes… Because I knew, I’ve always known this is what I bring to the table in this life… But I guess I had to walk that path to get to where I am now! I find so much joy in creating art… Taking something I can only see in my head and then actually creating it with my hands is my own form of magic… my own alchemy! I just finished trimming these 28 small 'raindrop' vases. Each one is made from under a half pound of clay. I love making small pieces because they are the perfect size to test glaze color combinations. I used to throw these all on the 'hump' but my clay body is too tight and no matter what, most of the pieces will develop an S crack once dried or bisque fired. So, I switched to just weighing each ball of clay and making them individually. I'm often asked what I do for a living and I answer that I'm a photographic artist. Thing is many people don't know what that means - so here are a few examples. (Blue is one of my favourite colours hence the blue theme but photographic art doesn't have to be blue). Essentially it's any artist who creates their art using photography as the medium. This can include chemicals from the 19th century right the way through to the modern digital pixels in the 21st century.
