Lovely Motherā€™s day ride! Started with the girls (Wifey & Xyla) but they headed home early to release the puppy from his prison before he had an accident. I continued on to the Serenity Falls Hut turn off to get a good trail recon ahead of the GRIT campout next weekend!! Trail was overall good. I forgot my saw and there were quite a few downed trees, most I can clear by hand but one really big one will require a chainsaw to clear out. Lots of puddles, washouts worse than last year but still passable for now. Trail was completely snow free to 10-11mi and deeper hike-a-bike as you turn the corner before the hut split. Way better than last year but still hoping some sunny days take care of that for us too! #bikelife #adventurebybike #alaskabybike #lakelife #spring #mtbgirl #mtblife #dirtlife #aroundalaska #naturalalaska

Morning ride with the wife out at Kin Winn! Little windy but kept the bugs down so who were we to complain? Took the whole pack of pups for a Mirror Lake walk and did some trail recon: rut and boot print repairs along the way and stomped down some soft frost heave spots. Still a long way from being ready- please respect the trail closures! CMBR trail work this weekend to help get them ready but still a couple weeks out if we can get some good warm weather. #bikelife #adventurebybike #alaskalife #aroundalaska #alaskadog #adventurepup #adventuredog #xyladog #indyjodog #pyropup

A big community cleanup is planned for this weekend at one of the most used recreation areas in Mat-Su. Along with the borough, the Alaska Extreme Fourwheelers will host the 21st annual cleanup at Jim Creek this Saturday at 10 a.m. Borough officials say over the years, this event has done so much to improve the image of Jim Creek. The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium has appointed an interim president and CEO. Natasha Singh has been serving as the organization's executive vice president. The consortium announced that its former leader has "transitioned out" of her role after three years. Sitka is playing host to a Southeast Alaska Tribal Ocean Research workshop this week. Staff from Tlingit and Haida are attending along with tribal partners from across the region. Photos show participants learning how to survey beaches for European Green Crabs -- an invasive species that's been documented in Metlakatla. A young bald eagle from Kodiak needed a bath after getting itself covered in fish slime. The Bird Treatment and Learning Center posted this video to social media. Officials say all the slime prevented the eagle from being able to fly. Thanks to the team here for getting him all cleaned up. And finally, it was an all-school affair at Mountain View Elementary in Anchorage. The Mustangs recently hosted an event featuring performances and other nods to Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage, which is celebrated and recognized during May. #AroundAlaska #CommunityCleanup #MatSu #JimCreekCleanup #AlaskaExtremeFourwheelers #BoroughPride #AlaskaNativeHealth #LeadershipTransition #NatashaSingh #TribalOceanResearch #SoutheastAlaska #GreenCrabSurvey #InvasiveSpecies #EagleRescue #BirdRehabilitation #CulturalHeritageCelebration

Today Moms took me on a hike! And explored in something they called a bike park? There were lots of weird bumps I got to run up then down, they were really proud of how well I did on the teeter totter (I didnā€™t think it was any big deal) and the narrow boardwalks. I loved running with my sister Xyla and brother Indy! Xyla is so fast, I want to run with her but mom said I had to stay on a leash (boring). Indy looked like he was having so much fun in all the puddles but mom wouldnā€™t let me go play in them either. Guess it is a big dog thing. #puppylife #dutchshepherd #delasfloresdogs #adventurepup #adventuredog #doglife #alaskadog #aroundalaska #explorealaska #traildog

