It’s officially Asian Pacific Heritage Month. “One Child Policy: A Woman’s Price” What do women have to do with the price of tea in China? The population of China was booming during the 1970s due to its flourishing agriculture. However, the massive growth outpaced the food production, which led to one of the worst famines in history. Millions of people starved to death, which resulted in the One Child Policy. I stuffed used tea bags in a bird cage to show the loss of reproductive rights. The string was torn from the tea bag, just as fertility was ripped from victims of the One Child Policy. My hands are later shown in red paint to represent the blood-stained hands of the doctors who had performed countless abortions, infanticides, and hysterectomies, shown as a pile of strings. The neat stack of tea bags soon became a messy pile of waste. Even worse, many women would have their first child and be completely unaware they were to be sterilized. She connected more with her father—the dominant force in her family triad—often in an attempt to fit in with the 99% white suburb in which she grew up, and this made her feel distant from her already isolated mother. This month honors Americans with heritage from Asia and Pacific Islands so it covers countries such as China, Taiwan, Korea, India, Japan, Iran and Pacific Island such as Indonesia, Guam and Hawaii. More than 100 languages and nearly 50 ethnic groups are represented from East and Southeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent and the Pacific Islands. Just finished this book today. This is the first book I read this year that greatly upset me at some points. And yet I found myself craving that? Maybe I like emotional masochism, or maybe I like seeking relatable kinds of vulnerability. That determination is up to my future self to decide. In this memoir, Zauner explores her tense relationship with her mother growing up and the further complications of all her familial relationships as her mother withers away from cancer. She touches upon how her mother functions as the linchpin of her racial identity as a half-white, half-Korean girl and how both their generational gap and identity gap make it difficult to understand each other. Zauner unflinchingly describes the feeble physical state her mother ends up in and how her deterioration affects the psyche of Zauner and those around her. She reveals moments of hostility and ugly words exchanged in her youth by her and her mother, as well as the guilt she felt for troubling her mother. Zauner vividly captures the strained mother-daughter relationship, depicting all the constant critiques, scrutiny, and fussing in almost too intense detail.
