The Rotary World Peace Conference 2016 on January 15 and 16, 2016 brought together experts and leaders with those interested in learning about solutions to major issues happening in our lives and our world today. This past week was more than motivating with 50+ Rotary global leaders and senior executive team. Katey Halliday (Australia), Jeremy Oppperman (South Africa), and I had the incredible opportunity to facilitate a DEI training for the @rotaryinternational Board of Directors and Trustees. A great learning experience, our future is bright because of our leaders' commitment to enhancing Rotary's inclusivity across the globe. One of the first steps in this work is self-awareness of how we each show up with our biases and explore ways to disrupt them. Along with this self-awareness is how we share our own inclusive story, examine systems of power, and recommit ourselves daily with a personal mission to do this work, encouraging others to do the same. As we welcome a new year, I encourage you never to stop learning. Listen attentively to the stories/truths of others with curiosity and compassion. In doing so, as people of action who wish to do better, we can leave our organizations and communities better than we found them! Remember, we are all on a journey, and everyone has a story to share. Today marks the 1-year anniversary of the tragic murder of George Floyd. As an African American man, the past 12 months have been some of the most trying moments in my life. I am saddened that we still must have these conversations but am inspired that more are willing to have them.
