12x12” Sorry about the glare. This is the last painting I did in New Harmony for The First Brush of Spring. There was a peony farm on the edge of town and the whole field was just about to explode in blooms! So sad I couldn’t be there to see it. But there were a few in bloom and I enjoyed painting them very much!. . . . . #americanimpressionistsociety #oilpainting #oilpaintersofameria #impressionism #pleinairmag #pleinairmagazine #realismtoday #realism #buyartnow #painting #ipapa_indiana #ipapa #indianaartist #hoosierartist #fortwayneartist #fortwayneartistsguild #flowerpainting #peonies #peonypainting #pleinair #pleinairpainting #paintingfromlife #americanart #americanartist #artcollector #interiordesign #americanartcollector #lightandshadow #capturinglight #floralpainting

“Self Portrait in America” work in progress in the studio. Reflections on American activity, the average American’s remote isolation from much of it, the implicit helplessness and willful ignorance present in many Americans, and the serene sort of “calm before the storm” that I think many of us are feeling. The large open area in the grass will soon be filled with some of the symbols I think are important in this conversation. More to come… 🛤️

Edward Hopper is known for paintings of American towns and landscapes but his trips to Paris from 1906-1910, in his mid-20s, had a lasting impact. It was there that he was introduced to impressionist works of Edgar Degas (1834-1970), Édouard Manet (1832-1833), and Claude Monet (1840-1926). Their art left an indelible mark on him. He was 30 when he painted New York Interior in 1921, whose subject evokes the ballet dancers depicted by the French Impressionist Edgar Degas. Edward Hopper’s last trip to Paris was in 1910 and he once said, “It took me ten years to get over Europe.” * Edward Hopper in Paris, ca. 1906. * Edward Hopper, "New York Interior" c. 1921, oil on canvas, 24 5/16 × 29 3/8 in., Whitney Museum of American Art * Edgar Degas, "The Dance Class" 1874, oil on canvas, 32 7/8 x 30 3/8 in., Bequest of Mrs. Harry Payne Bingham, 1986, Metropolitan Museum of Art #edwardhopper #americanartist #artinspiration #newyorkinterior #whitneymuseum #edgardegas #thedanceclass #metmuseum @whitneymuseum @metmuseum

Mixed Medium Installation: William Charles Smith, 2024 where the artificial ends an Iowa Pop Art Exhibition 03 May - 02 June CSPS Hall 1103 3rd St. SE Cedar Rapids, Iowa ID in ALT text This large-scale installation, a testament to the cycle of life, is a deeply personal tribute to my cherished Grandfather, William Charles Smith. Born on March 6, 1931, and transcended to heaven on January 13, 2024. He served in the U.S. Air Force from September 1953 to September 1955 and in the Air Force Reserve for several more years, leaving a profound impact on his country and his family. IMAGE DESCRIPTION: This poignant installation is a rich tapestry of symbolism. An all-white medical wheelchair adorned with all-white butterflies symbolizes the artist's Grandfather's journey to heaven. The white, a symbol of rebirth and new beginnings, contrasts a dark, stained wooden bench that sits across from the wheelchair, representing the comfort and stability he did and provides. This bench was hand crafted by William and his Father. Between them, a plot of soil resembling a freshly rowed garden, ready for spring planting, symbolizes the cycle of life. Emerging from the soil, baby green ginkgo leaves represent hope in new life. Draped over the back of the wheelchair is an American flag, ascending to the heavens, symbolizing his service to his country. The flag is being pulled up by hundreds of all-white butterflies. "In his 92 years, my Grandfather did an extraordinary job as a person and a role model. Being of service requires alignment with your values and the ability to look inward, recognize what kind of energy you're putting forth, and recalibrate yourself so that your impact on others creates the change you want to see in the world. Service requires empathy, active listening, and a genuine desire to understand and meet the needs of others—all talents my Grandfather possessed and displayed throughout his life." #art #artinstallation #galleryinstallation #bipocartist #iowaartist #art #accessibility #artadvocacy #americanartist #americanflag #airforce #family #lifework #butterflies @cspshall @iowapopart @arts_midwest @americans4arts @_the_art_of_installation_ @artnews

