If I take it with me on a trip, you know it's a favorite. 🧳 I used to be terrified of ruining my handmade items so I hardly ever wore them. No way was I going to risk ruining them on a trip. Over time though, I realized my favorite pieces were the ones I wore most so I decided to focus on making a wardrobe I could wear anywhere. Now, taking it on a trip is a testament to how much I love it. My criteria for packing light: comfortable (a lot of cotton/linen), versatile (usually means more separates that I can mix and march), and safe to be machine wash/dried (I don't usually have time for it to hang dry). Here are the handmade items I packed for a recent trip: -Cottesloe swimsuit. It's one of the first ones I made and still the most comfortable one I have for some reason. #MNCottesloe -rust linen/rayon blend Reynolds tank top. #ReynoldsTop -striped tank. Me Made May, Day 3: This top is one of the very first garments I ever made. I feel so proud to be wearing it today! 🥹 And let’s talk about these jeans. Ok, so I did not love these at first. The fabric felt a bit too stiff for stretch/skinny jeans. That’s one of the reasons I prefer thrifting my jeans: that buttery vintage worn-in feeling is priceless! But I did end up going back and letting out some of the seam, and am planning on distressing these out a bit next with some grit, aka sandpaper. I like this outfit because of how bright it is. And the 🍋 print speaks to my #clearspring color palette! Still coming up for air from this amazing Asian adventure. I was happy to have some memades to wear while visiting Chang Mai, Thailand. If you’ve seen me in person in the past month you’ve probably seen me in these overalls. I finished them a few weeks back, have been wearing them nearly nonstop since, but only stopped to take a pic today. This is the #greerjumpsuit from @heyjunehandmade view B in a straight size 16. The only adjustments I made were to slightly widen the front bib and modify the shoulder straps. Rather than floppy shoulder ties, I thought these knots/buttonholes would be more secure. So far so good. I used black bull denim and I like the sturdiness of the bottom weight fabric for this pattern (though I have seen very cute linen versions on IG). I’m pretty obsessed with these and want to make more in a bolder color or pattern. Next time I might add back pockets and do actual buttons on the straps instead of just knots, but otherwise… no notes! Carrying too many things per usual (grew these peonies myself!), #adventuretank was one of the first things I ever sewed and the neckline is all wonky but I still love this garment because it’s Rifle rayon, it hasn’t faded, and it feels great on the body. Yellow wool ponte deadstock (sustainable!) #fultonsweaterblazer . I like this garment and it’s got WAY less of a potato quotient than my Unfolding Jacket (which I have since given away), BUT I feel like the heavy facings make the lapels flip around a bunch. I can make it look perfect for a photo but I’m futzing with them for the rest of the day. Maybe this ponte isn’t rigid enough? Still, it’s a nice work layer. Potato quotient 4, it’s not doing a lot but it’s not a sack. #memademay

#memademay2023 Day 24 This shirt is a happy accident: The fabric was a remnant from another seamstress' stash, and I thought I could squeeze out a #mandyboattee by cutting the sleeves with the greatest stretch going over the length of the sleeves. But, the Mandy Boat sleeves are snug to begin with, and I have strong arms, so all in all, not a good plan. I finally ended up cutting off the sleeves and using the #adventuretank arm holes and bands, and that actually worked out great. So, I guess I now have a Mandy Boat Adventure Tank 😄 Also wearing my #angelfaceturban and of course handmade underwear and handknit socks. #mmm2023 #memademay #wearhandmade #makeitwork

