En 1963 compuso el mambo «Oye cómo va», popularizado por Carlos Santana en 1970, y grabado, entre otros, por Celia Cruz, Julio Iglesias, Irakere, Kinky, Cheo Feliciano, Azúcar Moreno y José Feliciano. Entre producciones propias y colaboraciones, grabó 198 discos.

According to Wikipedia, “The son of Ernest and Ercilia Puente, native Puerto Ricans living in New York City’s Spanish Harlem, Puente is often credited as “The Musical Pope”, “El Rey de los Timbales” (The King of the Timbales) and “The King of Latin Music”. He is best known for dance-oriented mambo and Latin jazz compositions that endured over a 50-year career. He and his music appear in many films such as The Mambo Kings and Fernando Trueba’s Calle 54. He guest-starred on several television shows, including Sesame Street and The Simpsons two-part episode “Who Shot Mr. Burns?”. His most famous song is “Oye Como Va”.” May he Rest In Peace. Today I celebrate Tito Puente’s birthday with this mambo he arranged for Rafael Cortijo. Puente was in Borinquen and collaborated with Rafa who didn’t have a band at the time when Ismael Rivera was returning to his Island home. Puente offered his band and arranging skills to Cortijo sitting with him at the piano transcribing as the Plena / Bomba master dictated the sound he wanted. They were boys that way! For this fast placed “mambo,” Cortijo wanted a dynamic presence for Maelo and this little number was a folkloric tune given to him by Celia Cruz with Guliver as metaphor for the U.S. giant. Enjoy!
