A while back, we had the pleasure of a group of late teens/early 20 year olds come through the booths. They were so fascinated by the early pieces, especially the industrial and medical items. Uroscopy, the historic medical practice of looking at urine, was a popular technique for Tudor and Jacobean physicians (doctors). However, the idea of urine being used to find out what was wrong with you, is much older, dating back to the Ancient Greeks. The design of this urine flask is thought to have been introduced by Gilles de Corbeil, royal physician to King Philippe-Auguste of France, in the 12th Century. We know that might not seem as interesting to some of our uranium collectors, but this is still a great piece that will glow under a 365 UV black light! On top of that gorgeous glow, it also happens be an antique druggist Whitall-Tatum Company jar. Certain antique bottle collectors prize Tatum pieces, this is partly due to Tatum being one of the first glass factories in the U.S. Tatum produced reagent bottles, jars, perfume bottles, chemical bottles, and plenty more over the years! This particular container is marked UNG. SULPHURIS, and it most likely contained a mixture of sulfur or sulfurous compounds. A druggist would mix this material with other powders or chemicals to create the required compound. Make sure to stop in and check out this great piece of medical history. Store is open 12-6pm!

FOR SALE (750 euro): A very rare French mechanical trepanning brace, all iron and ebony handle, from the second half of the 1800’s. In very good condition (I can only notice some spots of superficial oxidation and the missing inner point of the trephine), in working condition, signed “Mathieu a Paris”. Length is 26,5 cm. “A trepanning brace was used to drill a hole in the skull of a living person. Trepanning was used to treat a range of ailments from headaches to epilepsy, and the practice of creating holes in the living human skull dates back to ancient history (the oldest discovered skulls showing evidence of trepanation date back to the Mesolithic period — around 6000 B.C.) Medical historians refer to the 18th century as the “trepan century.” This is because at that time, European surgeons became particularly interested in the possible uses of this practice. Throughout the century, doctors used trepanation to treat concussions and brain inflammation. By the end of the 1700s, however, opinions in the medical community were divided as to whether this procedure was useful or harmful. In the 19th century, trepanation rose and fell from medical favor, though trepanations were particularly popular during the American Civil War period (1861–1865).
