🏴 The nursery web spider (Pisaura mirabilis) is a common spider of grassland and scrub, and is often seen sunbathing among brambles and stinging nettles. The adults are active hunters and do not spin a web to catch food, instead using a quick sprint to capture flies and other insects. This fine looking male was spotted at @rspb Cors Ddyga reserve. Mating is a dangerous game for male nursery web spiders, so they present a gift of food to the female while laying perfectly still and pretending to be dead. Thin-spined Jumping Spider (Tutelina elegans) I rarely see males of this species, but every summer for a week or two I have a chance to see them out looking for a mate. They have some really cool seta, with fluffy forearms and two spikes on their head. They also have an incredibly colorful tip of their abdomen that seems to vary a bit in color between individuals. Western Lynx Spider (Oxyopes scalaris) I'm very far behind on posting... this shot is from March of 2022 haha. This is the first Lynx Spider I ever found, measuring maybe 3mm. Over the last 2 years, they have become one of my favorite subjects to photograph, but are very hard to find in my area. Since this shot I've been lucky enough to see 6 more individuals. The juveniles like this one show up surprisingly early in the year, even with snow still on the ground. They are also incredibly fast and skittish, making them really hard to photograph. It doesn't help that they literally have eyes in the back of their heads😅. Dark Fishing Spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus) These large spiders are always one of my favorite subjects. They usually trust their camouflage and stay still for stacks, which is not the case for most subjects, haha. This 48 frame portrait stack really shows off all the awesome patterning this species has. Over last summer, I really started noticing just how much variability arachnids have within their species. This spider has much brighter white than most Dark Fishing Spiders, making for some really nice contrast. It's been really fun finding the "prettiest" and most unique individuals of different species. Triangle Weaver (Hyptiotes cavatus) This tiny weaver has one of the most unique hunting methods of any spider I've seen. Unlike a typical orb weaver who spin a circular web and wait in the center for prey, these spiders spin only a small slice of that web and use it very differently. Their web consists of a triangle that is then attached by a thread of silk to the spider, who is also holding an anchor thread, attached to a nearby object. They then pull the web as taught as possible, and when prey is detected, they let go of their anchor. This sends the spider and the web lunging forward like a slingshot, further wrapping up the prey. The spider then reels in their web along with their meal. I've included a diagram of this behavior from bioone.org as my written description may be hard to follow. The individual in my photo seems to have recently caught food, so its web was not intact. You can, however, still see its main web line and anchor line that it's holding as it eats. If anyone knows more about these impressive spiders, please let me know if I missed anything in my description! Orb Weaver (Araneus iviei) The colors in this picture were absolutely AWFUL to edit, and I'm still not 100% happy with these final results. I do think I've stared at it too long and don't think I'll be able to get it much better, so here we are! Finding this fairly uncommon and sparsely populated spider was super lucky. As I walked by, it darted out of its leaf hide, grabbing a tree hopper nymph out of its very small tucked away web, and ran straight back to its leaf. Many oprb weavers fold a leaf into a cone to hide in, and if this one hadn't left its hiding spot right when I walked by, I never would've spotted her. 🏴 This European garden spider may look big, but was less than a centimetre at its longest, suggesting that it might be a male. Having sneaked into the house to avoid the worst of the winter weather, he turned out to be a very patient model, allowing me to attempt focus bracketing for the first time. The garden spider is well known for its impressive web. Spider silk is amazingly lightweight: a strand of silk long enough to go all the way around the Earth would weigh less than 500 grams - that's the same as a bag of sugar! Hammer-jawed Jumping Spider ♀️(Zygoballus rufipes) One of the less common species I've found, both due to their tiny size, unique habitat, and sparse population. I didn't find any this past year, but in 2022 I found around 5 in an old growth growth forest, all on undergrowth about 6 inches or 15cm above the ground. At maybe 4mm, this females a decent amount larger than the males I've found who ill share in a future post. 🏴 Money spiders belong to the second largest family of spiders, the Linyphiidae, which consists of approximately 4706 species worldwide. Around 2mm long, the money spider is one of the smallest spiders found in the UK. Also known as sheet weavers in many parts of the world, these tiny little creatures are known to build large webs for catching prey which resembles silk sheets, hence their name. Also, for the superstitious among us, money spiders are thought to bring new wealth, hence their other more common name. Superstition would have it that if a money spider is found crawling on you or in your hair, it’s likely to spin you new clothes, hence the association with new money. 🏴 Snake-back spiders (Segestria senoculata) get their name from the row of dark coloured patches on their elongated abdomen, which resemble the markings on some poisonous snakes, such as the adder. These spiders are always arranged with six legs pointing forwards and the back pair pointing rearward. Snake-back spiders frequently make their webs in holes in walls. They leave trip wires radiating out from the edge of the hole whilst the spider sits inside the cavity with its front legs just visible at the entrance. Cornfield Bolas Spider (Mastophora hutchinsoni) Check out @kbmacroart 's shots of this stunning spider too! Of all the species on my bucket list, I didn't expect to see this one any time soon. Ken has somehow found a population of these incredibly cryptic and uncommon spiders. When he told me he found a female on her eggsac, I knew I had to make the hour drive out and try to see her. Unfortunately, I had to wait until the next day and hope that the rainy night ahead wouldn't cause the spider to move. The following morning Ken confirmed she was still resting on the same plant, and he left me a trail of markers to follow into the forest to find her. Seeing her, resting on a raspberry plant, just a few leaves down from her eggsac made the drive more than worth it. I spent over an hour getting stacks from every angle I could. The angles were incredibly awkward but with alot of patience and failed attempts I was able to get some shots I really like. I always love when a subject trusts their camouflage, because she barely moved at all during the entire encounter. I can see why though, I would never think I'm looking at a spider just seeing one placed on a leaf. I have plenty of images for more posts on this spider, so I'll touch on some of their incredible behaviors in the captions then. Dark Fishing Spider (Dolomedes tenebrosus) Hello again! Haven't posted in a bit, but have been doing more photography than ever! In my break, I visited Toronto and met up with some great macro people. This fishing spider is from an outing I took with @photon.polyphemus, @alexmckphotography, @xanadu.macro, and @peterinwoods. Finding this scene with the egg sack has always been a bucketlist shot for me, and the Ontario guys stacking tendencies really rubbed off on me😅 both shots are 40+ frame stacks. Always awesome getting out with all these guys! In between macro outings, it was fun to explore the city with my wife and brothers, I've never felt so safe in a downtown at 2am. Was fun to try some city photography, and I figured why not show some of those shots in this post.
