🖤✨🖤✨ (I put my hand up like this way too much but I just can’t help it sometimes) My whole life I’ve felt pressured to be masculine. From a young age I saw how differently men and women were treated, and I was honestly so terrified of being treated that way, or being perceived as weaker. But I’ve been learning to embrace the power in my feminine side, as well as experimenting with different looks and makeup!! Here’s a simple brown/black smoky eye I attempted last night just for the fun of it!! (I’ve only done makeup a few times before this so don’t rip me to shreds lol) I hope you can take away from this, that it’s never too late to start something new or change the way you want to perceive yourself and who you are. Be who and what you want to be! And obviously so long as you’re not hurting anyone else you’re Gucci! 📍NY & FL MA: @sceagency #asianmodels #asiancurvemodel #midsizeasian #midsizeasianmodel #curvyasian #taiqiujing #midsizemodeling #midsizemodels #midsizestyle #midsizeinfluencer #midsizefashion #midsizegals #asianadoptee #chineseadoptee #adopteevoices #adopteestories #ugcinfluencers #commercialmodel #nycmodel #newyorkmodels #orlandomodels #orlandophotographer #newyorkphotographer

#APIBookstagramTour 2024 I debated whether to participate in the tour again this year with everything going on - the atrocities taking place in Gaza and on university campuses, as well as a lot in my personal life with traveling and moving. But ultimately, I wanted to participate in order to support the API bookstagram community and amplify their words. I’m proud to be part of this community, and I’m proud to be an Asian adoptee. I’m inspired by their posts on so many important topics - activism, solidarity, identity, representation, diversity, heritage, culture, and the meaning of this month, to name a few. Check them out using the tour hashtag and show some support! Even though we are living in dark times, with so much violence and hate in the world, I think it’s worthwhile to celebrate Asian joy and uplift the Asian community. So for this post, I chose a photo of me feeling joyful. Please support Asian bookstagrammers, authors, and businesses every day. Thank you for @booknerdkat for organizing the tour again. Be sure to check out @aneedleinmybookstack who is also posting today, as well as @sitreadsip, @booksnraedunn, and @bookwormingnotes tomorrow.

Thoughts are NOT facts! It’s important to remember this on days when we’re feeling down on ourselves. It is normal to have moments of low confidence and negative self talk. What matters is how we deal with it. Remind yourself that just because you have a specific negative thought, does not mean that it is true. This can help you remember that these thoughts and feelings can pass. #asianadoptee #adopteepride #adoptee #asianpride #adopteesunite #adoption #transracialadoptee #transracialadoption #adopteewellness #adoptionwellness #wellness #mentalhealth #asianmentalhealth #adopteementalhealth #selfcare #adopteevoices #adoptionstory #adoptionmovement #AAPI #stopasianhate

Say her name, Asunta Fong Yang. She was 12 years old when she was found dead in 2013. This new @netflix miniseries has brought renewed attention to her life and the circumstances surrounding her death. Looking through my feed, you’ll see that I’m doing my part to raise awareness about these crimes. They are happening all over the world to infants and children like Asunta. Sadly, the law only serves justice after their deaths. For months, I have been asking how many will it take before we say enough is enough. Before we take preventative action, to criminalize the adoption industry. In all fairness, I understand there’s many battles being fought against the adoption industry right now. I understand we must pick our battles. I hope more people will choose to fight the battles these children cannot fight themselves. With all the attention on the Netflix series, very few are asking about the adoption itself. Too often the focus is on the adoptive parents. What of Asunta’s family? How would you feel knowing your child was at the center of such a tragic crime? As a fellow Asian Adoptee, and child abuse survivor, I am deeply saddened for Asunta, her family and all children who may be at risk of becoming victims of this adoption industry.

Share your thoughts! 💭 Personally I think the concept of family is subjective. It can be defined however you see fit. I think that the quality of the connection and relationship matter most. I believe that blood relations and legalities hold little weight-especially as an adoptee. I have always hated the phrase “you can’t choose your family”. As adoptees, our supposed families have literally gone and chosen to add us to their family. So this is ironic when it comes from family members. #adoptee #adopteesunite #adoption #transracialadoptee #adoptionwellness #selfcare #wellness #adoptee #adopteevoices #adoptionstory #adopted #adopteemovement #adopteepride #asianadoptee #asianempowerment #asianpride

Share your thoughts! 💭 💭 💭 I used to have crippled-non existent confidence. For the longest time during childhood and teen years, I genuinely believed that I was the literal ugliest being to ever exist. Thankfully I’m now able to see how unhealthy and unrealistic that way of thinking is. But from the lack of facial mirrors and a safe welcoming environment, that was the view I had. As a result, I constantly felt inferior to my peers. I also felt as though my physical traits were all people would see me as. It felt like I’d miss out on opportunities, be excluded from social things or just be treated different due how my physical traits. I used to think to myself “I look this way so that’s why ____ happened” or “I’m not enough because of my physical traits” Now I have a healthier view of beauty, self esteem and self concept. Like everyone else, I still have those moments or days where my self esteem is lower however, it’s not taking up the same mental space as it used to. Confidence fluctuates but my self concept remains steady. Everyone is beautiful whether they can see it or not. #adoptee #adopteesunite #adoption #transracialadoptee #adoptionwellness #selfcare #wellness #adoptee #adopteevoices #adoptionstory #adopted #adopteemovement #adopteepride #asianadoptee #asianempowerment #asianpride

