Such a wonderful article at @ABCHealth recently praising the benefits of community choirs and singing – an activity to improve brain plasticity and cognitive health, but also our mental health. “… musical gatherings seem to support social and emotional wellbeing for all sorts of groups…” “Clinical psychologist Professor Sarah Wilson explains it as “an internal therapy tool” that engages several parts of the brain at once. That “singing network”, as Professor Wilson calls it, includes areas that control complex motor activity, auditory processing, language, emotion and memory. Vocal motor control networks activate and coordinate the right muscles to project our voice and manage our airflow. Auditory and language networks help us to pitch our notes correctly, adjust our volume and sing the right lyrics. Professor Wilson explains that in choir singing, higher level executive functions are also involved, “making sure we come in at the right time, on the right note, and that hold note in our mind … timing it and coordinating relative to the music and the other singers”. My heart is so full of love and gratitude 🥰after a beautiful, waaaay overdue family reunion that I just got back from 2 weeks ago, then just coming back from another weekend away with #mychosenfamily - @pinksingers - I just feel so at peace with myself now more than ever. And I feel stronger each day. I knew from a very young age that I was trans, but unfortunately societal and religious pressures at that time meant my family couldn’t support my truth, it wasn’t easy but they have definitely more than come to terms with it now, and I feel so lucky to be loved by my biological family and accepted unconditionally for who I truly am. I know that sadly this isn’t the same for a lot of other LGBT+ people out there, and they are shunned away by their own flesh and blood. Another piece in our upcoming program highlights music by indigenous composer Andrew Balfour (@andrewbalfour_). Balfour is a prominent Winnipeg composer of Cree descent and has written a body of choral, instrumental, and orchestral works. 🎶 His featured piece, "Vision Chant," is based on an Indigenous chant style. This work is striking for both its stillness and its intensity. The journey - or, to use the Ojibway word, the “babamadizwin” - that is evoked begins and ends with a soprano melody, at first divided and then, symbolically perhaps, unified. Stegall sang this role with us in 2018 and has won acclaim as one of the finest American evangelists of his generation.
