One of the best parts of screening the movie, was seeing people react to @bryedfernelius as Chaco. As originally written, Chaco was a mean, vicious character. I had written him with a different actor in mind. But when Bryce auditioned, it was clear that I needed to abandon my preconceived notions, and allow the character to change as the story required. Now, Chaco is almost 100% different than originally designed, and it’s 100% better! Bryce brought this character to life in a way that was truly magical. While it’s okay to have strong ideas about your characters, film is a collaborative medium. Don’t be so blind to think that your ideas are the best. Check your ego and let others do their jobs. Trust them. Thanks Bryce for making Chaco the wonderful character that he is! • • • #thecounterfeitkid #falcon85films #filmmaking #filmmakingtips #bts #actor #screenplay #moviemagic #collaboration #actinginfilms #wyomingfilm #western

Margot Robbie. What I love here is how she found the character. Every actor has a different process for getting there. Some use prosthetics. Others costume. Others a phrase. Others, long research. I am sometimes frustrated that crews complain about an actor’s eccentric process. The fact is it is hard. The fact is we are all obliged to support each other creatively and not judge how other artists achieve what they do. In fact I love our differences, our madness, our strangeness and our differences in process. It’s why film sets are magical places. It’s why the totality of what we create is greater than the sum of our parts.

Dressing the character. She doesn’t mean just what a character wears, although that absolutely can be part of it. She says the magic word. “Code”. So it’s not performance all the time every minute. Not conscious performance anyway. But gestures. Bearing. Physicality. Wholly inhabit the character and then once shooting begins “stop working.” Great advice from the brilliant Tilda Swinton.

Improv! Unscripted. They just take a scene description, some general intentions, and then run with it. Listen to the uneven rhythm of the exchange. Watch them thinking and listening and look at the focus not on the coming narrative payoff, but the absurd minutia of life. Of life! That’s the thing. The unpracticed and the imperfect references ordinary life and that builds the emotive bridge in drama and comedy. I love writing. But I love the magic of improv too.

4/4/2022, 5:56:59 PM

One of the most successful writers in the history of television. And he trusts the discovery of improvisation. Part of film is planning but part is discovery. Fear and money makes us over-plan. We hope and think everything is in the screenplay. It isn’t. It doesn’t mean you have to go to this extreme, but to relax, listen and be open to work with your actors as their instincts take them places you didn’t anticipate is a magical thing.

It’s imperfection that we want. We want to vicariously live other lives via the films we watch, but lives of living, breathing people full of fear, need, vulnerability and all those shortcomings and qualities that define them. And us. And the delightful mess that is the human condition.

Wow. I mean, wow. Actors have to be protected. If they get injured the film shuts down. Insurance companies want you to use stunt doubles, particularly for wide shots where you can’t tell the difference. But not here. What’s great about the sequence is not the narrative but the visceral impact on audience. This is what you want as a filmmaker, for the audience to share what the characters are experiencing. That extends beyond stunts (they will paint the wires out later), to writing, cinematography, editing, sound, design, directing and performance. A foundation in object reality is essential. The audience should think; here on the screen are people like us. So show your charactor’s fear and imperfections. Perfect isn’t a living thing.

2/5/2022, 11:42:20 PM

Rhys Ifans. Glad to see my friend and collaborator (Last Call) having so much damn fun in The King’s Man. What makes Rhys special is not just his considerable skill but the irony and humor he brings as part of the package. Actors sometimes play a single note, but there is always much complex layering with Rhys; he’s a delight to witness and direct. This new film should be a great.

12/23/2021, 5:35:38 PM

Exactly. In performance but also in directing and writing and even cinematography we want to draw attention to our work and say “look at what I am doing.” But do the opposite. Do nothing. There is time over the course of the piece. But first let the audience know there is a foundation that is wholly real.

