I’m not sure why but posting has been so hard for me the past couple of months. I’ve never been good at sharing my work even when I was young. All my art went into the closet or attic. I hated when my mom hung my work on the wall. Over time I got used to seeing it but I’ve never been good about showing it. Life is funny. POETRY AS COMMUNITY ART: A THREAD. I GOT WORKSHOPS FOR EVERYBODY, AGES 9 to 99!! Of course, the monthly Lighthouse Writer’s Workshop is back TOMORROW at @motorhousebaltimore, 7-9PM! Starting THIS Friday, May 3rd, I’m facilitating a youth poetry and songwriting workshop series with @prattlibrary! If you know some youth that would enjoy this, please bring them! I’ll be at the Hamilton Branch Friday, May 3rd, 10th, and 24th doing a 3-part Songwriting workshop! This is the space for budding songwriters/MCs/poets to learn what it takes to put a song together, from start to finish. The goal is for the youth to walk away with at least one completed song. We’ll even create cover art for their singles! I’ll be holding a one-off version of this workshop at the Brooklyn Branch on June 25th! I’ll also be doing a one-off poetry workshop at the Roland Park Branch, a library I held dear as a student at Roland Park Middle…the #fullcircle continues!! And of course, next Tuesday, the #NotInService Poetry In Motion book tour makes its third stop at @redemmas! RSVP at the link in my bio to register!! ALL OF THESE WORKSHOPS AND READINGS ARE FREE!!!!! It was a goal of mine to bring the skills I learned in those very, very expensive classrooms back to the community that supported me as a young writer, in order to inspire other young people and adults on their artistic paths. I remember what it was like not having money for the open mics, but knowing I had something I NEEDED to get off my chest! Creativity is divinely given and SHOULD be free! (That last photo is 4th grade me. I hated that photo for all of my adolescence bc I couldn’t understand what my hair was doing. I also chipped my tooth in a big, unnecessary fall that year. My mother even put mascara on my eyebrows. To this day I’m still not sure why. I later realized just how beautiful I’ve always been, and have learned to embrace my lifelong weirdness. Childhood is awkward 🥶🫠 but finding my voice gave me purpose. Don’t forget to go see my show “Unraveling Threads”, in the Members Gallery @bromotower @promoandarts !! Up till May 27. Then most of the work gets shipped to Augusta, Georgia to be in the show “Subversive Threads”, a show featuring four fiber artists at the Westobou Gallery. This show then travels back to Maryland to be at @academyartmuseum from October to February!!! And to add to all of this amazement , I’m going to be interviewed by Baltimore’s Jane Miller on May 25 at my show in the Bromo Arts tower!!!