Many people love to single out cases where the adoption seemingly turned out well. Please pay attention that you need to hear this straight from the mouth of an adult adoptee themselves. Most importantly, however, is that you know that adoption is an industry and not a tiny business in selling babies, while these of course also exist. The reality is that adoption is a 24 billion dollar industry (in the US). In today's post I want to highlight how people in power (goverment, adoption agencies, ngo's, adopters etc) get to decide what is good and bad: That there is something good about buying and uprooting babies. It's like some people in the West decide which foreigner is welcome and which isn't. And they decided that adoptees are wanted, welcome. That is until, if you're an adoptee, you have your first experience with discrimination or r4c1sm. Then you learn that you're a *insert slur / assumption*.  I think that many adopted people start to wonder at one point what being 'wanted' means. What 'love' means within the adoptive family. Is it good to be wanted? Who does it benefit to be wanted? Many reactions I get from people in the West is that adoptees benefit greatly from living in a wealthy, developed and morally high country. It's exactly this belief which reflects the c0l0nizers' mindset that people of colour are savages who should be tamed and shaped into what they deem right. Positive discrimination is still discrimination that stems from a (white) svprem4cist belief. The model minority myth doesn't benefit Asian people. And being exoticized or fetishized as an Asian woman is, in fact, a dangerous thing. At last, the text under translation, of course, refers to the Dutch treatment of refugees/ asylum seekers (of colour). And maybe some of you have picked up on this already, but Jason Bhugwandass did a research into the experiences of Dutch youth in the Zikos department of the child welfare institution iHUB. The white text is something that Franc Weerwind said. But, if a child is better off in the Netherlands due to available special health care for example, there's still no need for the adoption industry nor the practice of adoption to exist.

Adoption is always in the interest of anyone who makes money off of our bodies. For example, the people working at adoption agencies, mediators etc. But it's also important to let you look at adoption as a market or industry and that these exist within larger systems of oppression. Most evident is capitalism. Do you think it is only natural that people in the west can afford to buy a baby from the global South, and therefore is allowed - even stimulated - to do so? Do you believe it is fair to the parent(s) of the children in the global South? That it is right towards the child themselves? To make sense of this all, it is, therefore, really important to understand oppressive systems in general, and even the political and societal situation of the countries involved.  There are many ways to talk about the adoption industry. You will find many Instagram accounts that stress the inherent trauma of being separated from your family and the consecutive risks of trauma of being raised in a society that denies your lived experience. When I think of the adoption industry right now, I mainly see the hypocrisy of adopters who hide behind the white saviour narrative. Are they raising their voices, do they use their whiteness, to speak about the children in P4l3stine? Is their empathy and compassion (or even interest) towards children genuine?  Or maybe only when it comes to fulfilling their own wishes? I believe we live in a time when masks are falling off, and we finally see the true faces of people who call themselves civilised and think of themselves as righteous and superior.  The adoption industry is a disgusting existence that makes a lot of money with our bodies. If I remember correctly: adoption in the United States is a 14 billion dollar industry! Everyone involved is complicit and perpetuates trauma, which, mind you, can be prevented. The answer is abolition. I don't expect people to advocate for adoptees, but that's also not necessary. In my opinion, as long as society understands the oppressive systems we all live under, and tries to dismantle and decolonize from one of those, that would be a good start. Because it is all intertwined.

4/2/2024, 4:39:43 PM

As adoptees, you’re not alone if you tend to be highly self critical and focus on the negative. This is extremely harmful to our self esteem, self image and overall wellbeing. Something I’ve learned to do(thanks to my great therapist), is to track my wins. Whether big or small, an accomplishment is an accomplishment. On the really hard days, a seemingly small activity like getting out of bed, or taking a shower may actually be the biggest accomplishment of the day. Healthy habits like eating regularly, drinking water regularly are basic care necessities which should be acknowledged and rewarded. Mind you, I’m not saying that you should have a party every time you do something beneficial for yourself. Rather, it’s important to recognize what you have accomplished and feel proud of your progress. #adoptee #adopteesunite #adoption #transracialadoptee #adoptionwellness #selfcare #wellness #adoptee #adopteevoices #adoptionstory #adopted #adopteemovement #adopteepride #asianadoptee #asianempowerment #asianpride

"Language, usage, and culture are always changing. Personally, I have evolved from identifying as Chinese-American in my childhood (because it was too hard to explain that Taiwan and Thailand were not the same to a bunch of white Midwesterners in the 90s) to now identifying as Taiwanese American," writes Jennifer Duann (@chiefexecutiveauntie). As of 2021, The New York Times, Associated Press, Chicago Manual of Style, and other style guides no longer hyphenate Asian American or any of its derivatives. Is this just an issue of semantics or an important statement about Asian American identity? Check out our latest resource guide for appropriate styling and the nuances of identity, language usage, and cultural representation.

I thought I’d start a series called Adoptee Thoughts where adoptees can share their opinions on different adoption related topics. I hope this can spark some meaningful discussion! What are your thoughts on adoptees adopting? ————————————————————————————— Personally, I don’t see myself adopting. I’ve always thought that while there are positives, I wouldn’t want my child to experience the hard times I went through for simply existing. I do think that adoptees would be the best type of people to adopt as we understand the challenges that come with adoption. #adoptee #adopteesunite #adoption #transracialadoptee #adoptionwellness #selfcare #wellness #adoptee #adopteevoices #adoptionstory #adopted #adopteemovement #adopteepride #asianadoptee #asianempowerment #asianpride
