. . Yesterday, Facebook’s algorithm reflected a ‘memory’ reminding me that @harleydurst took me along to my first ever yoga class 13 years ago in Melbourne when I was touring with @dinosaurlive back in 2011.. . . I recall it was a hot 90 minute Bikram session, in which I grunted, grimaced and gurned my way throughout ~ whilst the teacher instructed me publicly and repeatedly to relax my face. 😝 . . Despite the suffering, I knew I’d be back. . . It’s been quite a journey since then, both on and off the mat. I’ve attended hundreds of classes in various styles in many different countries across the world. I completed a 200 hour YTT in India in 2019 and now enjoy a feeling somewhat akin to that of coming home when arriving on the mat. . . Truthfully, although I’m still just a baby with an imperfect and inconsistent practice ~ the physical and internal benefits reaped over the last 13 years have influenced me greatly both as a performer and as a human, clumsily navigating his way through this experience we call life. . . I’m grateful for the enlightened masters and dedicated teachers who came before and kept the science of yoga resonating throughout the ages. . . Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu . . Specifically, I ask whether being unbiased requires giving equal weight to all possible explanations, and withholding criticism. What is it that you want, that you think you’re going to get by sitting and waiting for it? You want more inner peace? You’re going to have to take radical responsibility for your boundaries. Yes, hard conversations. Yes, disappointing people. You want more balance? You’re going to have to take radical responsibility for how you react when things don’t go your way so you learn how to keep yourself steady. Yes, you’re gonna have to make hard choices. Yes, a lot of honesty with yourself about where you’re OUT of balance. You want more happiness? You’re going to have to take radical responsibility for accepting the things you can’t change, and changing the things you can’t accept. Yes, hard things will always be there. Yes, gratitude even when you don’t feel like it. And yes - hard work. If you want it, you’re going to be waiting forever if you sit and wait. If you want it, you’re going to have to start showing up. So this is our loving challenge to you: stop waiting. Say what you want out loud, and then take radical responsibility for doing the work to work on it. It won’t be fast, or easy. It assumes nothing and introduces the topic of Yoga and Philosophy at an introductory level. It covers all the basic texts of Yoga Philosophy (the Upaniṣads, Yoga Sūtra, Bhagavad Gītā, Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā) the similarity and differences between Yoga and various forms of Vedānta, contrary South Asian philosophies like Buddhism and Jainism, and Western philosophies that are usually confused with Yoga in Western contexts: Plato, Aristotle and Stoicism. It was designed to address all the topics prescribed for Yoga Humanities portions of Yoga Teacher Trainings, including Yoga Ethics. It comes with reflection questions at the end of each chapter, and a free online course. Unlike other books on Yoga and philosophy this begins with the basics of critical thinking and logic---skills you need to unpack Yoga. The book also addresses the difference between 'modern' yoga and precolonial yoga, and provides practical guidance for synergizing your yoga practice with the ancient de-colonial philosophy of Yoga, which in contrast to colonialism is about your and everyone's autonomy! || TEACHER TAKEOVER || Hello! I’m Kristen and this week is my teacher takeover. This question is a hard one for me to answer, I really struggled with it: “What inspires you.” As a yoga teacher, it’s part of my job to find inspiration and stay inspired. I am always incredibly inspired by my students and the way they show up dedicated to their practice and their spiritual path. When I got this question, I had an easier answer: Right now we are in the middle of a teacher training and the trainees are so thirsty for knowledge and self discovery. It’s such a rewarding experience to be one of their guides. My students may not realize, but they are always inspiring me to go deeper and fill me up more than they will ever know. Especially because I’m inspired by those who overcome obstacles. Who are able to turn challenges into learning opportunities; who grow and move forward, rather than shutting down. And then I had arrived at the harder answer: I inspire myself. I was afraid to say that, because it felt a little conceited. But if I’m so inspired by my students who are willing to go deeper, shouldn’t I answer that question with honesty? If I’m inspired by people who overcome obstacles, should I not also acknowledge myself? I am inspired by me. Because I keep getting up and trucking no matter how much shit life throws at me. And I think that is the beauty of our yoga community… it’s a circle. It assumes nothing and introduces the topic of Yoga and Philosophy at an introductory level. || TEACHER TAKEOVER || Hello! I’m Kristen and this week is my teacher takeover. I’ll be sharing on instagram and in the newsletter things that are part of my yoga practice. Recently, I said to a friend in response to something that had happened: “it is what it is”. And he said… “I hate that saying. It is what you make of it.” And I thought - well actually, it’s both. There are things life throws at us that we cannot control… that’s: it is what it is. BUT we can work with how we respond… that’s: it is what you make of it. It reminded me of what is sometimes referred to as the two wings of yoga in the spiritual text of The Yoga Sutras. Sutra 1.12 states abhyāsa-vairāgya-ābhyāṁ tan-nirodha - which translates to: Practice and Non-Attachment. The two ways we work with our mind. These teachings are meant to be integrated and studied over a lifetime, but this sutra is always challenging for me to understand and embrace. These two wings need to work together; practice and non-attachment. I can really take my time to write this or prepare a yoga class, that’s the practice part. It’s the showing up with our best effort. (It is what we make of it.) But, I cannot control what you think when you read these words or show up to class. I can do my best and then I have to let go. (It is what it is.) But… then I can learn more and grow more and try again! Back to it is what I make of it. This idea encourages us to distinguish what we can influence, and what is out of our hands. It is a practice of showing up and surrendering simultaneously: back and forth, again and again. Part 1, Yoga Ethics and Western Impositions Part 2, Yoga Ethics and South Asian Alternatives Part 3, Yoga Ethics and Activism When I began my research in South Asian Studies (SAS), the dominant view among people who fancied themselves scholars of South Asia was that there was no extensive or significant history of thinking critically about ethical, moral and political questions. This means, there wouldn't be any such thing as Yoga Ethics. My lonely distinction as a researcher since the 1990s has been to show that this narrative gets things upside down. Ethics or moral philosophy was the basic concern in this tradition (philosophy about dharma) and the usual gloss that denies that South Asians engaged critically in moral and practical questions is a function of Western colonialism and its anti-logical approach to everything.
