The summer session is a PAID opportunity and youth will have the chance to learn Afro-Latin dance, music, or theatre in a supportive, creative environment. On this first day of #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth, I would like to express my appreciation for this person right here. In my 16+ years as a guest in this discipline, I don’t know another individual who has taken more *consistent* responsibility for the past, present, and future of Afro-Latin dance and the music and culture it originates from. From conceptualizing a formalized system of training, to re-envisioning the style and format of ethnic dance performance to include full-length, concert-dance productions, Frankie continues to shape the landscape of this art-form. And if his 20+ years of work and experience hasn’t demonstrated this enough, the care he has taken of his local and global community these past 18 months should say it all. You are a true artist, a true educator, and probably more important than anything right now, a true leader. Afro-Latin music is such a beautifully rich and diverse genre, filled with an extensive range of complex rhythms, styles, and sentiments. As a choreographer and performing artist, I consider it both an honor and a responsibility to challenge myself and audiences by composing pieces that demonstrate just how versatile and sophisticated this music and the cultures it stems from, are. “Song for My Father” is a well known and loved standard composed by jazz pianist, Horace Silver (1964). Influenced by his experience in Brazil and the rhythmical concept of Bossa Nova, as well as the Portuguese folk music of his father’s native country, Cape Verde, this song infused with African, Latin, and Black-American influences, and since it’s release, has inspired musicians of all genres. Originally composed as a duet to Bobby Valentin’s rendition, I recently shared this piece as a solo at @thejamaicadancefestival.
