The Thief of Bagdad marked Douglas Fairbanks's transformation to "swashbuckling" roles, where he was able to bring his skilful acrobatics to the fore, while the film featured numerous special effects to capture the thrill of the freely-adapted One Thousand and One Nights folk tales. The film was an important career step for future Chinese-American movie star, Anna May Wong, who is given the role of a treacherous Mongol slave in the picture. Pt. 2 of tonight’s double feature (or maybe triple if I’m inspired) the 1924 silent fantasy The Thief of Bagdad, directed by Raoul Walsh, but ushered into existence by producer-writer (of the story idea, not the script)-star Douglas Fairbanks, a powerful force in Hollywood since his ascendance in the late 1910s, and continuing through to the end of the silent era. He popularized (invented maybe?) the swashbuckling action-adventure film and rode it for all it was worth. His films of the time set the template followed for this type of action film for decades afterward, and this visual spectacle, with effects by the great art director William Cameron Menzies, spared no expense to make it spectacular (and also make it one of the most expensive films of its time).