Tlingit & Haida shared photos on the tribe's Facebook page thanking everyone who came out. Plenty of people showed up to stand together in solidarity on the Capitol steps. The demonstrators wanted everyone to know that their relatives, whose lives have been cut short, deserve to be more than just statistics. Also in Juneau, the annual "blessing of the fleet" was held over the weekend at Alaska's Commercial Fishermen's Memorial. It's a tradition that happens each year at 10 a.m. on the first Saturday in May. The memorial is dedicated to those who have given their lives to our state's commercial fishing industry. According to the Juneau Empire, six new names will be added this summer. The City of Fairbanks is looking forward to future visits from members of the Italian Air Force. For the past few weeks, military personnel from Italy have been taking part in Red Flag Alaska 24-1 at Eielson Air Force Base. This weekend was a big @anchorage_grit weekend!! Saturday was a big ride for the girls and they logged over 20 miles! We biked over to check in with the City Wide Clean up and get our bags to collect trash. Westchester Lagoon was very clean so we decided to go hit up Lyn Ary Park but that was also trash free. Tooled along Coastal trail for a little more but, everything had been picked up! Met up with our pizza delivery back at Lyn Ary park then headed back North via Ship Creek Trail to see if Polar Bear Park needed some help but, it had also already been picked up that morning! So, we had ice cream and headed back to school. Amazing that so many people were out picking up the community today! Never struggled so hard to find trash! Today was the Bike For Women race and GRIT hosted a table to help raise funding for next yearā€™s program. So many amazing women from all walks of life made it out for the event and loved chatting with this fantastic community we have! #grit #girlsgotgrit #anchoragegrit #bikealaska #bikeanchorage #bikelife #adventurebybike #aroundalaska #bikeqithpizza #creativebikerigging

Work is underway to replace the Bear Creek Bridge along the Richardson Highway. It was back in 2022 when torrential downpours washed out the Bear Creek Bridge forcing the state to close part of the Richardson Highway. Fast forward two years, crews are working to replace that bridge and they're making progress. Work is expected to continue through 2026. It's said to be the largest seismology conference in our nation. The annual National Meeting of the Seismological Society of America happening in Anchorage. Scientists and researchers will be talking about earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, volcanoes and more through Friday at the Dena'ina Center. Quite a turnout for Drug Take Back Day in Mat-Su. The borough says 10 boxes full of unwanted or unused medications were collected at the Wasilla Fred Meyer location alone. The next DEA Drug Take Back event is planned for October across Alaska and the rest of the nation. A recent Herring Roe on Kelp distribution in Sitka was a big success. Tlingit & Haida hosted the event for tribal citizens here at Crescent Harbor Pavilion. Tribe leaders shared these photos on Facebook, saying in all, 342 boxes were given out here in Sitka. And it sure looked like a beautiful day to celebrate springtime at Creamer's Field in Fairbanks. A spring migration celebration was held at Creamer's Field, featuring the "parade of swallows." Folks were also able to learn about birds of prey and even meet some local falconers and their birds. #BearCreekBridge #RichardsonHighway #SeismologyConference #AnchorageMeeting #DrugTakeBack #MatSu #HerringRoe #SitkaEvent #SpringMigration #CreamersFieldCelebration #AroundAlaska

Sunny Sunday out on Moose Range! Ran into Carlene and Pat and joined them for the rest of the ride. Conditions couldnā€™t have been better! Well.. except the swamp.. that was pretty sketchy and for sure would not have done it solo but, fearless Pat lead the way and we all made it through dry. Not sure how much longer Moose Range will last with this sunshine and 50F temps but I am enjoying while I can! 53 as I left the trail at 11am, still ridable but getting softer. ā€œThat one bridgeā€ (you know what I mean) is pretty much out. And so are the bears! Huge pile of bear scat and early morning prints down the trail towards said bridge. Luckily no other wildlife though, Indy barked at something and we moved on quickly with lots of over the shoulder glances to make sure we didnā€™t have an extra friend. #springbiking #fatbike #fatbiking #alaskabike #bikealaska #alaskabybike #adventurebybike #adventurelife #doglife #bikedog #explorealaska #wildlife #nobear #nottasty #crustriding #springsnow #aroundalaska

Spring trail conditions are in full effect out at Kin Winn! Second guessed my decision right from the parking lot and wished I had brought a fender but, lets be honest, a fender wouldnā€™t have saved me.. The trails were 50/50 for slushy punchy spring snow that was techy (but overall ridable if you could stay out of the deep post holes) and slick sucky mud/ spongy wet grass that felt like riding with 2 flat tires. Single track section was a little better if you can ride the rail of frozen snow but the dirt spots were so soft, I kept my single track explorations short. Give it at least a week to be a little more pleasant, 2 weeks should be pretty great if the warm sunny days keep up! #alaskabike #alaskabybike #adventurebybike #aroundalaska #alaskalife #bikelife #bikedog #springslog #springsnow #muddybikeday #singletrack #notquiteready #sloppyride #slipnslide #fatbike #fatbikelife #nostudsneeded

