Back in 2007 I had the pleasure of staying at La Cipressina when commissioned by Andrew Burr to paint my impressions of the house and its aspect. The painting is included in this artwork which Iāve created in VR using a model of Artemis of Dresda combined with a 3D scan of my head and shoulders made by Sean Rodrigo in 2018. I was thinking of how our memories link with mythologies and ancient narratives, the rebirth of nature and the birth of new ideas. @burr4burr @vrartist_seanrodrigo @alexandrasteinacker @thegreatwomenartists @denisedalzellatelier @hsnrgb @claire_brewster @xuewu_zheng @art.zip_ @shoranjiang @dissolved.vission.art @medrar_ @shelterartspace @yahya.0i @yayoikusama_ @gaoyuan_artist @wangning3260 @cniamh9 @a_yehiaa @iiivanliao @orla_o_byrne @raymurph29 @laylarabiewahba #artscouncilcollection #artscouncilengland #artscouncilireland #cultureireland #womenwecreate #allaboutartpodcast #victoriagalleryandmuseum #tate #contemporaryartist #blendedart #womenartists #womenartistsofinstagram #gillianjasongallery
Hereās another experiment from my ongoing exploration of how I can combine 2D, 3D, photographic and VR elements in an artwork. The image on paper behind the boat carrying my scans of āthe scribeā (who features in a lot of my work) is called ālying down in a new placeā and includes an image of my friend and fellow artist Zheng Xuewu @xuewu_zheng taken 12 or 13 years ago! More VR experiments - itās instructive to note how people respond so differently to colour. What is subtle to some is insipid to others, what is garish to some eyes is boldly colourful to others. My experiments combining 2D & 3D artworks in VR continue - this is the first version of āWaiting for the dam to burstā and includes a detail from a painting I made back in 2004 āThree Gorges Dam - a very small sectionā a 3D model of āFishing without my fatherā 2019 and a model of an Egyptian funerary barge. Congratulations to David Eager Maher who has had a second work 'Stretch' acquired by the Arts Council of Ireland for its permanent collection. "David Eager Maherās complex paintings reflect the collapse of cultural certainties and conventional social narratives. Nevertheless, there is tenuous but stubborn coherence in his visual stories and theatrical mise-en-scĆØnes; their disparate elements are held together by imagination and a faint sense of hope, connections that may be obscure to the viewer but are surely felt by the artist. They are positioned somewhere between the past and the future. Several of his most recent pieces, small in scale and with fragmentary texts rendered in rough handwriting below the images, bear traces of cultural nostalgia. āDemoā (2023), for example, depicts a group of long-haired musicians, reminiscent of hippies, sitting in a circle in the open air, but its accompanying commentary sharply punctures the initial impression of relaxed friendship; āStretchā (2022) attaches an ironic apocalyptic text to a vivid psychedelic landscape. These allusions might be read as approving references to the 1960s counterculture, but their undertones are doubting and sceptical." Congratulations to Amanda Rice on the Arts Council's recent acquisition of the film The Flesh of Language (2023) for their collection. SIRIUS commissioned and premiered this film last year. My collaboration with Amanda involved many conversations on Zoom and e-mail exchanges, as well as lots of research and writing. Ultimately, Amanda's efforts resulted in outstanding work, and I was proud to exhibit it. I am delighted with the recognition this film is receiving, and I look forward to watching it again in a future Arts Council collection-related presentation. I am sharing a couple of passages I wrote about the film: "The Flesh of Language is informed by three research strands: Konstantin Raudiveās investigation of anomalous voice-like sounds found on tape recordings that were interpreted as spirit messages; an experiment by Andrew Kitchener aimed at determining whether the extinct Irish elk used its antlers in battle; and inputs on the practicalities of media conservation. The film establishes a parallel between interspecies and paranormal communication, engaging with the barrier separating science and esotericism in addressing the life spans and resurrection of subjects and technologies." Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood at Bristolās Arnolfini is a really interesting exhibition, full of all sorts of different takes on the subject, and not one Virgin and Child in sight. This is (most of) Putting Down Roots, 1985, by @Eileen Cooper (Arts Council Collection), one of her many wonderful artistic explorations of her brand new role as mother - in addition to artist, wife, teacher etc. The style is loose and painterly, in contrast to her later, more familiar hard-edged images, and the painting is BIG, perhaps a sign of its importance to the artist. Itās also very positive, typical of Cooperās view of motherhood as joyful, complex , positive and elastic. #womenartists #motherandchild #artscouncilcollection #arnolfiniarts #bristolarts #actsofcreation #hettiejudah #mothers.in.art

Iām thrilled to finally announce that the @artscouncilireland has acquired āFlipping Relationsā. It is a huge honour to be part of the Arts Councilās collection alongside artists I admire and artworks I love. Honestly, this art craic is a slog! It feels very validating to know that my work will be cared for and have a legacy beyond my years. A DREAM! Iāll miss this work! She only had one outing with me in @galwayartscentr.
