Theriogenology ✨ One of the courses I enjoyed this semester, Complex yet fascinating has to be Veterinary Reproduction (Theriogenology) Rectal palpation, artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis, estrous synchronization, breeding sound examination, ultrasonography and hormonal assay. I got to palpate the cervix (I was unable to reach the uterus and ovaries 🤧) I was privileged to see how artificial insemination in a cow was done and it was such a beautiful experience! From collecting the semen from the male cow using an artificial vagina and also, how the semen is preserved, stored and used for reproduction. I must say Theriogenology is one of the most versatile areas in Veterinary medicine. O Embryolab participou do dia de Campo na Gira da @renascerbiotecnologia no dia 12/04 realizada na empresa agropecuária Dom Alberto. Após os veterinários presentes (RS, SC, PR e MT) foram até a área de Tifton Irrigado sob pivô central para ver a recria das futuras matrizes (oriundas de IATF) de 12 e 24 meses. Onde o Zootecnista responsável pelo setor de pecuária da empresa @matheus_giudici apresentou o manejo empregado na recria juntamente com os proprietários @fernandoascholze e Alberto Scholze. Time to shine the spotlight on our official club advisor! “Hi, I am Dr. Mak! I am a board-certified theriogenologist and currently working as an assistant professor at LIU-CVM. I am delighted to participate in the establishment and development of the LIU Therio Club. Theriogenologists are veterinarians who specialize in the reproductive systems of animals, and our profession helps bring life into the world! I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I discovered my interest in theriogenology when I was doing an externship on a dairy farm in Taiwan. And of course, I became overwhelmed by joy when I successfully pulled out a calf from a cow with dystocia, and decided to pick theriogenology (or theriogenology picked me) as my profession. After spending years in Taiwan for my vet school and multiple states in the US for my advanced training, I decided to relocate to another cosmopolitan city on Earth, New York! My clinical and research interests include reproductive pathology, pharmacological control of reproduction, and assisted reproductive technologies across different species. My suggestion to our students is: Come join our events or workshops whenever you have a chance! Being a person who spent most of my childhood in a city, I have never imagined being a theriogenologist and palpating cows and horses!”

The mare is long-day seasonal polyestrous, so she cycles during spring and summer. When days become longer, there are longer periods of light, resulting in a decreased production of melatonin by the pineal gland. The melatonin is the hormone of darkness, being produced in greater quantities during shorter day periods. High amounts of melatonin block the mare's entire reproductive cycle by inhibiting the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The light stimulus reaches the mare's ocular receptors. Then the hypothalamus releases GnRH, and the pituitary gland releases FSH and LH. Last week Dr Morné de la Rey from @rhino_repro, a leading vet in the field of animal reproduction came to Namibia again! A few months ago, he examined and treated several rhino cows here that have never calved. Now was the time to do a follow-up, and examine some new rhinos. We break it down in three posts, with today #3: Namibian rhino bull. As you could read yesterday, two rhino cows on a farm did not have calves yet. The one was still quite young, but the other cow was of such an age that she should have had calves already. She was treated, but now it was important to also examine the rhino bull, and make sure he is fertile. The bull was immobilized, and a specially made electro-ejaculation probe was inserted rectally to stimulate ejaculation. Sperm was collected, and was immediately checked under the microscope. The sperm looked great, so that means the bull is fertile! We hope that the cow will come on heat soon, and will be mated by the bull. Rhinos have a long gestation period of about 16 months. Depending on how things go, we might check the cow in a few months’ time again to see if she is pregnant. We had a great and interesting time! We would like to thank Dr de la Rey and his assistant Carla Herbst for their time and work done, Dr HO for joining us, and of course the rhino owners for their trust in these services! Recently Dr Morné de la Rey @rhino_repro, a leading vet in the field of animal reproduction came to Namibia again! A few months ago, he examined and treated several rhino cows here that have never calved. Now was the time to do a follow-up, and examine some new rhinos. We break it down in three posts, with today #2: Namibian rhino cows. Sometimes a rhino cow does not come into a proper hormone cycle, and will not get pregnant. Dr de la Rey and his assistant Carla first check if the rhino is pregnant. If not, they start a procedure called Ovum Pick-Up (OPU). Throughout the ovaries follicles are present; sacs in where the eggs (ova) develop and mature. With a special ultrasound probe with needles, the follicles are located and flushed, this basically ‘resets’ the ovaries and the hormones they produce. The ovaries are downregulated, resulting in a subsequent hormone flush. The cow should come on heat and will have (depending on the condition of the uterus) a good chance of becoming pregnant. This follow-up visit was to check if the rhino cows that were treated a few months ago were pregnant, and to examine ‘new’ rhinos. On the one farm where we treated a cow before, it was observed that a bull mated her, so she did not get a follow-up examination. We keep our fingers crossed that she will get pregnant! On the other farm Dr de la Rey examined the rhino cow we did before, and another cow. The one cow was pregnant! The rhino cow we treated before was not pregnant yet, but her uterus was in great condition, her ovaries were full of follicles and it was decided not to treat her again, as she should become pregnant hopefully soon. On the last farm were two rhino cows that have never had calves before. The one was still quite young, but the 2nd cow was immobilized and checked for pregnancy. Unfortunately she was not, and the OPU procedure was done on her. Now that the cow was treated, we also checked the rhino bull to see if he is fertile. Read more about that tomorrow!

Since rhino reproduction is not an easy topic, we will break it down in three posts, with today #1: Intro to Rhino Reproduction. In 2017 Dr de la Rey founded Rhino Repro, a non-profit organization aiming to ensure the survival of the white and black rhino by assisting the species with ground-breaking Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART). These techniques involve the manipulation of sperm, eggs (ova) and embryos in vitro (in the lab, literal meaning ‘in the glass’) with the goal of producing a pregnancy. These techniques might raise some questions – should we not let nature take its course? Normally we would say yes, nature should do its own thing. However, due to ongoing pressure on nature and wildlife (e.g., poaching, habitat loss) many species are driven towards extinction. When population numbers are declining, genetic diversity becomes a major problem. ART’s can be used to boost population numbers and ensure genetic diversity within species, thus playing an important role in the conservation of endangered species. The rhino is a prominent example as numbers are declining due to poaching, and subsequently, due to the risk of being poached, many reserves and farms do not want rhinos anymore. This decreases their possible habitat tremendously. Before it is too late to save a species, it is important that the Assisted Reproductive Techniques, together with biobanks, are perfected before it is too late.