Dozens turned out in negative 10-degree weather to make their voices heard at Pioneer Park and and advocate for school funding. The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District is one of many across the state facing tough decisions due to budget struggles. The MV Tustumena is off the water for a while. The state ferry, known fondly as Tusty, is getting her annual winter overhaul. Marine Highway Port Engineer Mike Shevlin took pictures of Tusty being hauled out. Officials expect her to be at the JAG Shipyard until the end of April. The Sealaska Heritage Institute has plans this week to welcome home a historic Chilkat robe. The robe was recently purchased at an auction in the Lower 48 and donated to the institute. The ceremony will take place at noon in the clan house at SHIā€™s Walter Soboleff Building in Juneau. Do you have any spare blankets or comforters lying around? The indoor piggies, cared for by the Alaska Potbelly Pig Rescue, can use them. Ski day with the kiddo! Charlie had his first ski race this week on his classics and did great! They swap to skate next week and he wanted to get some extra practice so we hit the trails! For me however, it was my first time on skis this season and, needless to say, I was shaky and slow, like my first time on skis all over again! (But less falling) By the second loop I had some confidence back and remembered how to kick and glide! Mixed bag adventure weekend! Went out to Yentna Station for an overnighter. Pushed our plan a day for poor trail conditions and ended up with warmer weather and still poor trails! Penny and I started out on bikes and Wes rode along leapfrogging us on his snowmachine. Trails were soft and the warmer afternoon temps forced miles of hike a bike and at almost 17mi in, the decision was made to toss the bikes and ourselves on the snowmachine for a ride (not well thought out). 2 miles and we stopped to readjust when a couple snowmachiners headed up towards Skewntna helped us out, providing a much more comfortable ride! (Box checked for my first ever snowmachine ride!) This morning, Penny decided she had enough hike a bike yesterday and opted for a snowmachine ride out to mi 8 with Wes while I started from Yentna Station. Cooler overnight temps and increased traffic firmed up and made for a pleasant ride! Softer as the day warmed up, wind picked up and fresh snow started falling but overall bikable and a huge improvement from the way out! Wes was great and met me every few miles with offers of water, soup and snacks! Opted for a snowmachine ride for the last 10mi to make sure I could get home at a decent time, see the kiddo and relax before work in the morning! Overall, 36.6mi and 12+ hours via bike/ hike-a-bike. Not a bad last big training ride and a great adventure weekend with friends. #bikelife #fatbike #adventurebybike #alaskabybike #snowbike #winterbike #alaskalife #aroundalaska #explorealaska #bikepacking #winterbikepacking #iditarodtrail #yentna #yentnariver #snowmachinealaska #bikewithfriends #adventurefriends

A proposal to allow gambling on Alaskaā€™s ferries is getting mixed reactions in Juneau. The Alaska Beacon reports a Republican lawmaker from Wasilla has proposed putting slot machines on Alaska Marine Highway ships. The idea is to help raise money for the state-run ferry system. Gambling would only be allowed when the ferries are more than 3 miles off Alaskaā€™s coasts. Registered nurses in Ketchikan held an informational picket over the weekend. Theyā€™re involved in contract negotiations with PeaceHealth. The nurses carried a variety of signs showing their position and got some support from the community during their demonstration. The Juneau Police Department is showing its support for Crossing Guards. The department posted a picture on Facebook to thank those who help keep children safe to and from school. The post came at the end of Crossing Guard appreciation week. There are plenty of posts on social media as part of a cold-weather tradition in Fairbanks. Whenever the temperature drops below negative 40, some brave souls put on their swimsuits and take a picture in front of the University of Alaska, Fairbanks campus temperature sign. And itā€™s official: the sun has returned to the town of Utqiagvik, also known as Barrow Alaska. She was one of more than a dozen chefs who recently took part in The Bread Line's 40th annual Soup Off at the Westmark Fairbanks Hotel. Congratulations to GR's Empanada House for taking home The Golden Ladle. And finally, residents at the Alaska Veterans and Pioneers Home in Palmer were treated to a visit from some furry friends. Volunteers with the Mat-Su Animal Shelter stopped by with a few dogs, a kitty, and even a sweet little chinchilla to help warm up hearts here on a chilly winter afternoon! #aroundalaska @foodbankofalaska @akstatetrooper @govdunleavy @matsu

