But it does claim its own active and collaborative community of filmmakers with a passion for telling stories. William Jacobs, the founder of Mourning Dove Films, says his passion for making films began at age 7, when he got a Lego movie-making set. “My parents were very generous. They allowed me to set up a little station in the basement,” Jacobs said. “I had a table with a Lego city, and the kit came with its own web camera that you could use the software – they made it very easy for young people to create stop-motion animation films. "BEAUTY" Film Vault. There is a quality that this film gives that is so mystical. I am personally touched deeply by what film can do just through imagery. I am a person who tries to connect to the soul and the universe around me. I would say that film is an act of creating magic and reflecting the universe in a direct way. Through the use of light, and mirrors an image is created that reveals the deepest colors that we can see as humans. This shot is reflective of the memory idea in BEAUTY. A couple that is happy, together and united. The way the film dissolves was not intended, but made the connection between the past and the present so clear. Some vaulted film footage that was cut from "BEAUTY." We used a K3 16mm to shoot Kodak Color Reversal Film. The camera gate was so old that the film shook as it roled. But somehow, the imagery fit the film. The purpose of using the film was to portray a window into the memory of the characters. Memory can seem so vivid and clear, yet things are not always what we remember them to be. "Tea" was a film that hit many people. I was surprised by the audience reactions, whenever I showed this film. It's such a short piece, but that is also the point of it. It's about a man who is sick and goes to the corner store to buy tea and on his way back home he is stopped by an undercover cop. It was meant to capture the feeling of a going through a traumatic moment in our lives that passes by in an instant, and not realizing or feeling any of the emotion until later on, when we think about what happened. Kind of like when someone says something funny about you and later on you think of a great come back... Except here, things could turn dangerous in any moment. I also wanted to make a film about police brutality in America. During the time this film was made, there was a lot of upheaval throughout the country over police brutality. I wanted to show a smaller moment. This film is directly connected to my own life, though it is not a autobiography, I have had a few experiences dealing with cops in the same way that the main character in this film has. This project was both a release and a statement. Love Birds was a very small but very political film. In many ways, I did not expect to make this movie. This film was a lesson in for me that in a way, we as artist do not choose the films we set out to make, the universe chooses the film that is made for us. This film stretched me in creativity and was a test in my ability to speak about a political issue while still keeping it light enough for audiences to enjoy. When this film was screened at a few festivals around the city I was surprised at the laughs that it got in different places. It convinced me that I can do humor in my work. Strange that the film prior to this one was a horror film and right after I did a comedy. To me, those two genres are identical. Systemic was a an important film for me because it allowed me to express my self through mood and tone rather than through story. During the time that I was making this I was responding to the world around me. There was a lot of racial triggers and of course, police brutality was a huge issue. This was a dark fantasy, horror film that allowed me to go outside of my comfort zone. It really did stretch me thin and reflecting on it, there's a lot of good stuff in this film that I think I was just too young of a filmmaker to get across in an accurate and pointed way. Either way, I still appreciate the work. My Friend John was a film very dear to my heart. It's one of those films where I was able to tackle subject matter and genre in a way that I really appreciated. Looking back at it now, it's something that I refer to when trying to figure out where to go with my work. This film was my way of taking my massive influence of Hayao Miyazaki and what I saw as childhood wonder and putting that into reality. During the time the work was a hard and had been the first time I ever worked with an actual crew on a set. Made many mistakes on and off the set that I am thankful to have survived, reflected and learned from. A big thing for me is growing. I'm always trying to grow as an artist. "Beauty" was the final installment of the "Relationship Trilogy." I was able to make this film with the help of the @qnsarts and their New Work Grant. I was honored to receive this grant and the money went in full to the production. I tried to really think outside of the box with this piece. Similar to "Bliss" this film is about the last day in a married couple relationship as they divorce and separate by moving out of their home. Dreams and Nature play a huge role in this film and is the way that the couple is able to stay connected to each other. We used a total of 4 different type of media in this film. We used 16mm @kodak color film that was shot on a K3 camera, we used an old Sony DCR Video Tape camera that had a cool zoom on it, we used a Cannon 60D camera and we used a Black Magic 4k camera. Each type of media was used for different portions of the film. Memories were shot on 16mm film and Tape to give the feeling of history and looking through a small dirty window at a distant past. Dreams were shot on the 60D so that it gave the feeling of distance, and fuzziness. The present was shot in 4k. This film was a combination of dark fantasy and romance. It was a work of pure subconscious art. When I watch this film over sometime I wonder what all the symbols in it mean, but when creating from the subconscious I think it's better to not question it. I learned a tremendous amount about style and form from making this piece. Form should be an after thought to a film, it should be injected into the script writing process. It's funny, though, because though I learned this I didn't actually start implementing the lessons till a few years later. A work like this speaks for itself. I remember when the shoot was done I fell asleep and didn't realize it. When I woke up it was morning and we still had to pack our things and leave the set! This film "Bliss" was the second in the "Relationship Trilogy" and it was difficult to shoot because on the day that we shot a blizzard hit the city. But back then, everyone was prepared and ready to work. I was really thankful for the people I had behind me back then. This film was influenced by the shooting style of Yasujiro Ozu, and the stories of Ingmar Bergman. It was a interesting mix. Completely different from what "Cherries With Charlotte" was and I think that was because I was experimenting. I was more concerned with copying during these years than expressing my own true voice. I believe that this is the path of every artist. Imitate and evolve. I'm still evolving. The movie is named "Bliss" but it's not so blissful. It's about a breakup and the whole film takes place in one day and during an argument where each person is mad at the other and refuses to talk. I'm sure that everyone has experienced this with a significant other in their lives or a family member. I tried to capture that tenseness, awkwardness and anger in those moments that we experience. There's only one line of dialogue at the end of the movie. The blizzard was actually a blessing in disguise because it reflected the content of the movie perfectly. It made things hard that day, but man it was beautiful to shoot. and cold as hell. I'm looking over a lot of my old work. It's very reflective and makes me think of all kinds of memories, both good and bad. But I think that is what filmmaking does. Each film is a time capsule that contains a time period in a persons life. This film "Cherries with Charlotte" was heavily inspired by the French New Wave crime films from Godard and Jean-Pierre Melville, among others. I wanted to do a avant-garde genre crime film in a guerilla filmmaking style with black people as the leads. It is also the first in a trilogy of short films that I made called "The Relationship Trilogy" Each of these films were connected by love and heartbreak between people. When I made this film, I was at a point in my life where I was doubting my skills and abilities as an artist. I needed to just create something without any pressures, just to prove to myself that I could do it. It was a short film and it was difficult to make because I didn't have a huge crew. I set fire to myself and just ran with it. After I completed it, I gained confidence. It was never shown and is still in the vault, but it was a way for me to grow. Just making it showed me what I needed to work on and what I needed to do to get better. I thought at that time that It was enough, but in reality, my journey was just beginning.
