One of our favorite moments is the first hike with the new kids. Initially the kids huddled around Jodi but as we went on they relaxed and wandered on their own. We have decided to keep all the kids this year. They are truly a special bunch. We have never had a more affectionate group, and well, they won us over and get to live their lives with us. The sad truth is to get milk you have to breed and to be successful you just can’t keep them all usually. But this group is family and for that reason it is a good decision. Even Mick and Hank can stay, just gotta do the snip snip in a couple months. We are so excited for @steelspoonfarm to have access to their very own milk - they welcomed Dorothy & Rosemary to their family today. Both American alpines come from the same mama who has incredible genetics for milking & kidding. Dorothy is currently in milk as FF & might hit close to 1/2 a gallon of milk a day now that her buckeling has been weened. Rosemary is still a doeling & will be breed in 2025. I've see too many goats managed with inappropriate fencing, nutrition, and medical care because owners were ill-prepared for the complexity of seemingly simple creatures. I want to help you help your goats to live their very best lives. I want to help set you up for success. Kidding season was a success 🙌 I'm not going to lie. I was so nervous about kidding season. We had ten bred does who were all first freshners. We have a mixed herd of Alpines and Lamanchas. We bred them all to one Alpine Buck. He was a big guy, and we were warned he tends to throw large kids. All ten does did great. We only had to assist on two. We ended up with sixteen kids; eight bucks and eight does. Thankfully, only one buck was rejected.
