I går nåede jeg bl.a. op i Belforttårnet, der så vidt jeg forstod blev brugt til opbevaring af vigtige dokumenter tilbage i tiden. Den sorte kiste på et af billederne blev f.eks. brugt til opbevaring af byens skrevne købstadsprivilegier og der var tre forskellige nøglehuller samt tre nøglebærere for en sikkerheds skyld. Belfort van Gent Yesterday, I was lucky enough to see the sunset at the top of one of the three towers in Ghent. I decided at the last minute, because in Belgium, nice weather disappears in a few minutes. I had this viewpoint in my sights for a long time, but the conditions were not ideal for a long time. Ghent, a city in the Flemish Region of Belgium, boasts a rich tapestry of history. Once a Roman territory, it was with the Frankish invasions that Celtic and Latin were replaced by Old Dutch. In 851 and 879, under the Frankish rule, the city was plundered by Vikings. However, the city recovered and thrived, and in the Middle Ages it was one of Europe's largest and wealthiest cities, a medieval powerhouse known for its cloth trade, which flourished in the 14th century. Today, Ghent's stunning Cloth Hall is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city's famous altarpiece, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by the Van Eyck brothers, is a truly masterpiece. It was begun around the mid-1420s and completed by 1432 and can be found today in the Saint Bavo Cathedral. Containing twelve interior panels, every morning and evening, the side panels are slowly opened and closed, hiding the interior panels during the night. Belfry of Ghent, or Het Belfort van Gent is the tallest belfry in Belgium, and it belongs to Unesco World Heritage Sites. But what you see in this first picture is actually the view from it, Saint Nicholas' Church, a Roman Catholic Church from the tower😅 The tower has an elevator inside, so you don't need to climb too many stairs, but you'll still need to climb up to the 1st floor. You can see the bell mechanism, famous dragon statue and 4 guardians inside the tower.
