I was going to write that I have no words but my heart is full and my face no longer tomato-matched. 😂 But that’s a lie. Not the bit about my heart or my face, but about having words on this. I do. I have words for this incredible feeling of strength. Having hiked and swum and climbed and walked and only feeling better for it. Words for the pride and happiness in this now being my life. And my sustained condition. That I’ve rebuilt adventure-Hanne, true to spirit and all that I come from. That I’ve regained my freedom; of choice and possibility in energy and resources. I am free. I am so free. And it makes me wanna laugh-snort-cry and jump up and down so they can see my ear-to-ear smile appear in the window at regular intervals from the apartments across the lawn. But for now it is the most beautiful thing to just lie here and feel it. He’s a perfect goodboi! Thank you @vet4petsusa for the awesome attention and care to Sabina and Cosmos today. Sabina got an old lady wellness check with bloodwork (which all came back normal), her nails done, and a physical exam. Cosmos got his nails done, a physical, and an in depth look into the mobile vet’s strange truck. As far as Cosmos is concerned, he’s had the best day ever!

#HurricaneIan photo dump! Happy to report that we were able to reach Sabina and Cosmos grandparents today. Our power is still out at home and expected to be for a while. Thankfully, it’s cool outside (60-80’s F). We are under a boil water advisory. The flooding was rough just after the storm (this coming from a Florida native having been through my fair share of hurricanes). It didn’t come inside the house and was touch and go for a bit. However, the flooding is gone in our area. Woohoo! If there’s something to be learned about natural disasters…despite the fear and sadness that can accompany a storm like this, it’s the strength in our fellow humans that must be recognized. We are stronger than we know and the sense of community is humbling. My heart goes out to those in Ft. Myers as they come back to a very different life after Hurricane Ian. Will keep everyone posted as best we can and we have SUPER exciting space things coming up next week. Stay tuned…

✨ Cosmos went for a mini adventure this morning to see a couple of the oldest trees in the world! 🌳Big Tree Park is named because it’s home to one of the oldest and largest cypress trees in America. The tree, The Senator, is estimated to be about 3,500 years old making it the 5th oldest tree in the world. In 2012 the tree unfortunately caught fire. At the time it was 125 feet (38m) tall. 🌳As a nod to its legacy, Lady Liberty, a companion tree stands about 40 feet (12m) away from The Senator. It too, is a bald cypress tree, that is estimated to be 2,000 years old and is another one of the oldest trees in the world. Also, is it me or does C look like a cartoon came to life?!

As soon as the Board approves the paperwork, I’ll be able to take on interns to welcome the next generation of therapists into the profession. This has been a goal since I was a Master’s student. Nine years later, on the anniversary of opening my practice, here we are. “A Freudian slip is when you say one thing and mean your mother.” But enough about me. Therapist Anubis is here to remind us that we all feel happy, sad, scared, disgust, and angry at times. It’s something that connects every single human being. Let’s take a moment to normalize this. We can all experience these emotions differently, but where there’s understanding of this, there’s empathy and connection. So, why do we feel these emotions? We feel: ☹️Sadness because we feel we are losing something or have lost something. We also feel sadness when we want/need to connect to others in a meaningful way. (For example, when mudder is 39 seconds late to feed dinner. The struggle is real.) 😬Scared when we need to escape a situation either a real threat or a perceived one. Think “Junk” anxiety vs. “Real” anxiety (More on this in a future post, but this is the snowballing racing thoughts versus being chased in the woods by an angry grizzly bear because you thought her cubs were adorable and needed a hug.) 🤢Disgust when we want to avoid something unpleasant. (Self explanatory: drinking orange juice after brushing your teeth, either literally or metaphorically. When you know, you know.) 😡Angry when we see/feel a sense of unfairness or in an attempt to self-protect. (A variant of protecc and attacc. Can sound similar to a “boof''or “bork.”) 😁Joy when we feel satisfaction and at peace with our situation or headspace. (Mudder hits that magic spot behind the ear which leads to grunts of love, eyeball squinting, and melting.) Although we might often want to escape feeling from one or more of these emotions, it’s helpful to remember why they exist in our lives. Today I challenge you to pause for a few minutes and check in with yourself. Take a deep breath, and remember to connect with yourself. You are an awesome human being capable of incredible things.

