Jitsu Squad Completed 20th April Game 14 of 2024 I wasn’t planning on playing Jitsu Squad straight away, but it timed right with my completion of Spyro and my drought of Beat-em-ups this year, so actually filled the gap quite nicely! 👍🏻 Visually, it’s great. Lovely bright and crisp cartoon graphic are well animated and presented in a nice variety of absolutely ridiculous, but equally bright and interesting cartoon environments! 😎🔥 This is all accompanied by an uptempo scream of thrashing guitars that works perfectly with the chaos ensuing on screen! My personal favourite combination of all this carnage is a level featuring surfing on lava! 😆 Brilliant! The combat is easy to get to grips with, with only 2 main attack buttons, a grab/throw and a counter. The moves aren’t particularly tricky to execute, but the effectiveness of each attack is amplified by the timing of delivery, chaining together massive combos. The screen gets very full with a lot of wacky and hilarious enemies (I particularly liked the Kung fu kicking T-Rex) which all looks a bit daunting, but to be honest the attacks are dealing damage to multiple enemies at once anyway, so they’re not too hard to dispatch! 😀 In handheld, it’s suffering from slight frame rate issues when the screen gets very busy.. but it certainly didn’t ruin my experience! I felt the performance was slightly better docked though. Not a long game, but loads of fun and laughs with 4 playable characters at your disposal, each with a different play style. For the low price I payed, I’m very happy with this one! So I'm serving up my favourite instalment of the MK franchise: Mortal Kombat II. The Amiga version looks the part, but unsurprisingly, it suffers gameplay-wise from the reduced button input options. Trek To Yomi Original Video Game Soundtrack Music composed by Cody Matthew Johnson & Yoko Honda Released in 2022 by Laced Records (@laced_audio) Trek to Yomi was just what I needed after playing through a game like Ghost of Tsushima and it’s DLC that followed a little bit later. It’s a visually stunning 2D side-scrolling action game all played out in a jidaigeki style black in white setting. Im not sure the game was well received because no one ever talks about it but I LOVED it! Trek to Yomi features a haunting and atmospheric soundtrack that complements its visuals and gameplay experience. Expect lots of gentle shamisen, shakuhachi flute and taiko drums all interwoven with ambient cinematic orchestration. Happy Sunday!👋 As I’ve mentioned on here a million times before (well, almost) one of my all-time favourite games is Street Fighter II, with Special Champion Edition on the Megadrive edging it as my favourite home version. That said, I still love the Super Nintendo versions and I have a soft spot for the vanilla version on the SNES because it was the first home version that I played, and I was very jealous of my SNES owning friends at the time 😂 I picked up these three copies from a seller in Japan MANY years ago, and I’m sad to remember paying just £10.50 for all free, plus postage, which was £50. I jest 😂 I need to get the Fairy Liquid out by the look of these cartridges! 🧽 I don’t know if it’s a case of “other people’s chips” but I always think the Japanese box art and packaging usually looks better than the Western versions. Robo Army - Korean PC Version from 1999! It’s #fightinggamefriday and here’s a bit of a curiosity… a Windows PC version of the NeoGeo Beat-em-up Robo Army! It was developed by published by South Korean developer ’Mega Enterprise Co Ltd’ who are best known for their work on Metal Slug 4 on the NeoGeo itself. The game itself plays just like the NeoGeo version with our two cyborg heroes Maxima & Rocky taking on the evil professor’s robotic forces. There’s a range of power ups and weapons, from severed robotic arms to oil drums, screen clearing energy waves and the ability to temporarily transform yourself into an invincible Robo-vehicle! Plus there’s plenty of variety in enemies, bosses and stages. In fact some of the robotic animals and the vertical scrolling stages remind me of SNK’s Beast Busters. The other distinguishing feature of these Korean versions is the quite nicely designed packaging, which as shown here takes the form of a cardboard sleeve with a re-edited or re-drawn version of the original NeoGeo art. There’s also a CD case inside that’s very reminiscent of the NeoGeo CD cases. It’s difficult to explain it exactly but there’s a very distinct style to all of these which I find strangely likeable 😅 Mega Enterprise published a number of NeoGeo games for Windows, but I’ve read some conflicting reports about them, with some people referring to them as bootlegs. But considering that Mega Enterprise an actual developer of Metal Slug 4 for the NeoGeo, combined with the fact that they’ve used SNK’s branding throughout the game packaging, personally I think they are actually licensed products, at least in Korea! TGW Rating: 8/10

Now that I’m done with my countdowns it’s time for me to begin posting the usual stuff I’m known for on here. First off is the ending screen to the first game I’ve beaten this year and that’s Hook. I made it an easy goal to beat at least one beat-em-up per month and I chose this one to start it off. Based on the 90s Steven Spielberg movie, it’s a basic beat-em-up in which you play as Peter Pan and the Lost Boys and go through waves of Captain Hook’s pirates before getting to him; it’s what you expect from the genre and it took too many quarters to beat. This beat-em-up is part of the same series as Rival Turf and Brawl Brothers, although the games were released as unrelated games outside of Japan.
