Back in 2007 I had the pleasure of staying at La Cipressina when commissioned by Andrew Burr to paint my impressions of the house and its aspect. The painting is included in this artwork which Iā€™ve created in VR using a model of Artemis of Dresda combined with a 3D scan of my head and shoulders made by Sean Rodrigo in 2018. I was thinking of how our memories link with mythologies and ancient narratives, the rebirth of nature and the birth of new ideas. @burr4burr @vrartist_seanrodrigo @alexandrasteinacker @thegreatwomenartists @denisedalzellatelier @hsnrgb @claire_brewster @xuewu_zheng @art.zip_ @shoranjiang @dissolved.vission.art @medrar_ @shelterartspace @yahya.0i @yayoikusama_ @gaoyuan_artist @wangning3260 @cniamh9 @a_yehiaa @iiivanliao @orla_o_byrne @raymurph29 @laylarabiewahba #artscouncilcollection #artscouncilengland #artscouncilireland #cultureireland #womenwecreate #allaboutartpodcast #victoriagalleryandmuseum #tate #contemporaryartist #blendedart #womenartists #womenartistsofinstagram #gillianjasongallery

Hereā€™s another experiment from my ongoing exploration of how I can combine 2D, 3D, photographic and VR elements in an artwork. The image on paper behind the boat carrying my scans of ā€˜the scribeā€™ (who features in a lot of my work) is called ā€˜lying down in a new placeā€™ and includes an image of my friend and fellow artist Zheng Xuewu @xuewu_zheng taken 12 or 13 years ago! More VR experiments - itā€™s instructive to note how people respond so differently to colour. What is subtle to some is insipid to others, what is garish to some eyes is boldly colourful to others. My experiments combining 2D & 3D artworks in VR continue - this is the first version of ā€˜Waiting for the dam to burstā€™ and includes a detail from a painting I made back in 2004 ā€˜Three Gorges Dam - a very small sectionā€™ a 3D model of ā€˜Fishing without my fatherā€™ 2019 and a model of an Egyptian funerary barge. We spent time discussing breastfeeding experiences, finding out how Leeds as a city needs to be more breastfeeding aware with places of safe sanctuary for infants to feed. During the workshops we produced a floor flag and created a manifesto for better care and inclusive feeding including breastfeeding throughout Leeds. As promised hereā€™s The Dreamer #5, 2024, handmade papers, acrylic, collage, gold leaf, 50x38cm. When life is stressful and pressured I am drawn to making work about the dream world, not so much as an escape but as a way of engaging poetically with lifeā€™s ambiguities, of being immersed in a world which cuts across time and physical space. Congratulations to David Eager Maher who has had a second work 'Stretch' acquired by the Arts Council of Ireland for its permanent collection. "David Eager Maherā€™s complex paintings reflect the collapse of cultural certainties and conventional social narratives. Nevertheless, there is tenuous but stubborn coherence in his visual stories and theatrical mise-en-scĆØnes; their disparate elements are held together by imagination and a faint sense of hope, connections that may be obscure to the viewer but are surely felt by the artist. They are positioned somewhere between the past and the future. Several of his most recent pieces, small in scale and with fragmentary texts rendered in rough handwriting below the images, bear traces of cultural nostalgia. ā€˜Demoā€™ (2023), for example, depicts a group of long-haired musicians, reminiscent of hippies, sitting in a circle in the open air, but its accompanying commentary sharply punctures the initial impression of relaxed friendship; ā€˜Stretchā€™ (2022) attaches an ironic apocalyptic text to a vivid psychedelic landscape. These allusions might be read as approving references to the 1960s counterculture, but their undertones are doubting and sceptical." Extract from an essay by John Hutchinson, former Director of the Douglas Hyde Gallery. Congratulations to Amanda Rice on the Arts Council's recent acquisition of the film The Flesh of Language (2023) for their collection. SIRIUS commissioned and premiered this film last year. My collaboration with Amanda involved many conversations on Zoom and e-mail exchanges, as well as lots of research and writing. Ultimately, Amanda's efforts resulted in outstanding work, and I was proud to exhibit it. I am delighted with the recognition this film is receiving, and I look forward to watching it again in a future Arts Council collection-related presentation. I am sharing a couple of passages I wrote about the film: "The Flesh of Language is informed by three research strands: Konstantin Raudiveā€™s investigation of anomalous voice-like sounds found on tape recordings that were interpreted as spirit messages; an experiment by Andrew Kitchener aimed at determining whether the extinct Irish elk used its antlers in battle; and inputs on the practicalities of media conservation. The film establishes a parallel between interspecies and paranormal communication, engaging with the barrier separating science and esotericism in addressing the life spans and resurrection of subjects and technologies." CALL OUT to my bra-wearing people! I need your old bras to hoist, support, lift and cradle some new work- like the artwork in this image. While Iā€™m revisiting this work, I thought Iā€™d put this out into the world! If you have a couple of old favourites that have seen better days, then maybe now is the push you need to say goodbye. I need some straps for some work this summer, and I will also need quite a lot more for work I will be exhibiting in 2026. So please keep me in mind before you throw them out over the next year+. Reposted: Iā€™m thrilled to finally announce that the @artscouncilireland has acquired ā€˜Flipping Relationsā€™. Acts of Creation: On Art and Motherhood at Bristolā€™s Arnolfini is a really interesting exhibition, full of all sorts of different takes on the subject, and not one Virgin and Child in sight. This is (most of) Putting Down Roots, 1985, by @Eileen Cooper (Arts Council Collection), one of her many wonderful artistic explorations of her brand new role as mother - in addition to artist, wife, teacher etc. The style is loose and painterly, in contrast to her later, more familiar hard-edged images, and the painting is BIG, perhaps a sign of its importance to the artist. Itā€™s also very positive, typical of Cooperā€™s view of motherhood as joyful, complex , positive and elastic. #womenartists #motherandchild #artscouncilcollection #arnolfiniarts #bristolarts #actsofcreation #hettiejudah #mothers.in.art

There i am in my natural habitat wearing my favourite cat apron. When i made the piece in 2023 i didn't anticipate how heavy the work would become. This photo was taken in January when i revisited the work to insert adequate handles. As usual this job took WAY WAY longer than I expected! Reposted: Iā€™m thrilled to finally announce that the @artscouncilireland has acquired ā€˜Flipping Relationsā€™. It is a huge honour to be part of the Arts Councilā€™s collection alongside artists I admire and artworks I love. Honestly, this art craic is a slog! It feels very validating to know that my work will be cared for and have a legacy beyond my years. A DREAM! Iā€™ll miss this work! She only had one outing with me in @galwayartscentr. THANKS LADS! Iā€™m overwhelmed by all the kind responses to my news of the @artscouncilireland acquisition of ā€˜flipping relationsā€™ I thought Iā€™d share some less glamorous process pics of the mould and setting up the leaf for casting. I really enjoyed designing this mould. Although, it may look chaotic, the blankets perfectly supported the structure of the leaf. I have since renovated my studio. However, i can't deny that iā€™m messy! I swear I spend more time cleaning up after myself than sculpting!
