Fantastic Fest Review: "Iké Boys.” Tell me if you’ve heard this one before: a group of outcasts finds themselves at the center of a prophecy that holds the fate of the world in its hands. In brief, that’s the summary for Eric McEver’s (“A Utopia”) new release and feature-length directorial debut “Iké Boys,” premiering at Fantastic Fest 2021; though it’s a summary which is robbing all the color, all the personality, all the pizzazz out of this gaijin coming-of-age superhero tale. Basically, if you grew up in America in the ‘80s or ‘90s, “Iké Boys” will entirely be your jam as it uses the visual stylings of both animated and live-action-adventure stories (specifically Japanese Tokusatsu) like those seen in “Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers,” “Ultraman,” “VR Troopers,” or “Kamen Rider.” Even if you didn’t watch these shows at the time, their respective impacts have spread into popular culture so that even if you can’t name from what series a specific mech is from, you can at least acknowledge what it represents. Using the familiar, McEver and co-writer Jeff Hammer (“Live or Die in La Honda”) create a story that’s going to delight otaku all over the world. That is, if the world doesn’t end first. Better Watch Out (2016) Genre : Thriller Rating : 7/10 Before moving away, a babysitter comes to look after a 12-year-old boy during the holidays but their night is disrupted by unexpected circumstances. I was expecting that this would be your run-of-the-mill, home-invasion type movie where a pretty babysitter, in charge of a little boy, has to fight for their lives against unknown assailants. It started off that way, with this really cheesy chain of events and coincidences. However, once the ball drops and you actually find out what's really happening, the movie gets pretty interesting, specifically, how everything unfolds. I wasn't expecting it at all and I loved the ending, especially because it ends on such an ambiguous note. BETTER WATCH OUT (2016), directed by Chris Peckover (UNDOCUMENTED) from a script he co-wrote with Zack Kahn (MAD, SKETCHY) starring Olivia DeJonge (THE SOCIETY, THE VISIT), Levi Miller (A WRINKLE IN TIME, PAN), Ed Oxenbould (RECKONING, THE VISIT), Aleks Mikic (PREACHER, SECRET CITY), Dacre Montgomery (STRANGER THINGS, POWER RANGERS), Patrick Warburton (AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., THE VENTURE BROS.) and Virginia Madsen (SWAMP THING, CANDYMAN). The plot involves two pre-teen boys who play a prank on their babysitter that quickly goes off the rails and reveals an even more insidious agenda. This movie, at first glance, seems like an amalgam of BLACK CHRISTMAS, HALLOWEEN and SCREAM 4. It's slightly hampered by the outrageous characterization of literally everyone in it, but it takes 2 or 3 unexpected twists that are as jarring simply because they're seemingly the exact opposite of the mood the setup implies. The effectiveness of its critique on toxic masculinity lands it somewhere between 2019's BLACK CHRISTMAS remake and the recent PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, although it is not as solid as the latter. Tone-Deaf A woman decides to rent a home in the country to get away from it all. Turns out the guy renting it to her is looking for one last thrill before he dies.