11/22/2021, 4:24:09 PM

Here is the secret. In film, in writing the power and the glory comes not in explosions, and script structure and pay-offs of plot points. It comes in the revelation of truth. And truth that announces itself in the stuttering hesitancy of real human behavior. It reveals itself in inconsistency, in the tangential and the confused. Life isn’t lived via a script we have written, though we wish it was. It is a tragic, comic adventure of half-thoughts, uncommitted actions, regrets, errors and small successes. When our art portrays life as it is shown here (watch as he pauses TO THINK) then it touches a part of us, and our audience, that matters. And a secret part of us vibrates powerfully in that metaphysical harmonic. Tell the truth. Show the truth. Be truthful in performance. In other words be imperfect in all the things you write and create to touch your imperfect audience.

11/14/2021, 3:46:32 PM

Last Night in Soho is stunning. Here its director Edgar Wright talks about his collaboration with his cinematographer. Collaboration is a huge part of directing as is casting. They are in fact related. It’s not choosing people who you can instruct, but rather choosing people who you can inspire, who then can themselves creatively contribute to the mix. Directing is about leadership.

10/30/2021, 5:36:07 PM

It’s hard to explain why but when a set is a joyous place, with skilled crew who love and protect performance and facilitate it, then it reflects on screen. The happiest sets I have been on have also engendered the most successful films. So from what I see here I am looking forward to Last Night in Soho.

10/26/2021, 6:44:56 PM

If you haven’t seen this you must!!! The masterpiece of a series, Normal People. I love the writing but I particularly love the directing and the acting. Watch the patience here; these are people listening to each other, thinking about what to say, and also carefully thinking about what they shouldn’t say. The viewer never feels for a moment that anything they are witnessing is practiced or rehearsed. It seems entirely real and thereby removes the largest obstacle to genuine emotional connection with the characters. It’s at moments like this that film becomes art and alters us. We can live other’s lives vicariously; experience their damage and regrets without ourselves being wounded, and gain the wisdom born of pain, without the suffering. Well, without the abject suffering of actual life. How noble and brave to make something about, well, normal people without contrivance, noise, guns, effects or explosions.

10/23/2021, 8:56:49 PM

This is important. The relationship between the real world and the film world. Things in film resemble the real world, but they are not real. They are altered. Consider something like acting. We think we want actors word perfect, but when an actor stumbles, or forgets or repeats, suddenly they are closer to the world as we actually experience it. So the impact is greater when things happen to them; because they are “real” people. The inverse is also true. Even when we manipulate the image the audience still looks for things that resemble the human experience. So we can do little, contort a lot and still connect. Thinking about film’s relationship to the physical world is essential. The complex film equation is about more things than just story.

10/6/2021, 6:31:06 PM

The great Keegan-Michael Key speaking wisdom. There is thinking, there is dreaming and there is doing. Doing is special and brave and most importantly necessary. You can spend forever thinking of the consequences of action; at some point you go beyond caution to fear and paralysis, then it is over before it began. Please go out and fail, as you will each time until you succeed. But you will only succeed if you take action.

9/12/2021, 5:50:05 PM

Discovery vs planning is at the heart of so much of the decision making at the core of filmmaking/theater. We write to start the process. We think. We read what we have written and discover rhythms, structures and dynamics we weren’t aware of when we were writing. We rewrite. Same thing again. We give that script or the next draft to a reader and they react. Right or wrong their reaction is interesting and we start the process of thinking and discovery yet again. Then, later, come the actors and when we hear what we wrote in their mouths, we discover new things yet again. Then rehearsals which may also lead to some adjustments or alterations. Then later we start making decisions about how we will use the camera. And that starts with a plan that also changes. So yes, we begin everything with a plan, but then everything changes as we discover things through the creative process. It is an essential evolution.

8/28/2021, 7:14:55 PM

This is some of the greatest screenwriting you will experience. Mum. A masterpiece. What you see here is a character NOT saying things. Each time we as the audience want her to, each time we are mouthing the response, she says this instead. And that is the point. What is valuable to me about having been a cinematographer before I was a screenwriter is I learned the importance of those moments when the actor isn’t speaking. Like haiku, the less writ the more the potential meaning or in performance the less spoke the more implied. But what is happening here is special. It is the definition of the character that she feels no need to correct, defeat, humiliate or even defend. Brilliantly, the writer makes the audience behave compulsively even as the character does not. And Lesley Manville with the many subtle nuances of the ordinary, making her brilliant gifts seem like normal human interactions, is sublime. If you are a writer, an actor or a human being you should watch this series.