Chilly temps and a hard, fast rolling course made for a great Frosty Bottom this morning! Proud of my finish and improved time by 30min and 1mph faster than last year! Lots of friends out on the course and only 2 moose! Long morning ride out to Mirror Lake with lots of squeaky snow. That sound of fat tire tread carving and compacting snow and you break the trail.. such lovely music! Lots of mixed trail condition out there today- 2-3ā€ of fresh snow, hwy plow cement 2-6ā€ randomly sprinkled along the trail, snow machine groomed, fat tire and boot pocked multiuse trails and lake loops. #bikelife #fatbikelife #fatbikegirl #alaskabybike #alaskalife #adventurebybike #adventurelife #aroundalaska #explorealaska #snowbike #sunrise #mountains #frozenlakes

Chilly ride out on the Iditarod trail today! Just a cool -16 but boy oh boy were those some fantastic trail conditions! I feel comfortable and confident in my clothing set up and stayed warm and comfortable for the whole ride. Few other bikers, couple snow machines and quite a few mushers. Not a bad day on the trail! #bikelife #adventurebybike #alaskabybike #alaskalife #lifebelowzero #subzeroadventure #frosty #myownatmosphere #imadesnow #frostylashclub #aroundalaska #iditarodtrail #sleddogs #mushers #doitforthedoggies #sleddogsmakeitbetter

Our final morning was cool, crisp and clear! We got blue skies and sunrise colors on the clouds as we packed up and sunshine on the mountains as we hiked out. Breaking trail on the snowmachine trail most of the way back but light sleds made for easier work. A few people were taking to the freshly frozen lake, braver than we are after watching it freeze and thaw multiple times over the previous days. Finishing off our Christmas weekend with presents for the kiddo and pups and, some hot cocoa with candy cane peeps! #snow #snowshoeing #winterbackpacking #somuchsnow #sledpacking #cabinlife #adventurelife #adventuresofdawives #adventurepup #adventuredog #alaskalife #aroundalaska #explorealaska #naturalalaska #chugachstatepark

So much wet heavy snow but we decided to go adventure anyway. Slow going even with on the packed snowmachine trail so we kept it shorter and ā€œeasyā€. Of course stomping the outhouse trail back in and more water gathering.. our ice hole stayed open but developed quite a bit of snow and slush. #snow #snowshoeing #winterbackpacking #somuchsnow #waterfromaicehole #snowhole #cabinlife #adventurelife #adventuresofdawives #adventurepup #adventuredog #alaskalife #aroundalaska #explorealaska #naturalalaska #chugachstatepark

Relaxing at a cabin with a little games, coffee and some morning sketches. Relaxing also means chores like water gathering and filtering, firewood chopping and of course, shoveling out the firepit so you can enjoy a lovely outdoor fire and roasting peeps! Pups were still very worn out from 2 days of adventures in deep snow and werenā€™t complaining about a recovery day! Snow fall picked up as the evening went on and warm temps made it heavy and wet. #backpacking #snowshoeing #winterbackpacking #cabinlife #adventurelife #adventuresofdawives #adventurepup #adventuredog #alaskalife #aroundalaska #fireandice #campfire #winterfire #sketchbook #sketchwhatisee

Breaking trail from the cabin to Bold Creek bridge was tough work and opted to take the snowmachine packed atv trail back and save some energy. Pups raged hard, swimming through the deep snow, following bunny sniffs into the trees. We gamed while they napped it out in the evening. #snowshoeing #winteradventures #sledpacking #soheavy #cabinlife #adventurelife #adventuresofdawives #adventurepup #adventuredog #alaskalife #aroundalaska #deepsnow #somanysniffs

