𝗠𝗢𝗡𝗢𝗣𝗢𝗟 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 „Macho Sentimental“ ist das zentrale Konzept der mexikanischen Designerin, Autorin und Künstlerin Bárbara Sánchez-Kane, die von Kurator Adriano Pedrosa gerade zur Hauptausstellung der Biennale in Venedig eingeladen wurde. Dieser sentimentale Typ ist ein Mann, der zu seinen Gefühlen, eine Frau, die zu ihrer Sexualität stehen darf: „ein Mensch jedweden Geschlechts, der oder die nicht länger seine oder ihre Impulse unterdrückt“, so die 32-Jährige. Nun ist Gender-Bending gerade sehr in Mode. Doch Sánchez-Kane setzt weder auf die Schlabber-Egalität der Streetwear noch auf minimalistische Androgynität. Sondern auf eine Neudefinition klassischer Schönheit, die sehr zeitgemäß Exzentrik, Poesie und Aktivismus vereint und bei aller anarchischen Lust eine klare Handschrift trägt: Mexikanische Traditionen – Stickereien, Trachten, Katholizismus – und Stereotype – Machismo, Leidenschaft, Gewalt – bekommen bei Sánchez-Kane eine neue, queere Heimat. #Throwback2023 "New Lexicons for Embodiment" was the first-ever solo exhibition by Bárbara Sánchez-Kane in New York. The artist is interested in the deconstruction of identities and the duality of the presented self: through his clothes and sculptures, there is a perpetual tearing and fracturing of the structure, voids that seemingly shouldn’t exist, and the recurring repurposing of traditional objects through the destruction of their functionality. As an introduction to Sánchez-Kane’s practice, the foyer of the gallery housed a pop-up shop of his fashion brand with items from his latest collection. I recently installed these "killer "shoes by Barbara Sanchez Kane at a collector's home in Manhattan Beach and love how their edginess contrasts with the peaceful nature of the painting by KyungChul Shin. Barbara Sanchez Kane is interested in the deconstruction of identities and the duality of the presented self: through her clothes and sculptures, there is a perpetual tearing and fracturing of the structure, voids that seemingly shouldn’t exist, and the recurring repurposing of traditional objects through the destruction of their functionality. Through October 21, kurimanzutto in New York is presenting the solo exhibition “New Lexicons for Embodiment” by Bárbara Sánchez-Kane, featuring a pop-up of the artist’s latest fashion collection and sculptural works that can be worn, deformed, or multiplied. Sánchez-Kane, who uses she and he pronouns, has challenged the rules of the industry from the beginning, ignoring the rigidity of set seasons, conformity of genders, even functionality of garments. Last week, Bárbara Sánchez-Kane's first solo show in New York City "New Lexicons for Embodiment" opened at @kurimanzutto. Navigating the individual, yet intertwined worlds of fashion and art, @sanchezkane considers the clothed body as the interphase with which we experience the world and interact with reality, and examines how these clothes contribute to the performance of identity and self-expression. After the gallery opening, we celebrated at the iconic @russiansamovar restaurant in the Theater District, where friends and VIP guests enjoyed traditional russian fare, paired with Tequila Casa Dragones Joven, followed by a party upstairs featuring Casa Dragones Blanco, Casa Dragones Añejo, and beats by @monsecastera. The afternoon of the last day in NYC started with Groovy playing on a @linabobardi.arq chair (plz don't scratch 😱) thanks to generous chill time with @m__aguilera showing us around the new exhibit by @animal_que_no_existeix, bumped into @david_eugin_moon finally catching up (as we couldn't at the opening the day before), a lucky discovery of #barbarasanchezkane who obfuscates fashion indexes with that of high art, religlious semiotics, etc., (sorry to miss you @malikalmahrouky), corbu popsicles by @williampopel1 and finally me being a total fan-girl over @martharosler with her lifetime oeuvre 🤟

Bárbara Sánchez-Kane's first solo show in New York City "New Lexicons for Embodiment" opened last night at kurimanzutto. Luis Felipe Fabre states in his text for the show: "Mutant clothes as an act of resistance against evolutionary biology: a wardrobe for misfits in which all that is functionless and discarded finds its place. Clothes for a less efficient life. Shoes to walk slowly and difficultly toward a different beauty. Clothes for being less productive. Suits unfit for seeking work. A perfect wardrobe for making life more complicated. But clothes, too, for tying the body to the body and saving it from virtual reality and its avatars. Clothes as uncomfortable as reality itself." Art creates a space for Sánchez-Kane to disarticulate the elements in the fashion industry with which he does not identify. On the other hand, fashion is the discipline in which she was trained, and the symbolic space where he organizes her ideas and understands the material world. Through these two lines of thought, Sánchez-Kane translates his observations into sculptural works that exit the fashion arena and reveal their impossibility to function inside it. Bárbara Sánchez-Kane's “Macho Sentimental vol. II” was performed on the opening day of the 2019 group exhibition "Prince·sse·s des villes" at Palais de Tokyo, Paris. In the performance, the artist wore an iron mold of her body with juicers in place of her breasts, pubis, and rear, which she allowed the other two performers, and eventually the spectators, to squeeze oranges from. The artist opened her body to affection from Morena Valdés, who sang in the performance, as well as to the unwanted advances of Pepe Romero, who wore cheese grater heels. Discussing the performance, Sánchez-Kane remarks, “I started doing performance as a way to express, the same as I do with my clothes in shows, a certain form of 3-D inspiration, the feeling, the touch and feel of everything that surrounds my work, to talk about what is happening in Mexico, of injustices, violence against women. It is a social denunciation of what affects us women.” Accompanying the performance was an installation that included the iron mold and cheese grater heels, kinetic sculptures made from everyday objects, and a series of photographs of female pubic hair adorned with intricate designs and accessories. "From the Archive" is a series that mines kurimanzutto’s archive to share narratives from artists and the gallery.