„Nancy Holt. Circles of Light“ @gropiusbau in #berlin until July 21, 2024 “Nancy Holt was a visionary of site-specific installation and moving image. She paid attention to the inextricable human impact on the natural world by folding ecological considerations into her artistic practice. The exhibition Circles of Light presents Holt’s wide-ranging artistic output spanning 20 years, paying attention to her ecological commitment, exploration of perception and systems, and persistent interest in language and sound. She made her first artworks in 1966, creating concrete poems that explore how language structures perception. Soon thereafter, she started to use the voice and camera, encouraging an awareness of the surrounding space and a sense of place. She consistently investigated qualities of light, and from 1967 photography became foundational for her work. Its serial and circular nature fascinated Holt, who saw it as a tool that focuses visual perception. From the mid-1970s onwards, Holt developed innovative site-responsive sculptures. As can be seen in her landmark earthwork Sun Tunnels (1973-1976), she incorporated astronomy, the earth’s rotation and concepts of time and place into her expansive outdoor sculptures. Collaboration was a vital working method for Holt, thinking with experts, artist friends and individuals who had a particular or personal understanding of certain sites.” ✍️ @gropiusbau The artist appears in a number of the exhibited videos - in conversations with friends such as Robert Smithsonian or experimenting with her own voice. #nancyholt #earthwork #lightart #sitespecificart #installationart #videoart #contemporaryart #femaleartist #americanartist #gropiusbau #artinberlin #travelingartcurator #flyingartcurator

Willard Leroy Metcalf, Early Spring Afternoon - Central Park, 1911. Oil on canvas, 91.3 × 91.3 cm. Brooklyn Museum, New York, United States of America. After studying at the Boston Museum school, American artist Willard Leroy Metcalf left for Paris in 1883 to attend the Académie Julian. During his free time, he travelled widely throughout France creating scenes of peasant life. These ultimately influenced his turn to landscape painting. In 1886, he was the first American to visit Giverny, where the French Impressionist master Claude Monet lived and worked. Soon many of his countrymen flocked there, forming an American artist's colony. In April 1911, Metcalf painted Early Spring Afternoon - Central Park from his apartment on Manhattan's West Side. The view from his window gave him a high vantage point by which he created this panoramic scene. The artist captures a light-filled spring day in New York by using a pastel colour palette and soft brushwork. He presents a clear blue sky and trees just beginning to blossom. Metcalf's time in France and familiarity with Impressionist cityscapes painted from a bird's eye perspective likely influenced this work. #willardleroymetcalf #metcalf #americanart #americanartist #20thcenturyart #20thcenturyartist #art #artist #artwork #arthistory #historyofart #histoiredelart #storiadellarte #color #painting #instart #masterpiece #artlovers #artdetails #spring #newyork #newyorkcity #nyc #centralpark #manhattan #usa @brooklynmuseum

The nocturnes of James MacNeeil Whistler, Charles Rollo Peters, Winslow Homer, and Frederic Remington have attracted my emotional interest for some time, as they open the door to internal reflection, rather than considering the external details of form as revealed in daylight. Shape, mood, mystery seem to dominate, and encourage creativity and a “looser” approach. This is my latest, based on a night-time view in Santa Barbara that I experienced from the patio of the El Encanto Hotel. “Effulgence” 14x11, acrylic on cradled board #nocturnepainting #acrylicpainting #CityLightsMagic #santabarbara #americanartist #abstractlandscape

