Rhamnus cathartica, or common buckthorn, is an invasive tree found in a variety of habitats throughout North America. The species was introduced here as an ornamental tree due to its shiny, leathery leaves and beautiful black-blue fruits. Common buckthorn now outcompetes native plants due to its longer growing season, dense shade, and chemical alterations to the environment. Common buckthorn, identifiable by its fruit, flower, and leaves, is greenish yellow in color with four-petaled flowers that grow along the stem. The fruit ripens from green to blue-black throughout the growing season and remains on the plant into winter while its leaves are football-shaped, glossy, with curved veins. If you have common buckthorn or other invasive plant species in your yard, now is your chance to replace it with a native plant, free of charge! CRWP is partnering with the City of Eastlake to host a native plant swap with funding from the Western Reserve Land Conservancy Dominion Energy Mini-Grant Program. All you need to do is remove an invasive plant from your property and upload a photo of the removed plant to our sign-up form. Calling all green thumbs and budding (har har) green thumbs! There’s a darling new Free Tiny Greenhouse in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood. Installed in February but officially opened for exchanges yesterday, you can find @tinygreenhouseBD near SE 69th Ave and SE Harney Street. Micky Matthews, creator and curator of the Tiny Greenhouse, told me she was inspired to create this community offering after happening upon @tinygreenhousefopo last fall. Cleverly built using salvaged windows from @rebuildingcenter and adorned with paint that matches her home, this plant library is bright and fun and already filled with a wide variety of leafy friends. Micky says like many folks, she really got into houseplants during the pandemic. The bit of nature inside as well as the gardening community both helped stave away some of the quarantine loneliness. She hopes this plant exchange ‘helps to foster a sense of community and connection among neighbors and fellow gardeners and provides opportunities for people to interact, exchange gardening tips, and build relationships.” In the cold months, Micky plans on using the space for a little free pantry. Micky would love to see the plants living their best lives in their homes so don’t hesitate to share pictures if you adopt one and/or bring back cuttings to pay it forward.
