I think I finally “get” King Blue. I’ve always enjoyed it, but I’m now wrapping my head around the creativity and artistry behind it. King Blue is inspired by the surrealistic movement, and especially the painting “The Art of Living” by René Magritte. So it should be viewed as a surrealistic piece. What surprised me when I first smelled King Blue is that it was nothing like a “blue” scent, even though official descriptions of it mentioned that it is a playful rendition of the “blue” genre. Now I see that it is a rendition of a blue scent in the same way that “The Art of Living” is a rendition of the human face. It is a parody, commentary, deconstruction. Instead of fresh apple, like in many blue scents, they added a syrupy blackcurrant. Instead of bergamot, a bitter and sour mandarin. Amouage - Epic 56 So this is the next from the "Exceptional Extraits" and the heaviest concentration from them all. I do actually love the original Epic "Woman". So was this one massively different? Do I love it. It opens with a dark chewy greeness with the pink pepper and touch of that tea. You get a nice pink feel like the original from the rose and cinnamon with the frankincense quite prominent. It's almost a little fruity feeling. The oud and guiac are what comes through the most from the base. As it develops the iris and rose mix together nicely with a metallic twang from the geranium behind it. The tea and frankincense are still prominent. After an hour or so the woody notes and patchloui move up still with that very pink rose geranium iris is very similar to the original. The cinnamon adds a kind of plasticity sweetness over it too, very pleasant. Many hours into the dry down it has a nice nutty woodiness with the pinkness, the tea and a smooth sweet resinous with some gorgeous musks. This is one of the harder ones to talk about from this line. I absolutely loved this, I also absolutely love the original. I think people are also fond of the original, a pink friendly rosey one done in that Amouage way. This version obviously adds that silky smooth feel and rounds it off. If the original didn't exist I'd probably go for this, it does and it's vastly cheaper. I'm not sure what made them choose which ones to put in this line but as beautiful as the original is did it need to be some super extrait? Probably not. If I had a bottomless pit of money I'd get this of course, and I think to be honest that's what this line is. I sure there's maybe only one or two left to talk about one if I've not spoke about it, no it's pointless and the other cos I'm such a massive fan of the original, erm maybe 🙊. Have you tried this one? Is it spectacular enough that you wanna own this and the original? What's your favourite pink rosey scent.
