Per chi non lo sapesse, le Geminidi sono uno sciame di meteore che non proviene da una cometa, bensì dall’asteroide denominato 3200 Phaethon, gli scienziati stimano che entro cento anni questo fenomeno non sarà più visibile poiché i detriti di tale asteroide si stanno man mano esaurendo a causa di ogni passaggio verso la Terra dove bruciano nell’atmosfera dando origine a uno degli spettacoli astronomici più belli dell’anno. Un’altra cosa è che il colore delle meteore varia a seconda della loro composizione chimica, ad esempio avremo delle scie viola in presenza di calcio nella meteora, blu/azzurrina in presenza di ferro, verde in presenza di magnesio, arancione per la presenza di sodio e rossa in presenza di ossigeno/nitrogeno. Nella foto oltre allo sciame di meteore possiamo vedere la cintura di Orione con sotto la sua Nebulosa M42, alla destra della nebulosa la stella che vedete è Rigel, in alto a centro sinistra il puntino arancione è Betelgeuse (candidata a prossima supernova) e infine tutta a sinistra c’è la Nebulosa Rosetta. From the heart of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, under Bortle 1 conditions - some of the darkest skies in the world. By far the most beautiful night sky I’ve ever experienced. I'd only ever tried shots like this (MW+moon) in higher Bortle conditions, and was so surprised to see this level of detail in the night sky. Normally, with the added light pollution from higher Bortle areas, the addition of moonshine blows out most of the detail making shots like this a lot more difficult to get. ✨Day 253 - April 19th, 2024 - Late night editing to try to keep up 🙃 it’s really sweet to see my Messier chart starting to really fill out. I struggled a bit with editing, I forgot a step with the first edit of M105 so I had to remember to run the rest of the stacks through colour calibration. Images: -The first slide is the edit of M35, located in Gemini, 22x30sec, darks used. I didn’t have to do too much while editing to bring out the bit of colour. I’m happy with it for the few exposures used -The second slide is the second edit I did of M105 in Leo, I remembered to use colour calibration for this one 🙃 38x30sec, darks used. M95 and M96 where also in frame 🙌 -The third slide is the zoom in on the galaxies -The fourth slide is the edit I struggled with because I forgot to do one of the first steps of colour calibration -The fifth slide is the edit of M102 located in Ursa Major, 15x1min, darks used. It turned out okay but it could use more exposures -The sixth slide is the zoom in -The seventh slide is of M108 and M97 from March 23rd, really wishing I moved up the framing to get them better, 51x30sec, darks used. Gotta catch your comets like your Pokémon ! Once in a lifetime opportunity , and a tick off the bucket list capturing the Comet Pons- Brooks aka the Devil’s Comet last night cruising along the western horizon at Cape Schanck . Given that the low level cloud cover was slowly but surely increasing I was feeling doubtful on my chances in capturing the comet . Got the tracker and camera setup and working at around 6:45pm and Lo behold my first image shows the little green bugger along with a surprise meteor streak in the sky ! I let my tracker run for another 10 mins or so capturing about 15 tracked images in total at 75mm focal length until clouds covered up the horizon . Decided to use Siril to stack my tracked images and very pleased with its comet stacking and registering functionality; to see that comet tail popping out in the final image was pure joy ; despite cropping the image to its usable limits 😂. NEW MILKYWAY EDIT! (2023) Lake Pleasant (Erie, PA) On a clear dark night if you look to the southeastern sky looking over Lake Pleasant you'll find a faint contrast stretching across the sky. A quick story here is that this photo was actually a plan b photo. I had in mind another composition but back in May of 2023 when scouting this lake shore I found a dead tree in the water. I thought this would be a really cool photo to capture. When I returned in mid July of 2023 I found that of course everything around that dead tree in the water was overgrown. Then, I told myself I am not wasting this clear night. So about 20 feet away standing straight up was this old dead tree you see here. I lined up the composition and this was the final result! I love it!! Milkyway core season is well underway and I can't wait to bring you new 2024 images here soon. "Alien Hoodoo"⁠ .⁠ While my last post had this fantastic hoodoo featured during blue hour, I was really there to get it with the Milky Way. I had planned on doing it with some low level lighting (which I did with @travelsfromutah and @brendon.porter), but my twilight blend image worked better for me.⁠ .⁠ The spring Milky Way has a nice flat appearance as it comes up during the night. But it makes for a long night. I did the twilight exposure around 9 pm, but the MW didn’t rise into position until 3:30 am. Such is the life of an astro photographer!⁠ .⁠ On the technical side, the Milky Way image was taken both with an astro moded camera, and with a Ha filter. It was tracked from a nearby position that gave me an unobstructed view of the sky. Guardians of the night: Yanchep's RAAF bunkers offer a glimpse into both human history and cosmic wonders. No.227 RAAF Radar Bunkers Yanchep and the rising Milky Way. I have included 4 photos from the night and was close to choosing 3 for the main photo. Street art, history, exploring and wildlife. All of these things can be found when visiting the No.227 RAAF Radar Bunkers just north of Yanchep. These once derelict and vandalised structures were brought back to life by local street artists Paul Deej and Chris McBride with the help of students from Yanchep Secondary College. Built in 1943 the 2 bunkers held radar equipment, the northern one had the receiver and the southern one had the transmitter. Any aircraft detected would be relayed to the WA Air Defence Headquarters. Deep channels have been cut into the floors of the bunkers to house the necessary utilities for such (at the time) large and complex machines. Around the bunkers you will find big squares of concrete, these anchored the feet of 2 tall radio towers The RAAF and WAAAF staff that worked there were housed at Yanchep National park as the area was considered too far away at the time to commute! Stars in Stripes USS Midway Museum | San Diego, CA 4/18/2024 Captured this star trail over the famed USS Midway aircraft carrier-turned-museum on my recent visit to San Diego. Typically I’ve been on the ship’s deck admiring vintage warplanes during a corporate event, but it was cool to focus more on the ship from the outside this time. Heute möchte ich euch eines meiner Lieblingsbilder aus Teneriffa zeigen. Ich mag das Bild, weil es auf mich harmonisch wirkt und ich es gerne anschaue. Wahrscheinlich würde ich heute, im Vergleich zum September als ich das Bild gemacht habe, perspektivisch etwas anders arbeiten. Das Bild ist an meinem letzten Abend auf der Insel entstanden.
