Another souvenir puzzle! I picked up several souvenir puzzles on my recent trip to California. This one is from (can you guess? 😉) the Los Angeles County Museum of Art @lacma, which we managed to visit while we were in Pasadena. The museum bills itself as "the largest art museum in the Western US," but it didn't seem that big. Not as big as @sfmoma at least, but maybe their collection is larger. Idk, but LACMA did have a whole building full of modern & contemporary art, which was amazing! Alexander Calder made this artwork specifically for LACMA's opening in 1965. I didn't see this piece on display, but they have a Calder mobile in the Broad building with all the other fabulous modern art. You know where you can see a lot of Calder's works though? SFMOMA! I swear that museum has ruined all other museums for me! 😆 At SFMOMA, they have a whole room of Calder mobiles and a beautiful wall as you enter with a quote from him. LACMA also had an incredibly tiny little store. So small that only like 10 folks were allowed in at a time, and you had to stand in line and wait to enter. It was a really good museum shop but just laughably small. Anyway, I was thrilled to find this puzzle there. The quality is fine. Whew! Finally finished the largest woodworking project I have taken on yet! I made the three art cases for the Rufino Tamayo #LACMA exhibit at #lacountyfair. The first two cases were difficult, but not like things I have made before. The final large case was 9 feet tall and 8 feet wide. The pictures don't do justice to the size. I couldn't finish it in my garage because it couldn't make it through the door! The two smaller cases are housing antiqities from Central America that are more than 2,000 years old. That's why it was so important to get the finishes and paint perfect! Make sure you visit the fair and the exhibit to check out all the amazing displays and the art in this exhibit. If you do, spare a moment to look at the cases, too! I used 8 sheets of 3/4 in MDO and 4 sheets of 3/4 inch MDF. I was also able to buy some upgraded tools to help me along the way. Look out for my new #festool sander and Domino. Without them it would have taken even longer! Now that my time is free again, watch for more videos being uploaded. I am also WAAAY behind on the garden, so it's time to plant!

Rick Dillingham (1952–1994) was an American ceramic artist, scholar, collector and museum professional best known for his broken pot technique and scholarly publications on Pueblo pottery. Dillingham received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1974 from the University of New Mexico. After graduating with his BFA, Dillingham went to Claremont Graduate School of Scripps College, where he studied with Paul Soldner. He received a MFA degree in 1976 from Claremont Graduate School. He also worked for a time as a restorer of historical Native American pottery at the Museum of New Mexico Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe. In 1974 he curated and wrote the catalog for the Maxwell Museum’s exhibition, Seven Families in Pueblo Pottery. Dillingham’s personal ceramic work combined age-old Native American methods and ancient Japanese Raku pottery techniques with his own fertile imagination to create a unique, highly original and daring modern body of distinctive, deeply personal work of familiarity perhaps, but also the distancer sense that you’ve never seen anything like this before, that new ground is being broken here. Dillingham’s ceramics are highly prized and extremely rare as his life was cut short. This work, UNTITLED, is fired ceramic with no glaze, measures 10 X 8 x 8 inches and dated July 1974, comes from a prestigious local craft collector. Please DM for details.
