I often talk about how women's circles give us a safe space to tell our stories. And I think it's really important that we know how powerful our own experience can be when it is shared. Every single circle I have sat in, whether holding space or being held, has shown me that stories are how we grow, they're how we find compassion and humanity, they enrich our world with layers of meaning and understanding, they really are an exchange - an offering from one woman to another, without apology or fear of judgement, simply the gift of sharing your life with others, and allowing the rich tapestry of human experience to weave and knit itself together in a multitude of colours and shapes. Sharing stories has expanded my world, and my understanding of myself, in so many ways. When we listen to the stories of other women, really listen, without needing to reply or offer comment or advice or have an answer, we give that story space to find its way to wherever it needs to be. And it always finds its way. It is so often the stories from the women whose experiences are so different from my own that seem to strike a chord or offer up a question I didn't even know I needed to ask. Stories are how we learn, how we pass down our history, how we share our wisdom and experience, and also our pain and fear and sadness. They are how we celebrate the good things and make space for the hard things. They are how we show our love, they are how we offer a bit of the unique magic of ourselves to the women we sit with. Stories are something no-one can take away from us, they are fluid and beautifully mercurial, they are rooted in our sense of self, and yet also in all our questions and confusion. They change with the telling, but often that is exactly the point. We have to keep telling our stories. Unlike Summertime and Cars & Girls ( our previous books ) , we prepared our shoots for our Broken Dreams & Hollywood Endings project. Summertime & C&G was reportage photography.. We usually start from a location, fill it in with a theme, check a number of ideas and fill in with styling and props. And of course key player the model. In the meantime, we know that there are always a number of coincidences on a shoot, things that we had not seen. Here is one of those. I never thought in advance that I was going to take a photo with the cactus as a setting. This came our way during the Castigno shoot. A synergy between model Sevgi, the location and the moment. For Sevgi, this was her first shoot as a model, and an artistic work as a first shoot. I am so happy that we received the trust of Sevgi, whom we have photographed several times in the mean time, also for commissioned work. Inspired by ancient Mandalas and African weaving, my concept threads hidden (site-responsive) poems to create resilient inner-structures. Thank you to everyone who wrote and collaborated on this piece!! “The Woven Bow” I wanted to take this strong sense of feminity that comes with archery and juxtapose it with the lack of respect that revolves around fiber art. The weaving community has received much resistance to be considered an art even going as far as pushing women to distance themselves from the practice to be taken seriously. Encompassing the ideas of feminine practice as being weaker, we can see two very different practices throughout history that in someways run parallel to one another in terms of the development of a gender based identity. The red in a lot of my works represents the pain felt by the female population in a variety of ways, in this work its attempting to show the effort and pain that has gone into developing this culturally significant respect surrounding archery and the lack of respect in weaving. I wanted to tell the individual story by weaving strips of paper telling personal tales into the piece. Recycled clothing was used to weave the base with red string woven into the structure. #sculpture #weaving #installation #collaborative #tellingstories

🏠56 Farewell Street house was NRF’s first project in the Point neighborhood. Community members and preservationists recognized that the new America’s Cup Avenue was going to change not only streetscapes but also how people entered (and left) the City, and we knew that 56 Farewell Street was now going to be one of the first homes that visitors to the City would encounter. Records indicate that 56 Farewell was known as “the large blue house” for many years, and it was likely the same house that was described as “a newly painted blue house” in a 1760 Newport Mercury article listing the house for sale. As with many homes in the Point neighborhood, by the 19th century, the house had been subdivided into apartments and became the home of many Newporters. During the restoration process, we discovered evidence of the original chimney, along with some more unusual details for a 18th-century house built in Newport. We found evidence—for example—that the early exterior had flat siding made from hand-split pine boards, rather than the more typical clapboard siding. The restoration documentation process included detailed notes and drawings of various architectural features of the building, and these— in combination with the documentation photographs— are an important resource for understanding the many architectural layers of the home. I have my fair share of those, and through the years, a few funny ones have popped up. Some of my favorites are, “Put the mouse in the fridge, will you?” (𝘰𝘰𝘱𝘴, 𝘐 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘮𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘴𝘦) and when the MC gently stokes the heroine’s arm (𝘐 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘬 𝘩𝘦’𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘰 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨). There’s also that time when the protagonist was entitled and shellfish (𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘬 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩, 𝘢𝘶𝘵𝘰-𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘵). Needless to say, I’m extremely grateful for my beta readers. As what must have been the P-8A Poseidon No 5 Squadron dipped in over the Ashley Bank cenotaph on their flight from Stewart Island to Collingwood this morning, I thought of Pte E C A Schmidt*, his death recorded on the WW2 panel of the war memorial. I recalled what little I knew of this one time resident of the Skudder House, a child's retold memory of their cousin climbing out of an upstairs bedroom window to enjoy a last night at the Ashley Hotel with mates before embarking for England and active wartime service. The child has remained nameless and ageless in my mind - until today. Graham is 92 and came with his son, Greg, for a drive-by of an old family home. The house is a mess inside but I will always show descendants of past owners inside. I am thrilled that Graham was able to make it up - and down - the steep stairs to see the room he'd slept in when visiting Granny and... to describe 'Darkie' swearing him to secrecy and getting back to his room just before his mother came to rouse him. This window was also my bedroom window and I remember my father using it for access to the roof to work on the chimney and water tank. Darkie returned home - but died soon after of pneumonia. I knew this poignant detail but I didn't know till today that his mother was also ill with pneumonia and in hospital at the same time as her son. Here is a little about us: We are a team of Career Educators who support students. ☀️When you book a session, you’ll have a free, 50 minute confidential appointment. ☀️ We’ll hear your needs, help you establish goals, and collaborate on a plan for your career development. ☀️ We are experts at meeting SFU students where they are at, whether first year or after you graduate. ☀️ We help students who are seeking direction, narrowing down possibilities or wanting to make more connections - with community, their degree, their interests or abilities. ☀️ Sessions are on a first-come, first-served (according to schedules) and phones are open 9:30am-4pm each day. ☀️ Career Educators are available at all 3 campuses and on Zoom. ✍️ Drop us a comment about any topics you’re excited or worried about - to do with your degree, related careers, ways to apply for summer work, or campus-volunteering! ☀️ Looking forward to knowing you and creating plans for your future with you.
