As someone who started my plant-based journey for environmental reasons and later became vegan due to my concern for animal welfare, I understand the importance of distinguishing between these two approaches. While they share some common goals, their motivations are distinct and worth acknowledging. The impact of animal agriculture on the environment cannot be overstated. From deforestation to ocean dead zones and water pollution, the resources required to raise and slaughter animals for human consumption are taking a devastating toll on our planet. By choosing plant-based options, we can reduce our carbon footprint, preserve valuable ecosystems, and promote biodiversity. For those who don't prioritize animal welfare, the environmental benefits alone are reason enough to consider a plant-based diet. And for those who do care about animals, veganism offers a more holistic approach to living in alignment with our values. I see posts like this going around quite a bit. While there is something positive about telling people to stop eating animals for the environment. If it isn't for animals it isn't vegan. If you stop eating and consuming animals of course you will have a way lower impact on animals and the environment. And that is awesome. But veganism is not just about what you eat. It's also about not buying clothing that have parts of animals in them, not going to zoos, rodeos or any other animal exploitation that we can avoid as far as possible.

Nearly all of them are intensively raised on factory farms, out of sight and unrecognised as the source of so much of the food we consume. These factory farms are terrible for animal welfare, the environment, workers rights and human health, and yet we continue to allow them to exist and expand in Ireland. The EPA reports that Ireland’s agriculture sector was directly responsible for 38.4% of our GHG emissions in 2022, mainly methane from farm animals, nitrogen fertiliser and manure management. Animal farming also presents serious risks for antibiotic resistance and the transmission of zoonotic diseases such as Covid19. Less than one week after the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in unpasteurized milk from dairy cattle in some areas of the United States, the BC government announced a new dairy subsidy, to a tune of $25 million dollars. The government is contributing up to $25 million toward the expansion of a milk production plant aimed at boosting the supply of locally-sourced food. Construction at Vitalus Nutrition’s plant in Abbotsford begins this summer, and will increase local milk production by 50 per cent, to 1.4 billion litres annually, and hopes to contribute to B.C.’s new industrial development blueprint, clean energy and sustainable industries. The USDA’s announcement indicated that the infection most likely came from wild birds. HPAI has not been detected in dairy cattle or other livestock in Canada yet, per the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The CFIA was prompt to appease consumers that pasteurization ensures milk is “safe”, and there is no evidence to suggest that eating thoroughly cooked beef could transmit avian influenza to humans. All evidence to date indicates that thorough cooking will kill the virus, the CFIA states, omitting the convenient fact that is ever present: this is the first time avian flu has been contracted by dairy cows. The evidence to date cannot attempt to account for this, because it has never existed before. On April 11, we released the results of our comprehensive investigation into @alexandre_farm, through which we found systemic animal abuse and likely violations of several certification standards. Male calves in the dairy industry are slaughtered for meat and sold as veal. 😢 Calves in the dairy and veal industries are commonly forced to live alone in tiny hutches for their first 8 weeks of life or even longer, depending on the type of farm. In addition, they are subject to painful procedures such as disbudding, dehorning, and castration.
