Unlike in 1972, Ferrari did show up at Le Mans in 1973 – and with three 312 P/B Coda Lungas to boot, each subtly modified to cope better with the challenges of the French endurance classic. Assigned the race number 16, chassis 0892 was driven by Merzario and Pace. And if ever there was a sure sign there was life in the old Italian dog – the 312 P/B – yet, they both set identical pole times of 3min37.5sec. The unmatched top speed of 206.3mph on the Mulsanne Straight was arguably even more encouraging for Ferrari than the pole position itself. Internally at Ferrari, it was agreed that this 312 P/B would serve the role of the hare. Merzario would start as quickly as possible in a bid to force the chasing Matras into overstressing their cars. Sure enough, when the Porsche 911 course car peeled into the pit lane and the braying pack is released at the beginning of the race, Merzario surges ahead with such energy you’d assume the green-striped 312 P/B was running on some sort of rocket fuel. By the time Merzario handed over to his teammate around the two-hour mark, he’d carved out an enviable lead and even lapped the sister ‘tortoise’ Ferrari of Jacky Ickx and Brian Redman. The remainder of the race played out in a fashion nobody could have predicted. Each of the Ferraris had a stint at leading, though ultimately mechanical maladies and resultant time in the pits cost all three dearly. Happy Birthday Cowboy ! Arturio Francesco Merzario (Chiavenna, Como, 11 de março de 1943) é um ex-automobilista italiano de Fórmula 1. Participou de 85 Grandes Prêmios, estreando no GP da Grã-Bretanha de 1972. Durante sua primeira temporada na Fórmula 1 em 1972 com a Ferrari, Merzario também participou da corrida de carros esportes, vencendo as provas de 1000km Spa, a Targa Florio e a Rand 9 Hour. Depois de um ano difícil com a Ferrari em 1973, ele foi para a Williams e terminou em terceiro lugar em uma corrida fora do campeonato no Brasil, mas não teve sucesso nas temporadas de 1974 e 1975. Merzario abandonou a temporada de 1975 para retornar aos carros esportes com a Alfa Romeo, vencendo quatro corridas mais a Targa Florio novamente. Voltou para fazer apenas uma apresentação no Grande Prêmio da Itália de 1975, agora pilotando um carro da equipe Copersucar. Terminou a corrida no 11º lugar. Merzario retornou à Fórmula 1 em 1976, primeiro com a March, e depois com a Wolf, mas novamente não obteve bons resultados. Quando Merzario não encontrou vaga de piloto nas equipes da Fórmula 1, ele montou a sua própria equipe Merzario em 1977, que participou na Fórmula 1 por três anos, inicialmente com carros da March antes de construir seu próprio chassis, e mais tarde se mudou para a Fórmula 2. Gdy w @stmoritz na dobre hulała śnieżna zamieć, impreza @theicestmoritz przeniosła się do podziemnego garażu 🌨️ Tam brylował Arturo Merzario, z którym mieliśmy okazję zamienić kilka słów. Przemiły Włoch ścigał się między innymi w Formule 1 oraz 24h Le Mans. Merzario jest też bohaterem kilku barwnych padokowych historii... (środkowe zdjęcie)📍Salzburgring; 1976 Niki Lauda wręcza Arturo Merzario swojego złotego Rolexa Oyster Perpetual Datejust ⌚ ▪️Zegarek był podarunkiem dla Merzario w geście podziękowania za uratowanie życia podczas tragicznego wypadku Laudy na torze Nurburgring. Merzario był jedną z trzech osób, która zatrzymała się podczas wyścigu i wyciągała Austriaka z płonącego bolidu. W swoich wspomnieniach Włoch opowiadał, że nie ma pojęcia jak udało mu się wyszarpnąć płonącego Laude z kokpitu, bo Merzario ważył wtedy zaledwie 60 kilogramów. Jak sam mówił „robiłem to, co trzeba było zrobić! „ Zaraz po tym jak Lauda znalazł się na asfalcie Merzario rozpoczął masaż serca. ▪️Początkowo @arturo_merzario_official nie chciał przyjąć Rolexa i poczuł się bardzo urażony tym gestem. Duży wpływ na to miało pierwsze spotkanie Laudy i Merzario podczas GP Włoch na torze Monza, wtedy Austriak przeszedł obok Włocha zupełnie bez słowa. Ostatecznie Arturo, za namową szefa swojego zespołu - Carlo Chiti, przyjął zegarek, ale nigdy go nie założył na rękę. ▪️Rolex przeleżał ponad 40 lat w szuflacie, aż do momentu, gdy w maju 2019 Merzario udzielił wywiadu dla magazynu QP i został poproszony o jego założenie. Na wywiad Włoch przyszedł w białym kowboj kapeluszu, czyli dokładnie tak jak zwykł się nosić na przełomie lat sześćdziesiątych i siedemdziesiątych.
