Today's National Gallery 200th birthday pick is 'Men of the Docks' by George Bellows, an American painter of the early twentieth century who is fairly unfamiliar to me. Originally from Ohio, he moved to New York in the early 1900s and became part of what was called the Ashcan School, depicting working class life in 'The Big Apple' in an expressive way. I love the contrast between the suggested large buildings in the background and the industrial foreground. I'm noticing that I much prefer more modern paintings maybe because, even Impressionists, are more real to me, either in their style or subject matter. How about you? Are you a Renaissance or modern fan, or maybe both? #NT200 #happybirthdaynationalgallery #ashcanschoolofamericanrealism #workingclasslifeNewYorkstyle

Hello Kent Friends, hope you are all well. The holiday season is upon us, and the Rockwell Kent Forum is going on vacation, like many other people. So, this will (probably) be our last post of the year. It has been a very exciting year for Rockwell Kent and those of us who appreciate him, his life, and his work. We have a lot of great information sitting in the editor’s In Box, waiting for the new year. Until then, here is a great, though little known, winter pastime drawing by Kent of a skier. Kent’s youngest son Gordon went to Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. (Think of the movie, “The Holdovers.) In 1938 he was the art editor for their yearbook, “Pot Pourri.” He got his Dad to donate the drawing. For the next several weeks, if you are looking for something to do, check out our website. We have a special “Rockwell Kent Christmas” section under “Special Collections.” Also, some great articles, podcasts, and videos. Happy Holidays! www.rockwellkent.us

Edward Hopper, Summer in the City, 1950 and Excursion Into Philosophy, 1959 Private collection This morning’s post by Soyer reminded us about a couple paintings by Hopper that were influenced by Soyer’s-both artists were masters of portraying loneliness, solitude and the tension of couples who are close in a room but can seem miles apart. #art #artlover #artcollector #edwardhopper #ashcan #ashcanschool #raphaelsoyer #ashcan #ashcanschoolofamericanrealism #solitude #tension #bedroom #couples #ashcandailyhopper