To understand the nature of all films look at action films. It’s not that they necessarily always have sophisticated dialogue, but they clearly identify something in audience; that there is a response to the visceral that is part of the experience of cinema going. This isn’t to say that every film has to launch cars in the air or needs gunfire. But a filmmaker has to recognize primal audience responses independent of narrative. Something as simple as a kiss, or a camera movement revealing a beautiful vista, or an actor staring straight into the camera and saying nothing…so many things engage audience and illicit emotive responses and are part of the language of the filmmaker. But because story has been codified we focus more on that; but many things alter audience feelings and thoughts. Everything has to be examined in the creation of the film fabric. Some things we have to intuit but via study of things like these images. Why do we respond to them?

7/16/2021, 8:11:43 PM

So fantastically strange, but that is the point. To make all films in the same way is to only present the world from a single perspective. To ALTER the world through art/film, changes the audience’s understanding of everything portrayed. It’s not to say the world is surreal. But simply to cause ordinary things to be looked at differently. It is in the eccentricity of form, structure, composition, performance, design, editing and narrative that experience is reshaped and there is a greater chance of a unique engagement with the film goer. It means for the filmmaker taking risks and violating norms, but isn’t that what we are meant to do?

7/13/2021, 7:05:15 PM

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Samantha Morton. I worked with them both. I had the pleasure of directing Samantha as the lead in my feature Decoding Annie Parker and I worked with Jeffrey on the TV series Magic City. I love them both. What is great about directing is the chance to work with different actors who have different processes. What is great about having been a cinematographer and then writing and directing is coming at film with an understanding that it is a synergy of many languages; the script of course, but also lighting, and camera movement and composition, and then editing rhythms and music and so much more, including performance. A director is first and foremost a leader, who must facilitate other creative artists. If you inspire, you can achieve great things. If you try to do it all yourself you will fail. But more than that. Use all the things available to you. It is an orchestra playing together lead by a conductor not a soloist.

The camera is a massive amplifier and the closeup is like setting your volume to 12. Then it is up to the actor to do the small, the nuanced and the delicate. It’s like we are seeing a secret hidden self when the parts of the performance are microscopic. It seems as if virtually every performance benefits from doing less or doing it smaller. This particular moment is a master class. Carey Mulligan.

I like overlaps in dialogue. Everyone will tell you not to do it, but I did it here in my film Last Call and it works. The actors acquire an intensity and a more organic rhythm to their speech. I also secretly agreed some small variations in the script with each actor so they would surprise each other and be entirely in the moment. I also used multiple cameras to capture both sides, which is essential when using these methods. I love the result. I hope you do to.

Actors are brave or not brave, but either way it is an act of great courage to get in front of a camera. To facilitate them we have an obligation to let them know that the set is a safe place for them to take risks, that we will speak to them honestly so they know when they get it right or get it wrong, and they won’t believe the former if we don’t tell them about the later. We should have a quiet set, certainly clearing the eye-line , but also eliminating all the distractions. A set can seem like a construction site, it isn’t, it certainly isn’t for the actors. When giving notes to the actors, I think it’s essential that you walk to them and speak to them privately and not yell from behind the monitors. The director is part of the actor’s private world. All these things facilitate performance, and it’s worth it, because actors are accessing parts of themselves which is hard if not impossible for anyone else to do. That’s why I think they are magnificent. The actress here is Vanessa Kirby. Fantastic.

I love this. What is fascinating is how many layers he is playing simultaneously. I worry when giving a note to an actor they will play an single intention. I don’t know if that is the way we mediate the world. I think the world is a confused place and our reaction to that which it provides or denies us is also confused or at least multilayered. Look at what he is playing here. Regret, sadness, desperation, frustration and anger. So how do we determine who he is? Well, how do we determine who anyone is? It’s the compelling mystery of the human condition and as film and performance replicates it, so it engages us as we recognize our secret selves, not at this moment crying out, but wanting too.
