Congratulations to NEC Prep Alum and student of Rodney Lister, @larapoemusic on her @bbc commission for this summer! Her piece Laulut maaseudulta (Songs from the Countryside) will premiere on August 25th, 2024 at @royalalberthall at the @bbc_proms Lara Poe is a Finnish-American composer who is currently based in London. She has worked with ensembles such as the London Symphony Orchestra and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, and her works have been performed across a wide range of venues throughout the US, Europe, and Asia. Her piece Kaamos, which she wrote for the Lahti Symphony Orchestra, was nominated for a 2021 Ivors Composer Award in the Large Scale Composition category. Kaamos also was selected by YLE Radio Finland to represent Finland at the International Rostrum of Composers 2021 in Belgrade, Serbia. Recent projects include a large-scale song cycle for the mezzo-soprano Virpi Räisänen, which is a co-commission between the Oulu Symphony and Lahti Symphony orchestras. Poe has received recognition in several competitions, most recently receiving a BMI Student Composer Award in 2021, and the Theodore Holland Intercollegiate Composition Prize in 2020. In 2017 she was the first female winner of the William Schuman Prize in the BMI Student Composer Awards. Poe is currently a doctoral student at King’s College London, studying with George Benjamin. All you can do is follow your art. I just never thought my art would bring me to performing on stage at the Royal Albert Hall with a choir, strings, piano and a genuinely renowned, insanely talented composer. When @ericwhitacre messaged me a couple of months ago and asked for my help bringing his vision to life: Of integrating his first love (electronic music) with his long standing relationship (incredible, deep orchestral music arranged for choir and strings), I had to pinch myself. Little did I know that Eric was a wonderfully giving, visionary, humble, passionate, dedicated, big-hearted individual that would allow a modest ambient musician the opportunity to collaborate with him. But I’m reminded that art is more than vision, more than virtuosity. Art is friendship. Art is collaboration. Art is people. On September 4th, 2024, expect 24 skilled musicians on stage performing Eric’s wonderful music, but also me, fiddling with a Cocoquantus in the corner performing Eric’s latest piece “Eternity in an Hour”, wondering how I got here, water flowing underground. 🇬🇧 I often speak in these grand ways about the things awaiting me professionally, but you need to understand something about how my career path went in order to appreciate just how truly grateful I am for the moment I am in now. I came to London at the age of 18 full of dreams and ambitions. These crashed. Hard. This is a normal process for a lot of us. There were times I tried to give up on this singing thing, and there were times when I have made peace with the fact that these wild dreams of mine will never come true. It feels extra special to make my professional UK debut at the proms. I left London feeling like I have completely failed my mission there, and how satisfying is it to come back as a more confident, more accomplished version of myself singing some of my favourite music. I’m sat on a picnic rug, an oversized coat around my shoulders. There’s a sharpness to the air; the short English summer is drawing to a close and the evening is chilly. In my hand is a Union Flag. Sheltered within the bandstand, the orchestra prepares for the grand finale. As we reach the chorus, everyone around me raises their arms, creating a sea of blue, red and white. 🇬🇧 It is 1994 at a Proms in the Park event, one of many local concerts emulating the iconic Royal Albert Hall Last Night of the Proms. There, internationally renowned musicians close the performance with a rendition of ‘Rule, Britannia’. Here, less accomplished - but equally enthusiastic - voices sing the same song: ‘Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves!