One of my new paintings (54” x48” acrylic on canvas 2024) of front range rock formations that will be in my show at the Dairy Arts Center, opening May 10th 5-8pm. Curated by @studiodrewaustin. Love for you to come by. This formation is from the @redrocksco park in Jefferson County just a few minutes from where I live. I ‘borrowed’ the image from a hike that @lisa.t.johnson took there. Thank you Lisa!! These red rocks belong to the Fountain formation, a layer of sedimentary rocks that were formed around 300 million years old. They were pushed up all along the Front Range from the famous Amphitheater to @gardenofthegodspark. Why I love NYC: Yesterday on impulse with time to kill, I ambled into the Quad to see “Jamie Wyeth and the Unflinching Eye”. The first shot of Jamie, son of painter Andrew Wyeth and grandson of illustrator N.C. Wyeth, he is painting and encrusted with paint: on his clothes, under his fingernails, top of his lips. After the film, director Glenn Holsten & he appeared in person, Wyeth’s right hand fingernails still encrusted with paint. #jamiewyeth #andrewwyeth #ncwyeth #quadcinema #painter #painters #painterly #americanpainter #documentary #documentaries #glennholsten #americanart #americanartist #nyc #nycmovies

Photo copyright National Gallery of Art Famous paintings in boxing-art history: George Wesley Bellows, Both Members of This Club, 1909 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: Overall: 45 1/4 x 63 3/16 in. Framed: 52 3/8 x 70 in. National Gallery of Art   George Wesley Bellows (1882 – 1925) was an American realist painter, known for his bold depictions of urban life in New York City. Bellows was part of the Ashcan movement, and he was one of the main representatives of American Realism in the early 20th century.   There is a famous series of six oil paintings that Bellows devoted to the sport of prizefighting. “Both Members of This Club” is the third and largest of three similar boxing subjects that Bellows painted in his mid-20s (the other two of his early paintings are “Club Night” and “Stag at Sharkey’s”). Tom Sharkey’s Athletic Club was a bar across the street from Bellows’s studio. The Irish-born proprietor, Tom “Sailor Tom” Sharkey, was a former heavyweight champion who staged private boxing contests in the back room of his saloon. At that time, the sport was prohibited. Sharkey and others circumvented the law by staging bouts in their private “clubs”. Boxers were announced in the ring as “both members of this club.” Different from the first two paintings this painting has an interracial theme, that made the painting at that time even more controversial. Especially since the black boxer appears to win the fight. It’s likely that Bellows intended the painting as an allusion to the success of the African American prizefighter Jack Johnson, who had won the world heavyweight championship by defeating the white fighter Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia in 1908. #georgebellows #georgewesleybellows #bothmembersofthisclub #nationalgalleryofart #artmuseum #americanrealism #realism #americanartist #boxing #boxen #boxeo #boxe #Бокс #fighting #sport #sports #boxinghistory #history #historia #blackhistory #jackjohnson #black #art #arte #fineart #painting #painter #thehobby #sportcollectibles #explorepage

David Amico Pearls and Switch, 1989 Oil on canvas 98 x 80 x 3 in David Amico’s paintings occupy a space between spontaneity and purpose, between the representative and the dissociative. As a young artist, Amico rejected any form of consistent style or technique in his practice. Instead, he embraced an approach emphasizing innovation and exploration within each of his paintings, and has remained faithful to this approach for over forty years. Each painting is autonomous, though the body of Amico’s artwork remains unwaveringly within the realm of his aesthetic. Amico’s paintings are abstract but derivatively representational in nature with highly nuanced colors and texture. Lines, marks, industrial traces - re-tracings of his surroundings - are imbued with a poetic logic, while the luminous colours, shapes, and forms in unexpected compositions, all complement complex varied surface textures. Subjects for Amico’s abstract pursuit are objects such as discarded cardboard, metal piping, concrete blocks, shards of glass, and elements of architecture. Amico states of his practice: “in the space between work and life, I refer to things existing on the edge between observation and conceptual abstraction, considering the marginal incidents that trigger cerebral process.” Amico’s paintings highlight the interplay between signifier and signified, emphasizing the dissonance between the abstract nature of each painting and the mundane physicality of the objects to which each painting refers. David Amico was born in Rochester, New York in 1951. He attended California State University and Hunter College. Amico, a Full Professor at Claremont Graduate University, has been a mainstay on the Los Angeles art scene since the mid-1970’s. His paintings are included in numerous notable collections. Amico lives and works in Los Angeles. #davidamico #americanartist #abstractart #abstractpainting #abstractexpressionism #conceptualpaintings #losangelesartist #painting #oilpainting