Snowshoe hike out to the Yuditna cabin for a long weekend and first night, settling in. Trails were great, if you stuck to the snowmachine trails but the hiking/ biking split off was untouched so we got to enjoy all the extra hills with heavily laden sleds and packs of gear, food and firewood. Lights up and feeling festive! A day on a bike in the snow- no better way to spend a Saturday! Took a long ride out on the Jim Creek trail this morning- lots of deep mashed potato snow, freshly rutted and re-rutted up by lots of 4 wheeled things. Some sections were better than others, some worse.. but I stayed dry and warm, avoided the overflow, no wildlife encounters and nothing but courteous fellow trail users. #bikelife #fatbikelife #snowbike #adventurebybike #alaskabybike #alaskalife #aroundalaska #explorealaska #naturalalaska

Rode Briggs with Brian and Tim today, good company but too bad the trail wasnā€™t. There are tons of postholes and ruts from the recent warm up that made for a rather technical ride. Narnia has a ways to go and the ā€œbridgeā€ is currently an ice damed waterfall.. lots of ice out to the confluence and we opted to stay on shore as the ice channel had a few nearby open spots. Tried to fill in some of the ice faps on the way to the comfluence- breaking ice slabs and filling with snow to make them (hopefully) ridable! #bikelife #adventurebybike #alaskabybike #myfrozenalaska #winterbike #snowbike #alaskalife #aroundalaska #naturalalaska #narnia #bikeonwater #bikewithfriends

This weekendā€™s Alaska MTB Summit was a much anticipated meeting of the minds. 2 days of discussion entirely focused on Mountain biking, trails and the mtb community. So many perspectives from the local and statewide community were represented and the collective experience present in the room, the knowledge of trails and expanse of mtb focused programs in Alaska was utterly impressive. So much hard work went into making this weekend happen and I look forward to the next steps in this process and edging closer to a more collaborative mtb community. #mtbsummit #akmtbsummit #akmtb #mtblife #mtbalaska #bikealaska #adventurebybike #alaskalife #collaborate #bikecommunity #cyclingcommunity #mtbcommunity #aroundalaska #alaskabikecommunity #creatingchange #leadingchange (Note- those Iā€™ve tagged are only a very small handful of those in attendance or represented this weekend! Amazing evening ride with the wifey out at Eklutna! As always, the view was not disappointing. Trail was as muddy and wet as we expected with the massive puddles taking over the trail in many places. I headed a little farther for a couple bonus miles and found a black bear in the trail on my way back. Lots of shouting and clapping got him off and up the hill so I could pass but sure was more curious than I would have preferred and had me unholstering my bear spray for the first time ever! Happy Indigenous Peoplesā€™ Day ā¤ļøā€šŸ”„ Alaska is one out of ten states to recognize today as Indigenous Peoplesā€™ Day rather than Columbus Day ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹ Today we recognize and raise awareness of Americaā€™s painful history at the hands of colonization and to celebrate our culture. Inuit tattoos by Holly Nordlum @hollywouldif_shecould done in the traditional way of skin poking. Traditional tattoos were part of our culture for thousands of years. Women would be adorned with markings to signify milestones in their life. When missionaries arrived, it was proclaimed tattoos were evil and, like many cultural practices, tattooing was banned. The practice was almost lost entirely. Today, a handful of amazing women in Alaska are reviving this part of our culture and a global revitalization is underway. If you havenā€™t read @killersoftheflowermoon by David Grann, do so before the movie @killersoftheflowermoon2023 comes out in theaters October 20th! Iā€™m rereading it again in anticipation! Itā€™s truly a masterpiece of mystery, true crime and Native American hidden history. #alaska #aroundalaska

This weekā€™s weather has been some of the most spectacular sunny, crisp, Fall weather ever and the Fall colors are in full effect! I have spent far more time biking than creating art and enjoying natureā€™s ever changing landscape.
