One Missed Call (2008) Genre : Horror Rating : 4/10 As her fellow students begin to get strange voicemails, a college student watches as they die one by one. Revisited this movie with a mix of nostalgia and excitement, hoping it would still send shivers down my spine. Spoiler alert: It didn't. Back in the day, my younger self and even my brother found it spine-chilling, but this time around, the scares just weren’t there. Anticipating a thrilling storyline, the disappointment hit harder than a missed call. The movie lacked the eerie vibes and the storyline failed to dial up any interest, leaving me hanging for something more. As much as I wished for a frightening encore, it turned out to be a bad sequel to my childhood fear. Lesson learned: not all trips down memory lane end with a scream. So, skip this one guys! Hey, guys. So I just finished watching "Swamp Thing", and it was good. It is based on the DC Comics character of the same name created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson. It stars Ray Wise, Dick Durock, Adrienne Barbeau and Louis Jourdan. It tells the story about a scientist named Alec Holland, who is mutated and transformed into the monster known as Swamp Thing through laboratory sabotage orchestrated by the evil Anton Arcane. Later, he helps a government worker, Alice Cable, and battles the man responsible for it all, the ruthless Arcane. I like this movie. It was pretty enjoyable. The action scenes are good, the story is okay, the cast, particularly Dick Durock and Adrienne Barbeau are good, the title character of Swamp Thing is interesting, and the relationship between Swamp Thing and Alice Cable is invested and nice. But the final fight between Swamp Thing and Arcane as a hairy, boar like beast is kind of pointless. It was great, but still pointless. Anyway, it's a really decent comic book superhero movie as it's unabashedly campy, often to its detriment, it is not without its charms, among them Adrienne Barbeau as the damsel in distress. My good friend Erica loaned me her ex-Blockbuster DVD of DEAD END (2003). She named her horror merch shop “Deadend Toyz” in honor of the movie. This was my first time checking out Dead End and I had a pretty good time with it! Firstly, the movie is set on Christmas Eve, so it has that seasonality to it. Most of the cast plays it unhinged, but none more so than the incomparable Ray Wise (who gets to scream “Laura” in a role outside of Twin Peaks). The great Lin Shaye gets to have a lot of fun in her role as well. Mick Cain delivers some of Dead End’s funniest, most ridiculous lines. I assume his character is supposed to be a teenager because he barrels through just about every teenage boy movie trope with zeal. Alexandra Holden rounds out the principal cast. There are elements of Dead End that reminded quite a bit of Phantasm (1979), such as a hearse driving down a darkened road with a character trapped in the back and a mysterious woman luring people to their deaths. Although its ending is telegraphed from the get-go, Dead End has all the silly charm of early 2000s horror with some first-class character actors chewing up the scenery in a Christmas vacation from hell, or maybe purgatory. #DeadEnd #RayWise #LinShaye #AlexandraHolden #Christmashorror

There's so much there to learn. #peterweller was a beast in this role and while it did make him as a star, I was a little surprised he returned to the series for the sequel, directed by #theempirestrikesback's #irvinkershner and written by #comic great, #frankmiller. Of course, by the time #robocop3 rolled around, not even the efforts of #monstersquad director #freddekker could save this jetpack robo-flop. David Lynch Retrospective Number 6 - Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992) Post returning to his groundbreaking TV show Twin Peaks for the last few episodes (amidst crashing reviews and ratings after he originally left), Lynch got a taste once again for the small American town and it's tale of tragic highschool student Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee). So he created this prequel movie which chronicles firstly, the death of Teresa Banks in the town of Deer Meadow, and then the last 7 days of Laura's life. Whereas the TV show had large elements of humour with a soap opera style aesthetic; this is an out and out horror thriller. I won't give away any spoilers for those who haven't seen Twin Peaks but the build up involves Laura beginning to realise who her potential killer might be (and it is absolutely devastating). There's a lot more of the textbook Lynch weirdness introduced, which I'm told leads directly into the return of the TV show back in 2017. Many stars from the TV show return (including agent Cooper in a bizarre scene featuring David Bowie). It has its problems; namely that Lee is not good enough to carry the movie as the lead (thank God for the brilliant Ray Wise returning as her Dad Leyland). Back when she just played a dead body and cousin Maddy she was fine, but this role feels wooden. The recasting of Lara Flynn Boyle as Donna Hayward also irritates. Reportedly Boyle declined to return due to her annoyance at the writing towards the end of the TV show. But the imagery and the nostalgia of revisiting some of these characters does make it a cult classic. I first watched it as a young teenager and had nightmares about Killer BOB for days. Yes, David Lynch is on a mission. There's just one problem: the studio had other plans. That's right, they want answers. Lynch isn't exactly a filmmaker who likes giving them though. They force his hand, and by episode 7 of this 22-episode season, the central mystery of the entire series is solved. We discover who killed Laura Palmer. It's done brilliantly, making for some of the most effective and disturbing network television of all time. Unfortunately, there are 15 episodes left to fill. The series wanders somewhat aimlessly, struggling to find a new focus. When Lynch and Co. do find one, it's a journey into a deeper, darker rabbit hole. They explore abstract ideas and, by season's end, they've turned the ship around and delivered another compelling story. Sadly, viewers had abandoned the series in the tumultuous times, and so fans were left dangling on the precipice, with yet another shocking cliffhanger ending.
