For our final week of Women's History Month, we want to take a moment to highlight an incredibly inspiring woman who made a significant impact during World War II - Andrée de Jongh. Andrée de Jongh was a Belgian nurse and resistance fighter who is best known for her role in helping Allied soldiers escape from occupied Europe during World War II. At the age of 24, she founded the Comet Line, a network that helped more than 800 people escape from Nazi-occupied territory to safety. Andrée’s story also has a fun and interesting fact - she was known as the “Little Cyclone” due to her small stature and fierce personality. Despite her petite frame, she was a force to be reckoned with and played a major role in the success of the Comet Line. Not only did she risk her life to save others, but she also showed incredible resilience and determination in the face of adversity. Despite being arrested and interrogated multiple times, she never revealed any information about her network or the people she helped. In addition to her heroic acts, Andrée de Jongh achieved many other accomplishments. She was awarded the Croix de Guerre for her bravery and was also named a Member of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. Andrée de Jongh’s bravery, selflessness, and determination make her a true hero and an inspiration to women all around the world. As we continue to celebrate Women's History Month, we want to take a moment to honor a trailblazing woman whose determination and courage have left a lasting impact on the world of mountaineering - Junko Tabei. Junko is best known for being the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world. But her achievements go far beyond this one remarkable feat. Despite facing societal barriers and gender stereotypes, Tabei was determined to pursue her passion for climbing. She founded the Ladies Climbing Club in 1969, which aimed to empower women and promote their participation in mountaineering. Through this club, she inspired many women to challenge themselves and reach new heights. In addition to conquering Everest, Tabei also became the first woman to climb the Seven Summits, the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. She also holds the record for being the oldest woman to summit Everest at the age of 53. But perhaps one of the most interesting facts about Tabei is that she was also an accomplished educator. She graduated from Showa Women's University with a degree in English literature and taught at a high school for several years before pursuing mountaineering full-time. She even continued to teach while simultaneously breaking records and pushing boundaries in the climbing world. Tabei's story is a reminder that with determination, passion, and hard work, anything is possible. Today, we honor Bayard Rustin, a civil rights leader and activist who played a crucial role in the fight for equality and justice. As a gay black man in the 1950s and 1960s, Rustin faced discrimination and challenges, but he never let that stop him from fighting for what he believed in. Born in Pennsylvania in 1912, Rustin dedicated his life to nonviolent activism. He was a key strategist and organizer of the Civil Rights Movement, working closely with Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders. He was the mastermind behind the historic March on Washington, where King delivered his iconic "I Have a Dream" speech. Despite facing backlash and opposition, Rustin remained committed to nonviolent activism and was a strong vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. He was open about his identity as a gay man at a time when it was extremely risky to do so. He once said, "We need, in every community, a group of angelic troublemakers." Alice was the first black woman to win an Olympic gold medal, breaking barriers and inspiring generations to come. Born in Albany, Georgia in 1923, Alice faced numerous challenges as a black athlete during a time of racial segregation. Despite these obstacles, she went on to become a star track and field athlete, setting records in high jump and winning multiple national championships. Alice's determination and talent led her to the 1948 Olympics in London, where she became the first black woman to win a gold medal in the high jump.
