Kim Coates is such a fantastic actor that he adds so much charisma and electricity to even the most egregious direct to video junk, but not even two of him can save Ferocious from feeling like a slipshod, well intentioned yet sloppily made thriller. Amanda Crew stars as a Hollywood starlet who is being blackmailed by a sleazy nightclub owner (Coates) for some vague past transgression. After she accidentally kills him in a heated altercation, his much more dangerous twin brother (also Coates!) comes gunning for her and a siege type narrative unfolds in the club as he tries to kill her and anybody in her vicinity. The issue here isn’t with actors, Crew does a fine job as the lead and Coates chews scenery magnificently as both the lecherous club kingpin and the totally unhinged, very volatile and violent twin brother, he’s always a lot of fun when villain mode is engaged. But the script for this thing just lurches forward in fits and starts like a busted power tool, no natural flow to the beats or coherency in set pieces that are supposed to be suspenseful. If I hadn’t have looked up a detailed summary beforehand on IMDb I would have had real trouble deciphering what this was actually about, and that’s a problem. On Tubi, if you are so inclined.

There's Something Wrong with the Children (2023) Genre : Horror Rating : 4/10 A couple take a weekend trip with two longtime friends and their two young children. But something isnt right about the kids I guess it wasn't that bad but it wasn't even close to being good enough. This story has already been told in a million and in so many better ways. When the audience is cut off from civilization in a cabin, they see a strange horror that is almost funny. It's hard to pick one person to criticise because everyone was so bad. The situation is so crazy that it's sometimes funny (the kitchen scene when the kids go missing, is a lowpoint). This movie has really simple acting and a simple story, making it feel like a very simple piece of entertainment. Certainly, you could waste your time on a lot worse things than this. This movie has nothing good about it. Has a great start, but, once again, it looks like they spend all their money on the first half of the movie and then barely finish it. There is nothing about this that makes it worth recommending, and I will never watch it again. I wish I could get back the $7 and the time I put into this. All of the parts were just thrown together without any explanation. Very terrible film. I hadn’t rewatched this movie in its entirety probably since it first came out. I remembered it being a decent entry into the series, but had no clue how it would still hold up. Turns out, it’s still a solid entry. If you’re like me, you go into these movies not for an A+ story, but for the gnarly kills and the process in which they happen. The acting is decent in this, but it’s definitely a product of its time. It’s always nice to see the earlier works of actors before they became more well known. It was cool to see Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Amanda Crew, and the Motorola Razr all appear in this. Since we all know the formula for these movies, I thought I would give my ranking of the deaths in this movie. I won’t go into detail just in case you haven’t seen this entry. 8. Flagpole 7. The Cherry Picker (lift) 6. The Weightlifter 5. The Warehouse Nail Gun 4. The Subway 3. The Rollercoaster 2. The Drive Through 1. The Tanning Beds I forgot how well the misdirects can be in these movies. I honestly forgot about most of the deaths before this rewatch. The drive through and nail gun had some excellent executions. However, the one I never forgot about, but did forget how truly gruesome it is, is the tanning beds scene. You can pretty much tell what’s going to happen, but it doesn’t take away the shock of what actually happens to the victims. I’m really glad this one still holds up. I was afraid that I was going to rewatch it and realize it was just the hype from the time it came out. Final Destination 3 keeps the same formula as the first 2, but still works really well. I’ll give it a 7/10. SOME OTHER WOMAN (Joel David Moore, 2023, USA) Screening Details: Regal Oceanside 16, Auditorium 3, 1/10/24, 6:05 p.m., $14.00 (comped with Regal Unlimited) My Rating: ★½ (out of ★★★★) I was OK with this for the first act or so; you *have* to be OK with a setup like this one or you're not a particularly willing moviegoer. But as the scenario started to progressively grate on me thereafter — and especially as Tom Felton's performance increasingly read like an unintentional parody of a certain mystery-thriller archetype — I was all ready to dub the film "HItchcock without the curiosity factor." Which is to say, you can imitate the Master of Suspense all you want, but it doesn't get you anywhere unless you can provoke the audience to be genuinely curious about the ultimate reveal. Well, turns out this is just trying to milk the Hitchcockian element as a tease, not as a full-fledged homage. It's not headed towards a traditional reveal, but rather goes in the movie-as-metaphor direction, which I suppose I should have been more prepared for given the opening text. Movie-as-metaphor has never been my thing — which is more of a personal bias and less a fault of the film — but I can go along with it if it feels fully fleshed-out and well-crafted. SOME OTHER WOMAN cuts corners to get to its destination... plus, if you just wanted a lurid airport novel thriller conclusion, you're doubly bummed. Nice to see Amanda Crew again, though. TV's SILICON VALLEY is the last time I can remember her appearing in anything notable...