Anubis was the best co-therapist anyone could ask for (obviously….Look at his ears). While he didn’t quite make the cut to be a therapy dog in a traditional sense (he was all up in everyone’s business lol), he helped people with goal setting. And here’s how. One post, one day at a time, one smile, one laugh, all add up over time. Without realizing it, he helped make small daily goals become a huge achievement. In a clinical sense: ✔️short term goals help with minimizing procrastination ✔️they help create an achievable clear path to success ✔️setting small goals helps keep you motivated and focused ✔️over time the small goals add up and make achieving your long-term goals a reality. “Every sunset brings the promise of a new dawn.” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson It’s taken me a couple of weeks to put this together, but here we go. Anubis, the beacon of light in the night sky. The spark of joy for so many. To show him to the world, is something I’m not sure I deserve. The levels of humility that my perfect little guy gave me daily were otherworldly. He embodied the best in the world, joy, elation, love, sensitivity, compassion, genuine happiness, curiosity, and humor. He’s touched every aspect of my life with depth that even I’ll never comprehend. He was my sidekick in my practice. He was my fuel for connection with other people around the world. He’s paved the way for me to find enough courage to pursue space endeavors. He was my best friend, my son, my everything. It seems ridiculous to look to a dog as a mentor, but he was. He personified characteristics I can only dream of emulating. He was animated and brought a smile to whomever met him, if even through a photograph. His final couple of weeks taught me to worry enough to resolve what you can resolve. Then act as best you can to resolve it. Leave the rest for life to figure out. Worrying beyond what you can act on, will serve you no purpose other than to make sitting in the discomfort harder than it already is. Work on your supports ahead of time, regularly, with intention, and with love. And be the compassionate support for others in their time of need. By doing this, you will see the best in humanity. Difficult decisions come with a seemingly limitless pool of ups and downs. The unknowns often don’t seem fair and are the most challenging moments in life. This is what makes them difficult decisions. My son. My life. An “oops” puppy, brought to the adoption kennel in a cardboard box with his 5 brothers. He showed me how to love someone unconditionally from the day they are born to the day they leave us on Earth. For that I am the luckiest person alive. As his namesake suggests, he is the god of the afterlife, and his legacy is only just beginning. He was destined to never see the light of day, and every day he is my light. From now until the rest of my life, I love you son.

Anubis update: Just got a chance to visit with BionicBoi and minus a couple blood measures, he’s doing great. Using the leg as expected. As you can see he’s got smol bits of happies, kisses, and perked up a little when asked if he wanted to go on “Avenchurs.” Still in awe at the medical care he’s receiving, and the UF Vet Med hospital is incredible. Thank you to Dr. De Moya, Adam, and everyone else working on his case that we haven’t met. Noob will be staying a bit longer to rest and heal. Will keep you posted on his progress. ❤️
As many of you already know, Anubis broke his femur on Sunday afternoon. We have no idea exactly what happened, but I saw him struggling to stand up after what I guess was a fall. He was completely unable to use his leg, so he was immediately taken to a local ER vet nearby. The radiographs confirmed a broken femur. The break was a clean transverse break, with no signs of visible pathology. Chest radiographs were also taken and no tumors were seen. We had a decision on what to do, so off to the University of Florida we went that evening. We got a second opinion with the same things confirmed. It was decided that Anubis would have the best chance for recovery with a plate fusing together the broken ends of the femur. He’s been in their ER since Sunday night. He’s currently in surgery to get his femur plated. The vet will determine if there is any pathology (particularly osteosarcoma) visible, a biopsy will be taken (to further rule out osteo), and he’ll be bionic in a couple hours, assuming all goes according to plan. Words can’t describe the outpouring of love and support we’ve received during this roller coaster of a couple days. We’re doing everything possible to make sure Anubis can stay as comfortable and pain-free as possible. Couldn’t have done any of this without my champions of support, my mom, dad, and fiancé. A ginormous thank you to Tiffany (@tiffefoster) and Staci (@maziebullitt) for creating a GoFundMe for Anubis. Still don’t know how I got this lucky to have friends like you two….oh right, Anubis.
