Ventifact: shaped by the erosive action of windblown sand. That’s why these are prairie glass and not sea glass. It also makes them soo much cooler in my opinion. The sand isn’t as abrasive, leaving more of the original shape of the glass intact.
National Adoption Awareness Month When my hubby and I were starting the process of adoption we were quite naive to the adoption world and how complex the emotional toll would be on us, our family, our birth parents, and eventually our adoptive kiddos. Going through our first adoption, our eyes were opened to the broken and yet beautiful process and our lives forever tethered to people we didn't get to meet. Starting our second adoption we were able to get to know our birth parents a little bit more, and still desired to meet them in person and have the boys meet them as well. Thankfully we were able to have dinner with them and the boys were able to meet and take pictures. But nothing prepares you for the heartbreak of sitting across the table as your birth mother longingly holds her child that at the end of the night you will be taking home and not her. My heart broke inside as I watched her love on and snuggle her child. So much love and heartbreak in one picture. And then today, I opened my phone after sharing some pictures and an update with our birth mother and she replied, "Awwww my babies. My goodness. Hold them tight for me." I think sometimes it’s tempting to pull back or pull inward when we’ve been hurt by others; there is a time to reflect, but we were made to relationship. I have learned, over time, after a wise woman once shared that not everyone will be my next best friend. Friendshipping is one of the most cherished and at times painful journeys to navigate. I’ve recognized, not without my share of tears and heartache, that we are all wired differently, and not everyone sees or values things through the same lens. And that is ok. We each get to find our community, and those who we hold close to our heart. One of the gifts I treasure most in this life is friendship. It is laced with richness…and anguish. It’s not a one or the other, but rather, you take the beautiful with the broken. Love fiercely and hold loosely. Know that life has seasons. Leave your friendships at the foot of the cross. Be willing to talk about the hard stuff. Take responsibility for your part. It can be risky, but take “temperature checks” on your friendships anyways. I had SO MUCH fun with this concept… Kinsugi potteries are truly so beautiful and I really wanted this to have an oil painting feel. I have finally finished smoke fired plaque. Bit of a style departure for me, this one. Using the patternation from the smoke fire and ink to create the design. I love mushrooms and fungi, I think they are magical. So added some transfers to this. It is cracked and broken, but I still like it so I think it will find a home in the bathroom. Where all the good mushrooms grow. Titled by the hubby 'Zephyr' as always by the song it reminds him of.

I love to find pieces with maker’s marks on the back of the head but have never found enough to identify one! It started with a single book: Streams of Gold. I simply wanted to share pieces of my story with those who might be able to relate. That one simple gesture of pressing “share” on a post about my book set a series of dominoes into motion. I began creating Modern Kintsugi pottery and jewelry to represent the beauty found when imperfection meets grace. Somewhere along the way, Streams of Gold became much more than just a book. It became a tangible collection of stories and artistic creations pointing to hope and grace. Streams of Gold is not just my story: It is a seed. A seed contains much more than its appearance would suggest. When a seed is planted, we thrust something small into the depths of the dirt. As I finished writing Streams of Gold, I truly thought I had come to the end of the project. I had no way of knowing it was only the beginning. That’s the thing about planting: it often looks more like a burial than a beginning. It is fascinating how something can grow when shoved into the darkness of the earth. And yet, the mystery and the miracle of a seed lies in the reality that something marvelous emerges from that which is so tiny. And so it has been with Streams of Gold. What I thought was simply a book has grown into much more. The book was a seed that has made way for conversations, connections, and re-connections with friends and strangers alike. It has been a holy privilege to have many of you share the pieces of your stories with me. There was no way of knowing Streams of Gold was only the beginning of something much bigger and far-reaching. Streams of Gold is, and always will be, my real and raw memoir. But what has grown from it is more, and as such, warrants a name all its own. Thus, I am excited to announce the creation of “Beautifully Broken”. Just as a seed breaks open as new growth bursts forth, Streams of Gold has cracked open to give way to a new season. “Beautifully Broken” is the official line of my Modern Kintsugi creations (ceramics, home decor, and accessories) as well as workshops I will be offering to make your own Kintsugi pieces using modern methods. I often share how beautiful this life can be, but sometimes it leaves me so incredibly broken at the end of the day that you may find me hiding from everyone, in the closet with a tub of ice cream or alone on the back porch just trying to catch my breath from all the heavy so I can wake up & choose to do it all again tomorrow.