Me Made May Day 14 was a whirlwind with lots of little gem moments. For those following along with my house finch chick nesting situation, today we got to see the finale. In a perfectly timed Mother’s Day send off, we noticed the chicks bravely emerging from the nest and got to see the last two tentatively take flight. It felt like an auspicious moment. The first of my outfits in the mirror selfie for today was the EA Saturday Shorts by @enderallsews paired with an Adventure Tank by @fancytigercrafts. I wore this for a casual bike ride with the family, got sweaty, and showered and changed. Today’s second outfit was a Demeter by @AnnaAllenClothing with the same type of cotton hemp from @Blackbird that’s shown up several times this week in different colors. I like this dress as a casual weekend one mostly. I wore it while tearing through cutting some fabric and sewing the most delicious Hallon Dress that I will likely wear the next day that can be classified as hot. Zooey made her first cake today, 90 percent by herself. Matt and I watched the newest Hannah Gadsby special and I almost peed by pants laughing thrice while watching it. Happy #MeMadeMay2023! ✨ I've loved this challenge in years past for connection and inspiration, but I don't know if I'll participate much this year. My previous pledges have always been designed to challenge myself to grow as a maker, but I no longer feel like I need the incentive. I also haven't been making much lately. I started my handmade wardrobe in 2018 and have since made a lot of staple pieces that I reach for often. Nothing's really worn out. I haven't pattern tested or done promos in more than a year (having slowed down even longer than that) and only purchase a new pattern if I absolutely know I don't have anything else like it. I also wear handmade as often as possible since my personal style and habits shaped what I wanted to make. It's taken years to get here and I'm grateful for the journey. At this point, I'm toying with the idea of cleaning out my entire closet and letting go of the pieces I don't love or wear. I've been trying to do this for a couple of years now, but letting go of handmade has always been hard for me. Are you participating in Me Made May? What's your goal? Our first visit to the UK! 🇬🇧 Other than the cruise, this was the kids' first international trip and they handled it so well. Andrew was the best planner and figured out our entire itinerary which was no small feat with everything being a timed entry. There really is so much to do in the UK and we definitely didn't do it all, but we managed to fit in quite a bit in 10 days. Places we visited: Bath, York, Wales, and London. We drove several of these routes which was apparently unusual whenever it came up in conversation. For anyone interested in my travel capsule, I packed for 10 days with what I wore there and in a medium sized travel cube. In total, I brought 3 tank tops, a t-shirt, 2 pairs of shorts, a pair of pants, a skirt, a dress, a jacket, a rain jacket, undergarments, sneakers, and sandals. We were there during the heatwave so I didn't end up needing my jacket and only used my rain jacket once. We also did laundry at a local launderette in the middle of the trip. Last day of vacation, a vacation in which we worked hard nearly every day. I took today off of farm work and climbed three mountains, because I’m a little crazy, but the climb was glorious even if it was too foggy to see much from the summits. It must have happened when I slid down a slippery rock face on my butt, but I think I can repair it since it’s on the seam. That time I accidentally made a sleepwear capsule. I’ve you’ve been around for a while, you might remember that sleepwear I like has been an elusive thing for years. I’m a hot sleeper but don’t like my legs to touch. I’m too hot in pants but hate how shorts with an elastic waistband rides up. I’ve made/ bough so many sets of PJs and still am not 100 per cent happy. Anyway, I made a matching lounge set a few weeks ago, but together it was just way too much camel stripe. I realized that it matched with another PJ set I had been wearing (perks of having a strict colour palette) so I mixed and matched! Wearing today: I worked from home today to avoid driving my car as it has a malfunction that is steadily getting worse. I have an appointment to diagnose the issue next week. But it was a beautiful day today and I worked part of it outside, so who can complain? It’s day 23 of Me Made May. Another #ZWGatherDress?! Yes. I’m obsessed. This pattern by @birgittahelmersson and was overjoyed to put it together with this yarn dyed linen fabric from @blackbirdfabrics. This was my first choice for the pattern when I decided to make it, but I decided not to risk it and instead made it with the apricot cotton hemp blend (which I also love). The color palette on this current fabric fills me with absolute joy and is a perfect remedy to the cooler gray day we are having here. This feels like a works for everything kind of dress. It can be worn open as a duster, I can roll up the sleeves and have short sleeves, and it can be an impromptu robe or swimsuit cover up. Beneath the dress is a pair of #AveryLeggings by @Helens__Closet and an #AdventureTank by @FancyTigerCrafts. It’s hard to believe it’s May already. April passed in the blink of an eye. Today is the first day of #MeMadeMay and I’ve been lounging in these @StyleArc Bob Pants in some @BlackbirdFabrics double gauze. Truthfully, I was wearing a RTW shirt most of the day, but swapped it for this @FancyTigerCrafts Adventure Tank for this picture. I obsessively sewed three of these tops the week before last in pale pink, navy, and brown. I’m sure there will be more than that, as this is the perfect easy summer top. The last time I made an Adventure Tank it was before being gifted a serger and it seemed fiddly at the time. They were quick and easy with the serger, although I sometimes still struggle to be precise with arm and neck bands if I go to quickly on the serger. It’s a powerful machine. I love Bob pants so much. They’re comfy and easy to execute. In lightweight fabric they are a dream for warmer weather. I have more double gauze in a clay reddish brown color that might turn into another pair of Bob’s. I made this lively color first since it screamed SPRING to me. I finally perfected my Bob pant making by changing the pocket bags into slash pockets, using the pocket from Arthur Pants as a template. I made sure the curve of the hip of the pants matched. This is a better pocket placement for me. This pair has easily become my favorite because of the dreamy breezy fabric and change in the pockets. The last of my first major project of the year - updating my running clothes. 3 pairs of tights, 1 pair of winter tights, 1 pair of shorts, and here showing 2 of 4 tops. Two long sleeve with thumb holes; two sleeveless from the leftovers. Fabric is a merino wool/nylon which has the advantage of never getting stinky. Working on updating some of my running/workout clothes. First up are two pairs of leggings. These were a bit complex because of the color blocking and the pockets. A combo of sewing a size too big and stretching the arm and neck holes a little too much while attaching the bands has made this #adventuretank not my favorite project in recent history, but I still see it getting a lot of wear during the hottest parts of summer. Maybe as a breezy workout too if I ever find the space to start running again? I’m making myself finish another WIP or two before trying this again smaller and more carefully, but looking forward to perfecting a knit tank pattern I like as much as the woven tank pattern I’ve been making this winter!

But here, where we’re living, the ground is never cold. The trees never sleep & they certainly don’t rest. Roots never ponder—they’re too busy growing. Blue is the sky’s favorite color. The new year is the same as the year before. Hot, humid, ripening. There’s always a seed to plant, a weed to pick. And if you come home with your hands empty, you weren’t looking. There’s always something ready to harvest. Because this landscape never tires. It’s like a wide-eyed child. Always ready, always eager, always on the verge of some gleeful thing. What’s a girl to do but join in the revelry of this wild place? The farmer-husband has been busy nurturing seedlings & amending the soil on this little terraced plot of ground. Today we transplanted tomatoes, watermelons, winged beans, lima beans, sweet potatoes, pigeon pea & spinach. The pests are outrageous so he’s been spending the remainder of his time researching organic solutions. Right now, a home-made wood vinegar is top on his list. We’ll keep you posted. And yes, that’s a machete our five-year-old is holding. 😬 Star Fruit In Spanish, the word for this fruit is carambola. Say it slow. Had a bit of a drive today to get our car tested and took advantage of that by visiting the beautiful villages of Cantavieja and Iglesuela. I wore only memades today!
