🗞Our latest Cultivating Creativity column in the Belleville Intelligencer: By Kodie Trahan-Guay Carl Wiens: Works on Paper opens May 2nd, 2024 from 4-6pm and runs until May 31st, 2024. This show is a presentation of more than a decade’s worth of work by Wiens that he is hoping will showcase an evolution in the style, medium and content of his work. For the past month Wiens has been working to build frames, print and sign the new editions that will be shown. He commissioned Spark Box Studio to print his work, and has spent quite a bit of time cutting and assembling the collages unique to each background. Wiens teaches illustration at Sheridan College in Oakville to upper year students and is a graduate of OCADU. His background includes over thirty years experience as a full-time illustrator for newspapers, magazines and books as well as having his work hang in group and solo exhibitions. His love of creation began in childhood. Wiens loves how art can help people understand the world around them while providing them with joy. “I think that I simply held on to the joy of creating that we all feel as children. That’s easy to say, but it takes some effort to protect and nurture,” says Wiens. “Drawing and painting can help a person make sense of the patterns and phenomena that surround us. Working with different materials and looking for new ideas and techniques is a constant. The film includes scenes in India and conversations with David Sylvester, Foy Nissen, Bhupen Khakhar, and Haridas Swali. In a conversation between Hodgkin and Sylvester, Hodgkin states: “I would like, and think for obvious reasons will never succeed, but I would like to be a classical painter, where all emotion, all feeling, turns into a beautifully articulated, anonymous, architectural memorial at the other end. I am so incredibly grateful to the Arts Council of Northern Ireland for purchasing these for their permanent collection…! ☘️☘️☘️ These two pieces were on display at Craft NI Gallery (@craftnigallery) as part of a QEST (@qestcraft) Northern Ireland exhibition. I am so pleased that they have found a new home during this fantastic show 😊 The piece on the left titled ‘Rocking Rainbow’ is the first ever sculptural piece I created in niobium after an amazing masterclass @bishopsland_educational_trust with @alicefryjewellery 🌈 The piece to the right titled ‘See Saw’ was made shortly after to showcase at my first @goldsmithsfair ..! This piece combines niobium and silver through weaving to look at the gradient changes in pinks achievable through anodising niobium 💗 I find it so exciting when work goes to a new home… In some ways it’s hard to say goodbye to some pieces. From the 4th of May ‘Layering Cultures’ will be exhibited at Salts Mill as part of the Saltaire Arts Trail. The piece has been made in response to the oral testimonies of Bradford millworkers during the 1970’s, and after re-reading my father’s memoirs from the time he worked at Listers Mill. The work has been undertaken as part of the Lost Mills and Ghost Mansions Project. The work was commissioned by @509arts (founded by Alan Dix) and was funded by Arts Council England. The finished piece will be exhibited at @saltsmillofficial during Saltaire Arts Trail 4-6 May, then at weekends through May. Poem by Nabeela Ahmed, memories by William Welsh and Joyce Dixon.
